The story of Captain Zao, just like that of any other pre-war military ghoul is sad. The navy he served in doesn't exist anymore and the country he fought for is long gone. He has been stuck on his submarine for 200 years, forced to watch his crew turn into drooling zombies. Every time he looks through the periscope he sees the devastation brought by the war and he is torn by guilt of having taken part in the destruction of the world. He has no idea what happened to his homeland and his family, all he wants is to go home, find the truth and die peacefully. The war is over.
I really like this guy. He's not a caricature or some evil demonized communist, just a guy who served his country and grew horrified with the war and with his orders. He's not really that different from pre-war American soldiers, he just fights for a different country.
I mean "two different countries" is a gross oversimplification. It was a conflict between two vastly different ideologies. But yeah, I like this character for sure
kinda sad how "the enemy" is usually a patriot in his home country just following orders, like you. i kinda hope we get more games set in this world that shows how different countries have handled the atomic war. i dunno, wishful thinking, but moments like this make me wish to see the other side of the civilian coin. did vault equivelants exist in other parts of the world? were there minds like mr house who were able to save a major city from the immediate blast but fail to stop the general decay of society? were nations reduced to bickering tribes, is there any semblance of government or order such as the brotherhood of steel, the enclave, or the ncr? theres a literal goldmine of possible ways fallout could continue thanks to this scenario. we only saw the war from the us's perspective. what about the rest of the world?
“I’ll bring enough supplies for the both of us, all I ask is to join you on your voyage. I wish to see the state of the rest of the world. Do we have a bargain, captain?”
Someone commented how Zao reminds them of Paarthurnax from Skyrim. I can see why. An ancient warrior, from a time long since passed, who committed terrible sins in his youth out of loyalty, and ever since, has spent centuries regretting every single second of it. Wish there was a dlc where we go with Zao, and bond over us both being remnants of a dead, near forgotten era.
Good comparison. I also see their manners of speaking as similar. For the most part they speak in english, then say a word or two in their respective native languages and then translate what they said.
That's because you don't speak mandarin. If you do...imagine if I choose to arbitrarily [foreign word] a foreign word here and [foreign word] when I'm talking. No bilingual person truly talks like that, and no Chinese person, foreign born or otherwise, would as well. Plus it's poorly accented and it's clear that it's not voiced by a native mandarin speaker. Probably second-third generation Chinese-Americans who speak snippets at home.
Zao's fate was worse, than death. He suffered for 200 years, very, very much, saw all of his crew turn in bunch of ferals. I am surprised he is still sane. I don't say he didn't deserve it, but still. And now he wants to go back to China, he knows China is also destroyed by the American nukes, but he has no hate, anger for this. Just a desire to do something good for his homeland. Most of all i blame corrupt governments, pursuing their selfish goals and not giving a shit about the world, such as American and Chinese, and filthy, corrupt corporations such as Vault Tec. Those bastards are much more responsible for the apocalypse and suffering. I let Zao go, he already paid for his crimes.
damn. to think 200 years ago we didn't think twice about killing men like him. here he is, given all the reason to hate us.... but he just doesnt. i feel really sad for him. whats sadder is that HE was the one responsible for the commonwealth as we know it in fallout 4. his sub is the very thing that nuked the commonwealth, including your home in sanctuary. and he was just following orders... orders he spent 200 years regretting.
Y’all got it wrong, Captain Yao sub was carrying 5 nuclear missiles - and he launched all of them in retaliation of ours being launched. All but 1 hit its target because it malfunctioned. (made in china & all…)
My head cannon is he made it back to China but it was still under communist control, the people where told that China was always like that and only America fired nukes, when Zao spoke the truth he was sent to a labor camp and was horrified to see what communist china actually is
The most enjoyable and interesting side quest in FO4. Shame you only get a couple of nuclear targeting grenades with no way to acquire more and that they kinda suck.
There is nothing to plunder here... except for thousands of pounds of steel, lead, precious metals, missiles, computers, screens, and other miscellaneous items. 💀
@@DarthVader-sp8fe hes not the “main reason”, the whole world was nuked. he was just following orders like every other person in every country including america. he harbors a lot of guilt for his actions which is more than most in the fallout universe can say
I was swimming and found the kid and saw Zao I helped him without asking for money! Hell, I didn't even want to harm his crewmen but sadly I had to kill them. I haven't even had this game for a month yet and I hardly use my power armor I'm also level 58 and I'm not much of a gamer LOL.
China might be much safer than the US. Although there might be ghouls, there's likely no super mutants and the wildlife there might be less mutated compared to those of the US which are astonishingly large like deathclaws and mirelurks because of the FEV.
Why do you think there's all those mutants running around the wastelands? They're bioweapons made to attack China. There is undoubtedly some running around the Chinese mainland in addition to any the Chinese cooked up to attack America
Nate could hate him hard, but can choose not too. Captain Zao could choose to hate him as well but cannot do so after going through that for 200 Years.
Well he was stuck in American soil for 200 years with no one else to talk to but raiders who he tried to keep away from his ship. Poor man probably hasn't used his mother tounge in a long time which is why he misses his home.
@@smittywerben1849 200 years seeing nothing but fire and ruins, stuck to what he thought was his tomb, day and night probably thinking about his death, maybe even wishing for it. Cursed by immortality, loss of his image, gazing upon the results of the orders of his superiors. I say he suffered enough, his punishment outweighed the crimes of his orders, all he wants is to go back home. I wouldn't kill him.
I mean his English isn’t exactly good, you can see that clearly. His pronunciation is fine but his grammar needs some work, could simply be a language problem.
Nate: Yea, you know I'm really pissed off about my son being taken from me, but you nuked the US like 200 years ago and that doesn't both me at all. Everyone: Seriously?
