I'm Jim Meadows of Consolidated Rigging, the Safety Supervisor. Today we're going to talk about your plan, provide, and train.
Plan-what does that mean? You have to plan for a fall? That is absolutely correct. What if one of your employee is working four, five, or six feet off the ground and you have to plan for them to fall. That means you have to plan for a rescue as well. Dialing 911 is not a rescue plan. What if your local fire department doesn't have high reach capabilities? You have to have a site specific plan. With that, you got to plan for the proper equipment.
Which takes us to step two, provide. You have to provide the right harness. I'm 6'5, several hundred lbs., our volunteer is 5'3, will my harness fit her? The answer is no. Buying a universal harness is not the right idea. You buy the right tool for the right job, you buy the right harness for the right person. You want to base it upon their height and their weight, and if you're buying harness for a female, don't give them a harness for a male.
And last, let's talk about training. You hired a new employee, you got your plan, you provide the equipment, now let's train them the right way. Just because a person puts on a harness-does it fit properly? If a person is not wearing a harness the right way and they fall, they can get severely injured. In your rescue plan, do you provide for self rescue, or you provide for rescue from an outside source? Is your rescue set up for conscious person, or an unconscious person?
