"Set in the aftermath of a world-wide nuclear war, Fallout will challenge you to survive in an unknown and dangerous world. You will take the role of a Vault-dweller, a person who has grown up in a secluded, underground survival Vault. Circumstances arise that force you to go Outside - to a strange world 80 years after the end of modern civilization. A world of mutants, radiation, gangs and violence.
Your immediate task is to find a replacement for the broken water purification controller chip. Without that chip, your fellow Vault dwellers are doomed to dehydration or will be forced to leave the safety of the Vault for the Outside."

Im old enough to have played the OG Wasteland. I thought Fallout was a respectful adaption of that. Bear in mind I was there through it all. I'm an old fuddy duddy :).

Troika made another masterpiece. Arcanum: Myteries and Magic Orbscura is also similar to Fallout 1 and 2. It is quite good as.well.

I've heard fantastic things about Arcanum and I do have a copy of it. Sadly, I've yet to play it.

If memory serves the children were removed from the European edition because you could kill them like any other NPC / monster in the game.

That is correct, but I find it odd that they were re-added for the Fallout 2 digital re-release (at least the US version) but not for the original Fallout.

There was one tiny interaction with children in Fallout 1. If I recall, they can steel something from you, and you can yell at them or pickpocket it back from them or something. But you could also just kill them. That's was way to much for the European regulators. Today, US developers won't allow that either.

That was in Fallout 2 actually. There are 2 kids in front of Flick's shop in The Den. I always killed him or them in my playthroughs because the pickpocketing got old fast.

Can you praise F2 without shitting on other games? Cloud and Squall were never whiny or insufferable, even if 8's english translation of S was dogshit. Fallout 1 and especially 2 were sublime. FF7 and 8 were superb. They're different as night and day. They shine in their own ways.

I was simply recollecting my memories from my childhood. Although I completed both FF7 and 8, I didn't enjoy them partly due to not being able to stand the protagonists. The only FF games I liked were 6 and Tactics.
