In māori whaka is (pronounced fucka) means to do or to make. It sounds like an insult. Ahau means I and is pronounced as (a ho) also sounds like an insult in english. In German gross is big, but in English it's yucky or distasteful.

Well, sometimes Japanese words do look like something dirty in Italian. For instance, last night I made ハムカツ and my family joked about how "katsu" sounded like "cazzo", which is the Italian word for dick. It took me a lot not to giggle while saying "katsu" or "gatsu" (when I say the months)

So cute! Sometimes similar sounding words have the same meaning. Ewe (English) and juh (Hungarian) sound similar and have the same meaning only by accident. The English word "coach" (meaning long-distance bus), however, does come from the Hungarian word "kocsi" (car, baby carriage, train car, horse-carriage) which is derived from the name of the town Kocs. ("Kocsi" means "of Kocs" or "from Kocs," meaning something made there or from there.)

German: Handy (means mobile phone) English: handy (means useful, in german: handlich/praktisch) Swissgerman: poste (means shopping, in german: Einkaufen) German: posten (means to post) Swissgerman: Müsli (means little mouse, in german: Mäuschen) German (and many other languages): Müsli (means muesli/cereals, Swiss German: Müesli) Swiss standard german: Fahrausweis (means: drivers license, in german: Führerschein) German: Fahrausweis (means: ticket, swiss standard german: Billet)
@701983
@701983 6 лет назад
As far as I know, "driving license" is "Führerausweis" in Swiss German, which is pretty weird for Germans and Austrians. Because "Ausweis" mostly means "ID card" and "Führer" gets likely associated with "Adolf Hitler" in this context. "Führerausweis" sounds like Hitler's ID card.
@nirutivan9811
@nirutivan9811 6 лет назад
Just Curious Okay officially it is Führerausweis, but I say nearly never Führerausweis, most of the time I (and everyone I know) use the more colloquial Fahrausweis. And germans say Führerschein, this could mean Hitlers ticket.
@701983
@701983 6 лет назад
Yeah, it's all about habit. Nobody in Austria/Germany thinks of Hitler, when he hears "Bergführer, Fremdenführer, Führerschein,...". Only if the word is used in an unfamiliar way, the "Hitler"-connotation appears. For all non-German-speakers: "Führer" means "leader", but also "guide" or "pilot". I only knew "Führerausweis" from Swiss newspapers. But I believe you of course, when you say, "Fahrausweis" is colloquial Swiss German for driving license. And just for completion, for German-interested viewers: There are three common words for "ticket" (bus, train) in German: "Fahrausweis", "Fahrkarte" and "Fahrschein". Might be a regional thing, which word is used more frequently.

Something really crazy happened to me and to my wife during our honeymoon trip to Santiago, Chile. And yet Portuguese and Spanish share the same linguistic root, they can be dramatically different sometimes. So, as I was saying, my wife and I were on the plane travelling to Santiago and, sometime after dinner, she wanted to have the pudding the flight attendant had given us, but we didn't have any silverware. So, we both stood up to talk to her, mainly because I wanted to use the toilet. I honestly didn't know how to say "spoon" in Spanish, so I relied on some "Portuñol" (Portuguese and Español) and I said: "nosotros queremos una 'cojer'"[ko.her](because in Portuguese the word for spoon is "colher" [ko.li.Er]). The flight attendant then got ashamed and shocked! (Only then I realised I had said sth inappropriate, I just didn't know what). And then I tried using mimics and even English (I'd like a spoon, please!). Only after calming down from her shock she said: "oh, a 'cuchara!' only after returning to Brazil I discovered that "cojer" in Spanish means "having sex"... That's why I never tried speaking Spanish again...
