To be fair, these are smaller scale nukes. And canonically as far as the story goes, you only use one nuke to destroy the Scorchbeast Nest and kill the Queen before they end up spreading to other parts of the country (which is why Scorchbeasts don't appear anywhere else here)

Well, only up to three. Anything more will cause the game to crash.

Lonesome Road, DLC for New Vegas, basically encouraged you to nuke both factions to get all the shiny unique items. Of course, you also pretty much get told you're a massive asshole for doing so.

I think if there's one point anyone would take away from the opening of Fallout 1 and its lecture about how the "war" lasted about twenty minutes and within that period, all of civilization was gone, it's that "nukes are bad." Having big lavish trailers where people cheerfully watch the bombs go off as they incinerate and irradiate West Virginia... it'd be like if they made a sequel to Spec Ops where Walker goes back into combat and incinerates a convoy of terrorists with white phosphorus and everyone congratulates him for what a great job he did. Honestly, it feels sadly in line with a lot of Bethesda Fallout - it wants to be critical of America, like the old games, but it's too fascinated with that aesthetic and ideal. I mean, look at Liberty Prime. In a vacuum, he's a brilliant satire of American imperialism - a weapon of mass destruction through the lens of a cartoon superhero, who spouts lines like FREEDOM WILL NEVER FALL even as he leads the charge into conquering Canada. But the game constantly frames him in such a way that everyone just walked away thinking, "Liberty Prime is fucking rad! Woo! Murrcurr!"

In all fairness, an in-game benefit to doing it doesn't mean the game's message is encouraging it. It can still be narratively played as a bad thing, at best a grim necessity and at worst a big "you bastard" moment where the player/protag is revealed to just genuinely be an ass, if the mechanics encourage it. Thing is, that requires a narrative. You know, one of *those.*

That's not true! Bethesda learned quite a few new ways to fuckup. They both removed mod support AND put in a asset-recycle store. They replaced shitty writing with no-writing. They replaced world building with 50's radio dramas and pre-recorded messages. They made it even buggier than before AND with equally buggy server + online only mechanics. They went from dialogue, to dialogue wheel, and now finally no-dialogue! They went from character building to randomized character. There were TONS of new innovations!

Yahtzee doesn't. _Fallout 76_ is like most Bethesda games, never doing anything very well and with way more ambition than it can realize, but dodging just enough glitches to go from point A to point B until you stop playing and it becomes an online joke factory. It wasn't much worse than its predecessors, nor was it better. It's not a "90-100" or a "0-10" game. It's a 5/10 game, which in today's grade-inflated world puts it right at 76%.

I mentioning a Bethesda games horrid glitches is like mentioning how many people are shot in America per month it isn't exactly new.

The average Internet hysteria hobbyist has a real problem where it must treat everything as "the worst ever" or "the best ever". When, of course, if you think everything that comes out every week is either a cause to champion or reason for a tantrum-style breakdown, you probably lack perspective. It's brain-melting when dealing with Bethesda open-world action RPGs, which usually eat, breathe and live "so-so" from beginning to end.

See, as much as he is known for doing a lot of shitting on games, Yahtzee is indeed here for us. Mostly. When the planets align ever so rightly.

Usually, what happens instead in a free-market economy isn't that the developers will learn or change their ways - it's that smaller developers will wise up and create what the consumers have been craving and then skyrocket into a huge chunk of marketshare. The greedy companies will probably be greedy until it's too late, but where there is a market there will be someone to fill the void and make a superior product. That's why CDPR, for instance, went from a small company to basically everyone's favorite very quickly.

That was especially irritating with the Diablo Immortal controversy. Gaming journalists were pretending like a guy who had paid over a thousand bucks to be there asking them is it an out of season April Fool's joke was like he had literally, not figuratively, assaulted them and that the poor Blizzard had to be defended and consoled.

I wish the sound, sane consumer complaints about the Bethesda-standard past-its-sell-date engine, the glitch-fest experience and the "Fallout as MMO" premise had been more heard. Instead, Bethesda P.R. wisely pushed the world to focus on a clique of shameful dweebs whining about the material for a video-game-branded gym bag, for which they paid "sucker" with a U.S. dollar sign in front of it, something to which most video game buyers and most people in general will never relate.

Todd Howard is currently director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, if we want serious talk beneath Yahtzee's video for some crazy reason. _Fallout 76's_ so-so sales don't seem to have done any harm to his position, likely because its financials favor _Fallout 76's_ continued earnings through DLC. Given the "mostly positive" reviews of its most recent DLC on Steam (which look nuts to me, but whatever), the Bethesda model of "focus on our last release" seems to keep shareholders happy.

Having to "find my own fun" is cool, but it should be reflected in the price. It's the difference between buying a book and buying a pen.

The "create your own fun" mentality only really works in lower priced indie games, and it depends on the amount of tools that you are provided in order to create that fun. It does not, however, work in a fully priced triple-A game that somehow manages to have less content and less mechanics than the previously mentioned indie games.
