Fallout New Vegas: Honest Hearts Review 

"I don't enjoy killing, BUT..." Dead Money and Old World Blues are the best DLC for New Vegas imo, But if nothing else, remembering how good the actual dilemma of the core factions of the base game makes me wanna run it again.

I actually always level up survival to 55 because you get blood sausages and thin red paste which are great healing items and have a 50% drop rate from any living creature, eating the paste and sausages together is 12hp per second for 20 seconds, its really quite worth it to just replace stim packs.

The survivalist text story was one of the hidden gems in Honest Hearts, shame it was just background fluff, but it gives you the coolest Ranger armor skin ever, not to mention his fucking .50 cal service rifle

my first playthrough of honest hearts: spend 1 hour save scumming trying to save the caravan mash through dialogue go with band-aid man because what the fuck else is there kill everything with 100 guns get bad ending because didn't do any quests

Survival is a dump stat *after* you have gotten the them's good eating perk. Making all fleshy enemies drop stimpak level healing items that are worth hundreds of caps is pretty good.

The story of Randal Clark will always make honest hearts worth it for me

This DLC is actually the best place in the entire game to find crafting material for buffs, healing items and poisons. It actually even adds new perks that are amazing and make Survival worth having.

It always pissed my off that you couldn't collect all of Randall Clark's notes and as a whole show them to Daniel to help him see that he wanted The Sorrows to learn how to defend themselves and not constantly be on the run.

For me it's a real shame just how much was obviously cut out of this DLC. Joshua Graham is such a cool character, both in voice acting and dialogue, but yeah, the rest of the DLC is kinda boring, repetitive and it lacks most of the depth of New Vegas. Just some more quest options, or hell just the ability to talk to the different tribal NPC's and get their look at things would have helped a lot. Hell, the only merchant in it is friggin' Joshua, cause he just screams salesman, right? There is some cool stuff in there with the Survalist's staches, but that's about it. If you're buying this DLC all you really get out of it is the brief but awesome moments with Joshua Graham, and some terminal entries you could read on the wiki. Oh, and that magical moment when you experience actual rain for the first time.

There's really no good reason to side with Daniel. What happens if another violent tribe finds the sorrows in their new home? Are they just going to continually flee conflict in a tribal post apocalypse scenario? Good analysis by the way man.

Of all the Fallout DLC, this is the one I always hear the most about, in particular around the central character. What a damn shame that it's so sterile and weak in comparison to the other strengths that make New Vegas special. Stuff like being able to bypass the item limitation by relying on weightless health kits and ammo has always put me off of these kinds of games, and the other negatives aren't helping. I'm sure it's fine as an additional bonus story but the previous DLC you covered was way, way more interesting. More importantly, great video. I know you're a huge fan of New Vegas and I highly appreciate how objective you are in covering it; you don't allow your love for the game to cloud your judgement. Keep up the great work.

I basically do this DLC right after completing Goodsprings as it's honestly too easy to do when you eventually end up in the area surrounding New Vegas normally.

To me, Daniel needed more to do as I do believe the writers wanted him to serve as a countermeasure / ideological opponent to Joshua. The narrative worked fine being carried on the back of Keith Szarabajka's phenomenal VA as Joshua Graham, but this, as a consequence of the allotted time/scope, gave Daniel absolutely nothing of his own. No dilemmas outside of a quick side quest that admittedly allowed us to see the folly of being an overprotective mom (and I'm not talking about Waking Cloud.) Perhaps, if he had more quests revolving around his time in New Canaan he would have had more depth as a one-note pacifist. Quests that indicated he held a resentment towards Joshua for coming back and coincidentally bringing the wrath of Caesar down on the Mormons. Maybe expositing on how New Canaan spent its final days, what decisions and conflicts did the leadership run into, what were the conflicting viewpoints Joshua might've had against their bishop or Daniel, etc. After all, Joshua knew what Caesar was capable of firsthand while the New Canaanites completely underestimated the White Legs and were unprepared. Side-note: Survival, while lacking in the base-game, is really fun in the Fallout Dust mod when you can poison your Throwing Spears. Especially with high-end poisons like Dark datura or Tremble. Still takes second place to ranged weaponry and explosives, buuuuut when your in a sandbox that ONLY promotes survival and item management, it turns into a really good option. So there's that.

Best thing about Honest Hearts: Randall Clark's log entries. Worst thing about Honest Hearts: The story feels uneventful. I like the idea of Joshua Graham redemption story but...the tribes that you interact with feel less like individuals with memorable personality and more like...generic NPCs in tribal inspired outfits. Most companions have something going for them, Cass wants revenge, Gannon wants to reconcile the legacy of his father, Boone is a grieving widower with PTSD who doesn't know what to stand for anymore, Lily is a mutant grandma with dementia, Veronica wants to explore the world and make a change to her closed off society, Raul is a ghoul overcomes the trauma he's been through over the many years he's lived. Even Rex and ED-E's are more interesting. Follows-Chalk just wants to explore and expand his knowledge beyond his community, which seems on the surface like Veronica in ways, but he has almost no personality otherwise beyond stupid little jokes. Waking Cloud...her husband died and she's a mom. Neither of them have a rich backstory or anything beyond surface level. Your Dead Money companions all have pretty meaty backgrounds and interesting choices to make. Honest Heart's companions feel like after thoughts to me.

I have been binging your content lately and I still can't believe how unknown you are.

The best thing for me from Honest Hearts was the Survivalist side story. It gave me a reason to actually care about the tribes and more importantly their connection to Zion. So naturally I entered full slaughter mode with Joshua, but convinced him to spare the leader for the sake of not going totally overboard with the bloodlust.

Honest Hearts is good, but not the best dlc. The quests are more than just fetch quests and even the ones that are aren’t bad. Also NV does have interesting factions/politics, but it’s not unique to NV as some other games do it too.

I hope you also make one of these for lonesome road, it was the best dlc imo

Only good part of Honest Parts is one of the best examples of using journal entries and such to tell a compelling story, which also sets up some of the DLC's world building

It's funny how Dead Money was hated by a lot of people at release but now has a cult following and this DLC has the exact opposite. It usee to be liked, but now it's slowly being hated.

Wow. You really put every single problem I have with Honest Hearts to words. Even how you shot the tribe guy that is supposed to save you at first, which I also did. There is a reason I never played Honest Hearts more then once or twice. Why should I play a DLC where the central conflict is only one real option? You always go with Gram because running away will never work. You have to fight to keep your land.

While I do love this DLC, I always found the final choice between Daniel and Joshua to be strange. When I side with Daniel and help evacuate the Sorrows, Joshua and I still massacre every single White Legs tribal and take out Salt-Upon-Wounds. The only difference is the Sorrows didn't have to participate? I dunno.

I think yes man fits in with the politics of New Vegas, NCR is a liberal (liberal meaning following the enlightenment, not left leaning) democracy Ceaser's Legion is fascist Mr. house is authoritarian Yes Man Is Anarchist you are able to see a ton about political ideologies through the different factions liberal democracies (like America, Europe, ect) generally increase the living standards of people, but have incredible inequalities Fascism (like the axis powers during ww2) is terrible in almost every way, but with the right arguments people can fall for it Authoritarianism (like China, Singapore, ect) can accomplish incredible things, but that does not always correlate to human happiness Anarchism (like a few states before Russia consumed them all) can give a lot of freedom, but also have no laws that can be enforced I do not agree with Fallout New Vegas on a lot of their politics, but their views are interesting.

Why didn’t you mention the Survivalist. Honest Hearts is probs the most disappointing DLC but It’s Fetch quest has one of the most HEARTFELT Survival stories after the conclusion of the Great War.

I find old world blues to be the worse dlc only because it's just kinda meh but Honest heart adds a lot of cool shit but man the fact all the cool characters and followers just vanish pisses me off like Joshua should of been a main stay follower

Nice video but I don't agree with your sentiment about this DLC. It is pretty clear from your pip boy map that you didn't explore Zion, you probably didn't read about Rendall Clark, the father in the caves and the vault 22 expedition...Honestly the story of the survavalist is heartbreaking and exploring every cave and location of the map to unfold it is what I like about this DLC. At the end of the day I agree that the main quest is very basic but I feel like it has to be this way, it's still a decent quest and Joshua is a very cool character. This DLC is recommended for level 10 players and it's canonically the first one you should play and trust me playing it at level 10 or so with little amounts of stimpacks and mediocre stats and weapons makes it really fun.

The game is universally better in hardcore.
