A historic landmark in Rancho Palos Verdes has closed, possibly for good, due to shifting and sliding land near the property. Wayfarers Chapel, also known as "The Glass Church," made the announcement Thursday.
"Effective immediately, we are extremely devastated to announce the closure of Wayfarers Chapel and its surrounding property due to the accelerated land movement in our local area," a notice on the church's website reads.
KTLA's Omar Lewis reports on Feb. 15, 2024.

I grew up in the Palos Verde area. My parents bought a home there just before I was born. That was in 1952. I can remember going to that church many times. Especially during Christmas. When ever family came to visit us from the northeast. We'd take them there, because the views are spectacular. The Palos Verde area has always had a problem with land slipping. Portuguese Bend is a prime example. A massive landslide there in the early 50's or late 40's, took away a few dwellings, and the road. I don't if developers have built on the land, but it used be prohibited from building there.
@adammwalch
@adammwalch 5 месяцев назад
Thank you Ms Briggs for bringing up the development issue, if even tangentially. My mother was one of the founders of the city of RPV, and it was absolutely established in the city's charter that the moratorium on residential development within the slide zone was to be adhered to. In the 1990's this moratorium was challenged by certain interests, and they won.

@@adammwalch Mores the pity. History is bound to repeat itself if because of greed or just plain loss of common sense. Especially if those of us who do remember, now mostly elderly, our warnings are dismissed. In the end, lives might be lost, homes and buildings, homes and associated infrastructure, definitely, will be again lost to the sea. Millions, if not more dollars, will be lost once again. Most people do not take the time to read the disclosures concerning property sales required by most states. 🙄

The first time I ever saw this chapel was on the TV show The OC back in the day! For those of you that watched it, Julie Cooper was getting married to Caleb Nichol at this beautiful chapel. I was like OMG where the hell is this place ?!? Then The OC filmed there again, after the character died & they had his funeral there. When I finally saw this gorgeous place in person I was blown away. I can see why so many folks wanna get married here. It's stunning, beautiful, & a work of art.

The same force that created the beautiful cliffs and ocean views is also what causes unstable ground. Californians shouldn’t forget that the ground beneath our feet is responsible for both the beauty and destruction of our landscape.

The geology of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, plus recent heavy rains. Tilted layers of rock with layers of clay in between. Soak the clay, and it starts slipping.

God does not dwell in handmade temples. Your own Bible states that.
@ericfleetwood6744

@@EXROBOWIDOW Good explanation of the geology. I would add that in some areas the practice of building housing, adding landscaping, and watering the landscaping caused water to get below the clay level, which led to slippage. There are places where the land has moved so much that there are boundary disputes ("Your fence is now entirely on my land").

The Bible says the Church is the “bride of Christ”, and HE is the bridegroom, ahh.. “marriage”.. when “the two become one”, but more so, a Covenant, “You are mine, and I am yours.” So there can really be only and only ONE Church ( Matt.16). After all, what do you call a groom with many brides?
