Fallout is a media franchise of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games-and later action role-playing games-created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, at Interplay Entertainment. The series is set during the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd centuries, and its atomicpunk retrofuturistic setting and art work are influenced by the post-war culture of 1950s United States, with its combination of hope for the promises of technology and the lurking fear of nuclear annihilation. A forerunner of Fallout is Wasteland, a 1988 game developed by Interplay Productions to which the series is regarded as a spiritual successor.
The series' first title, Fallout, was developed by Black Isle Studios and released in 1997, and its sequel, Fallout 2, the following year. With the tactical role-playing game Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, development was handed to Micro Forté and 14 Degrees East. In 2004, Interplay closed Black Isle Studios,[ and continued to produce Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, an action game with role-playing elements for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, without Black Isle Studios. Fallout 3, the third entry in the main series, was released in 2008 by Bethesda Softworks, and was followed by Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Fallout 4 was released in 2015, and Fallout 76 released on November 14, 2018.
Bethesda Softworks owns the rights to the Fallout intellectual property.[After acquiring it, Bethesda licensed the rights to make a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) version of Fallout to Interplay. The MMORPG got as far as beta stage under Interplay, but a lengthy legal dispute between Bethesda Softworks and Interplay halted the development of the game and led to its eventual cancellation, as Bethesda claimed in court that Interplay had not met the terms and conditions of the licensing contract. The case was settled in early 2012.

I've heard multiple channels bring up that Hank didnt recognize that Moldaver wasn't from vault 31, but its mentioned in that scene that vault 32 told 33 their last overseer had died, and she was supposedly an interim overseer. Hank just thinks a replacement will be sent from 31 eventually, and will deal with this peon for the time being.

Exactly, they call out that he died in the famine when blight hit their crops. What whole episode is still the most clumsy writing of the series, imho, but they did kinda cover that hole at least.

Hadn’t it been months since it had happened though? There’s no way Vault 33 should have been unaware of what had happened in Vault 32 especially since it’s shown how easily they can communicate with each other.

@@Stoneador that was a much bigger plot hole to me than the not recognizing her thing. Are they sealed off from each other or not? If the other one was full of raiders and has presumably been breached, why leave their connecting door open? I thought they were setting up it being a super special occasion with the two vaults communicating at all, then they don't even bother shutting the door when it's clearly dangerous.

I'm a bit more interested in just _how_ is she still alive in 2281. Cooper became a Ghoul. Hank and his 'buddies' were cryogenically frozen. How did she make it to the Wasteland? She was not part of Vault-Tec, an enemy quite actually so she's unlikely to have been frozen as well.

On the topic of the absurdity of all the lights coming back on, that is accurate to the games completely. New Vegas has a quest called “That Lucky Old Sun” in which the player restores a power plant and can choose where to distribute the energy. The options include The Strip and NCR base, Freeside (a poor area of New Vegas) and the wasteland as a whole. It doesn’t make sense how all the wiring would go out from the Helios One power plant after nuclear war but it happens in the game nonetheless so it’s not really a fair nitpick that the same thing happens in the boneyard/shadysands.

I always figured Shady Sands and the rest of the NCR would just use power from the Gecko Nuclear Power Plant. I don't see why Lynette and Co won't use it as a bargain chip or just revenue stream. Btw, Helios was fully restored by Elijah and his chapter, it's just NCR to dumb to operate by themselves.

On the topic of the vault being open about sex, they are all in *very* close proximity and population numbers are strictly regulated. It makes sense to me that sex is talked about with the same gravity as the amount of crops planted & pipes repaired. It's just another task.

Also, on the topic of the ghoul's burial. It seemed implied that he got on the wrong side of a crime boss and was buried there as punishment. The other hunters threaten him with "we'll leave you buried here another 30 years for the don to dig you up and cut another piece off of you".

@@randyll13 yeah, it's more like a pre-puritanical, pragmatic approach. I mean they very clearly have arranged marriages and they're swapping dwellers to try to maintain some genetic diversity. This has likely been trained into them for the last two hundred years. I think you're spot on with the Ghoul too - he was basically kept locked away but kept alive because he was useful. I don't think this is something ghouls are routinely doing in the wasteland, I think it was a specific kind of punishment designed to be cruel, but not fatal. I mean, it's still silly - ghouls still need to eat, and presumably they still produce bodily waste as a result, but it's about a million times less silly than "Kid in a fridge", which is also canon.

I think the ghoul was being tortured in the grave. The other bounty hunters talk about how the guy who has him in the ground pulls him up to cut a piece off every now and then. Maybe the RadAway was to keep him incapacitated so he doesn't dig himself up?

18:00 In the Ghouls flashback storyline Moldava im pretty sure is the one who invented/perfected cold fusion (then every company she had ever worked for was bought by Vault-Tec). I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say that she might also have had access to cryogenic technology or managed to recruit someone that knew about it. She may have had the resources to have her own fallout shelter and cryopods built upon finding out what Vault-Tec was planning.

Maybe she was the one whose leadership lead to the mayhem in 32, because she basically told them they were being lied to by vault-tec and then led a group outside of the vault? But if that were the case we probably would never find out, since she is dead and everyone in vault 32 is too... Edit: Okay it doesn't make sense that Hank doesn't recognize her then. Possibly? Unless he doesn't know what happened.

@@Taliesin2 My current head-canon is that Moldava joins the NCR after being unfrozen from her own cryo pod(unaffiliated to Vault-Tec), rises to a leadership position in Shady Sands(SS) due to her being a pre-war scientist (where we see the flashback of Moldava with Lucy's mother in SS), Leaves SS to start her quest for the Cold Fusion Tech, while she is away SS is nuked by Hank after he gets his kids back, when Moldava nears the completion of her Cold Fusion quest she then orchestrates an attack on Vault 33 to get the last piece that she needs (the password from Hank). It's not perfect but this way Hank wouldn't recognize her.

@@Taliesin2 Also, my impression of the Vault 32 deaths is that they rebelled against their overseer after finding out somehow that they were breeding stock for the cryo-managers, then they killed themselves so they couldn't be used like that. I don't think it makes much sense.... surely it would take more than that to persuade everyone to commit suicide but I think that's what they were going for.

Muldaver isnt from Vault 31 or 32 this is established by the fact that she knows Rose and lived in Shady Sands for years. They say this multiple times

It's possible she met Rose while _in_ 32 and that she left the vault after Rose went to 33, then somehow reached out to Rose and told her about Shady Sands.

Plothole 1: Vault 32 has been dead for 2 years. Is it just coincidence Moldaver and the raiders arrived just as 33 sent the request for a marriage? Why hadn't 31 been in contact with 32 for reports? If they entered 32 with Rose's Pip-boy from the outside, why not just open the door to 33 especially when they clearly didn't care for the lives of 33? Plot hole 2: How did 31 clean up 32 in less than 24hrs? Did Bud wake up more 31ers and then put them back to sleep? Knit picking PJ: 33 isn't conservative but just naive and collectivist. They state in the show that the original inhabitants were selected to be compliant and positive. 200 years of structured social conditioning allows 31ers to dominate them, I think the plan being to use 33ers as peasants in the vault or if they were meant to be released to ensure the 31ers would be in charge on the out side. Allowing sex but not breeding out side of marriage is another form of control with the real consideration for preventing inbreeding. It reinforces the collectivist society as the 33ers have to consider how fun or stress relief sex could lead to genetically compromised offspring that could endanger the vaults future. I think the manipulation of collectivism is the experiment that 31 is undertaking.

My head canon was that Moldaver was/became a ghoul and that’s how she lived. Their skin doesn’t just fall off and they become ugly as we see with Thaddeus. It happens as damage to their bodies happens. So she could very well just be a ghoul who looks nice because nothing has happened to her yet.

New vegas itself is basically a post post apocalypse Ncr and legion both hold whole states that games awesome but it creates a very uncertain future for your post apocalypse franchise that Tim Cain the original fallout creator has argued shouldn't fully recover like that

It was only Chris Avellone who wanted to nuke NCR & Vegas etc to return to tribalist days of post apocalypse, Josh Sawyer was happy to proceed with post post-apocalypse with NCR. We don't know what other authors' thoughts on this who worked on the franchise tho. Personally I agree with Sawyer; I like progress in fictional settings instead of the ones that stay pretty much the same for thousand of years which are usually fantasy settings. Also about the Ghouls; they are way more powerful now then they were in the games: In the games they are essentially ugly humans with waaay longer life(if we look at Raul from NV they go old but apparently very slowly), in the show they have immidiate regeneration now. Also I don't remember them being "timebombs" to become feral at any moment, they went feral if they are exposed to further, greater amounts of radiation after being a ghoul.

When it comes to Moldover and her raid on vault 33, sure it was violent and people died, but actually far fewer people died than the fight scene implied (it looked like the raiders killed pretty much everyone apart from the small group they took hostage, but then look at how many vault dwellers were left in the big meeting afterwards, the hall was almost full). Even her "ultimatum" (save these people or save your daughter) was kind of toothless, because they all lived. She basically put on a big, bloody show, but she pretty much took Hank away with about as minimal bloodshed as possible, which feels pretty NCR, they don't shy away from killing but they don't kill unnecessarily. Also the fact that her people seemed to have the upper hand, but she still left a bunch of her people behind to be prisoners, reinforces the idea that those were either hired raiders, or they were people from Shady Sands so broken by the disaster that they couldn't fit in there anymore.

Just for Preston, please read up on the "Caesar's Legion was swallowed up by the BoS" Theory, because it is really plausible and bat-shit at the same time and fits right up your alley. The evidence consists of names, banners and the ideals of society after all. :P

Love the channel and enjoyed listening to this. I came to Fallout never having played the games but I'd watched several hours of my friends play games in the series to I only the most basic framework of the world...I really dug this one. While there were some definite sniffs of Nolan's Westworld I was also impressed at how quirky and irreverent this show felt at times to balance out the drama. The three leads were all outstanding which also helped. One thing you guys talk a lot about on here: Maybe I'm misremembering, and I can't remember the specific dialog, but I thought in the flashback to Moldaver's Communist meeting that in her conversation with the Ghoul she implies she has a plan in place to escape the upcoming bombing.

1. In the first episode they said the ghoul was divorced. 2. In fallout 4 you found find a ghoul kid who's sane that was trapped in a fridge for decades. Which was weird because one of the reasons of ghouls going insane was because of isolation. 3. A theory mine is radiation it's not turning ghouls feral but some kind of bio agent that's why the ghouls need the med stims.

I'm torn on the release all at once vs weekly debate. For me personally, I can only watch one episode every day or two anyway due to irl commitments, and then I have to avoid social media for a couple weeks to stay spoiler free. At the same time, I think a lot of the criticism of Wanda-Vision, for instance, centred around failure to manage expectations. A lot of stuff they put in that show was just easter eggs which, if people had binged the whole thing, would have been obvious, but since it was releasing weekly, people instead were speculating on which things were plot relevant and it led to a lot of over-inflated expectations that the show then didn't meet. Andor did it right. The stuff people were speculating on was all plot-relevant. Easter eggs were kept to a minimum and were pretty obvious and didn't create false expectations. However, you can't really do a show like Fallout, which has always been about satirising pop culture, _without_ all of the easter eggs. For that reason I think it made sense to release it all at once, so people didn't start speculating about stuff that was just a throwaway joke.

I just finished the show and had no issues with spoilers. I watched 2 episodes a couple weeks back and 6 this weekend. The show was great, but the story was pretty generic. Not that captivating to wait week after week.

Them not knowing they were raiders is a big plot hole cuz the Brain guy was communicating on the computer via messages with Norm. So the brain guy would have known they were all dead and so did norms dad so why did he accept them coming in?

It is possible that the Vault 31 plants do not communicate back unless they absolutely have to reduce risk of the experiment being exposed. So even a two year radio silence might not be abnormal. It's also possible that the Overseer in 32 died before they could message 31 or 33 for help. Just guesses of course and they are stretches but not impossible.

I think at times Maximus is meant to be a nod to the ‘low intelligence’ player character interactions we see in the games. He is obviously a moron and very childlike, fairly cowardly. This is juxtaposed by the fact he comes from the dominating military faction of the wasteland, but he isn’t thought very highly of in this organisation, they also see him as an idiot. He wears the suit and takes the mantle of a brotherhood of steel knight, but in reality he is so far from this. This allows for him to provide comedic relief at times, but perhaps was leant on a bit too much in later episodes. Overall I liked it though. I felt that Lucys character was well played by the actress but maybe didn’t follow the themes set out in the beginning of the series. The ghoul was cool but I think I preferred Lucy and Maximus. The ghoul seemed more of a story device to push them onwards and actually get stuff done.

It gets 8/10 for me due to plot/logic holes and cheap shock value at times. The show was beautiful, pacing was great, Easter eggs and fan service were plentiful, the characters were funny and likeable, the story wasn’t overly complex nor overly simple. However. It made no sense for a dog who had just attacked someone who’d dismembered her master, then been stabbed by that attacker, to suddenly become completely non-aggressive, and even loyal, to that attacker just because he’d stabbed her with some magic stimpak needle. That’s not how dogs behave, Alsatians least of all. Four also disappears from the story once Cooper rescues her from inside the Red Rocket cooler. Expected her to show up at Moldaver’s camp, and she didn’t. Just, gone. And Moldaver… What a mess. Why bother featuring her in the Pre-War flashbacks? Could have replaced her with anybody that was anti Vault-Tec. There was no addressing her immortality in the slightest. She wasn’t a ghoul, she wasn’t Vault-Tec, she wasn’t on the list of people in cryo-pods in Vault 31. She WAS in Shady Sands. They might explain it in season 2, might. But my expectations are that they’ll move on to another villain and forget her completely.

Hey fellas, as someone who is a similarly big Fallout fan (beaten every game multiple times etc.) I'm going to explain why I think some fans have an issue with the show at a deeper level (Personally, I liked it a lot but I had a few major issues) Bethesda's version of Fallout is focused on the Mad Max style post apocalypse and the show follows their aesthetic, tone and lore. They purposefully set 3 and 4 in the East Coast to purposefully distance itself from the original 2 games in the West Coast that were showing civilization returning which made sense. The problem is that they decided to set it in a location that long time fans have a personal investment in (California) and basically wipe it all out to a pre Fallout 1 level apocalypse. It's feels invalidating. My personal biggest issue with the show is about how they handle the war itself. Turning it from a war caused by the horrors of human nature to a pure anti-capitalism message is antithetical to the meaning behind 'War never changes.' It's not an ideology that caused the end of the world, it's human nature. Fallout's satire of America focuses on American exceptionalism which ties into capitalism but isn't limited to it. (Fun fact, the Enclave are a shadow government puppeting the US who use Vault Tec to their own ends, not the other way around) There are also tons of retcons, lore inconsistencies and plot holes (Shady Sands isn't even the place that got blown up, it's the Boneyard) I honestly believe the vast majority are fine but there are a couple that are a bit egregious (Mr. House at the Vault Tec meeting being a good one as it makes the fact he got the date wrong for the bombs dropping by a day hilarious instead of tragic) I think there were three obvious fixes to the majority of these: 1) The TV show is just an adaptation instead of trying to fit around a game series with way too much lore and canon 2) Just set it during or just after/before Fallout 1, the ramshackle look fits nicely and you can do a lot with the lore as it's a very grey area 3) Don't use California, use one of the dozens of other states that we haven't seen yet tl;dr show good but doesn't actually understand the source material in a lot of ways.

I dunno, I still think people are making too much of a big deal out of the nuking of Shady Sands. Listen, I'm a huge fan of the originals (I played them at release and was instantly a fan for life) and New Vegas is not only my favourite of all of the Fallout games, it's probably in my top 5 games of all time. However, the one thing that never made sense is how little progress towards restoration the surface made in 200 years, to the extent there are still skeletons from the original war just everywhere, even in settled areas. The nuking of Shady Sands comes closer to giving an explanation for this than any of the games ever has. What if it was _always_ Vault-Tech behind the scenes, holding back process on the surface so that they could take charge when they eventually emerge? After all, if they pop out of a vault and society has already returned to normality, they lose all of their power and influence. Why is this good? Well, because once we have an explanation, people can try to look for a fix, and we can finally see what the post-post-apocalyptic Fallout world might look like. And maybe cold fusion is a step towards that. I'd love to see the next game explore more rebuilding (settlements in 4 were already a big step in that direction).

There are numerous issues with this show, but the biggest is definitely how broken the inciting incident is. Everything with Moldaver and the raiders makes so little sense when you realize what their motivation was. The raiders could have easily just threatened to kill all of Vault 33 unless Lucy’s dad gave the code, but instead they kidnap him, leave, and don’t let the Vault 33 people know what just happened. Then they could have focused on rescuing the head guy. I really liked a lot of this show, but it’s so hard to give it any praise when it’s fundamentally broken from the start.

Also, the airship at the BoS base says 'Prydwen'. It's a different font to the one in Fallout 4 but then... time has passed & its travelled across a continent. It wouldn't make sense for the BoS (even separated on different coasts) to name two airships the same. I think that's a subtle hint that the cannon end to Fallout 4 has Maxson surviving and eventually returning West. Which makes sense. You can finish the Minutemen path without vilifying the BoS & vice versa but you can't side with The Institute or Railroad without annoying the BoS. There's also a narrow pathway to save Paladin Danse without killing Elder Maxson. So a cannon end with the BoS healthy & Maxson alive leaves the most wiggle room in the ending for other plotlines. The West Coast BoS are a shadow of their former selves in New Vegas but strong again in the TV show. It's subtle & you need to have played the sorta optional BoS story in NV to realise. Even if you help them at Helios & lift them up - they're still not powerful enough to tangle with the NCR, Legion or House. And sure, they could have capitalised on the absence of the NCR after Shady Sands was bombed but that doesn't exclude the East/West unification idea. Perhaps the Prydwen showing up is so subtle that its poorly executed. There's excitement & fanfare when it arrives but its never really explained why. It's just kinda a bunch if acolytes getting horny for Knights being around. Then for the fans that zoom in & realise its probably the Prydwen... and likely been out West for a minute - the new ruthlessness & weirdness of the BoS makes sense. They were always a bit strange, but Maxson made them ruthless to the point of psychopathy. Some of the repeat fetch quests they send you on in 4 are straight up fucked.

Nuking Shady Sands without letting the fans see what it has evolved into over the years, is just lazy writing. they didn't want to come up with new lore so they rebooted everything into the dark ages, so they can re-use all the old fallout tropes without people asking why nothing has been rebuilt in 200 years.

American government betrays it's constitutional and republican principles beginning campaign of terror leading to genocide living states no choice but to rebel. Chosen One using his second amendment rights assemble a militia from the natives of 3 states and overthrows tyrannical government. Like, by this logic Confederacy was in the right, although not all of the rebellious states practice slavery, only Nevada. And I agree with you that it's the most left lining from the Fallout games, the first one just being anti-communist piece and the NV is heavily pro-primitivist, but the second installment still puts state above federal government, which makes it right wing in US at least.
