Famicom Dojo's Hiro Reacts to the NES

Here at Famicom Dojo, we spend a lot of time marveling over the Famicom, and how foreign it must seem outside of Japan. But what's just as foreign is this gray little toaster with these monotone cartridges called the "NES" to those who grew up with a little cream and red system called the "Family Computer".
Vinnk returns to Japan with his "instant" NES collection, and shows it off to Hiro, the proprietor of the eponymous Famicom Dojo retro store in Kyushu, to get the reactions of a long-time (Japanese) Nintendo fan.
Famicom Dojo is a web series dedicated exploring the Japanese history of video games and consoles from the other side of the Pacific.

Vinnk He Will Know The Game as Super Mario USA
@TBustah
@TBustah 6 лет назад
Yeah, working in a game store, he'd recognize the game. He might scratch his head at the title, but he'd recognize it. In fact, given that there are far more functional Famicoms left than Disc Systems, and that the Mario version has also been rereleased in Japan on all of the same platforms that we got it (it's even on the Famicom Classic), I have to wonder if SMUSA is actually the better known version in Japan. Fuji TV owns the characters in YKDDP, and since their license has long since expired, Nintendo has simply opted to release the modified version on SFC, GBA, etc. over the years rather than renewing it.

while he may not have seen the American Famicom before, he instantly recognized "Nintendo" of course as I already mentioned that Nintendo originated in Japan and because it's the most famous company there even now, I am sure most Japanese should be able to still recognize Nintendo's own golden name slapped on our American systems and game carts as well! lmao. XD

I grew up with the Famicom console here in the Philippines(Well, Gameboy was the first). My cousin, who has immigrant relatives in America, owned her very own NES console here in the Philippines(Famicom consoles were alot in the shops here those days than the NES consoles). Do those cartridges have the same cartridge slot size you put in for both consoles? If they do, I would imagine that the NES catridges can be played upon the Famicom console but the Famicom cartridges can't be played on a NES console due to their short cartridge size. The disadvantage of both consoles would be pulling the cartridge out without first switching the power off(you wouldn't want to try that believe me). I haven't experienced it on the NES console though. But one time, my neighbor ignorantly pulled off the cartridge from my Famicom console without first switching the power off just to change games. My Famicom console just broke by having obvious glitches on the TV screen even if different cartridges are put in and the continuous 'blows' to the cartridges were done. I frantically blamed my neighbor for having a Sega console when he broke my Famicom console.
@FamicomDojo

Check out this video we did explaining Famicom and NES cartridge differences: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CHMkwPEuv-o.html The short version is that the Famicom has a 68 pin configuration, and the NES has a different 72 pin configuration, but some NES games are actually just the Famicom board with an NES converter. You would need a similar converter to play NES on Famicom, but those aren’t as common. Thanks for the story!

18:41 Pretty much all of the early, "black box" games are the same as their Famicom counterparts. In fact, I think "Pinball" there in particular was actually one of those games with a converter inside, so it IS exactly the same. So, I just bought the Japanese versions for my AV Famicom, even though I have a 72 to 60 pin converter for it. They're a lot cheaper.
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 7 лет назад
TBustah So far I have found converters in Wrecking Crew, Gyromite, and... I think some third one. The black cart games are the only places you'll find them, but not all of them, and not every title used very many compared to new boards.

@TBustah
@TBustah Год назад
@@JUSXTREME96 Well, yeah, of course you wouldn’t see SMB/Duck Hunt with a converter. They were never released on one cartridge in Japan, and by the time Nintendo started offering the two on one cartridge in the west (in the Action Set, first released in 1988), they wouldn’t have needed to convert Famicom carts anyway because the production issues that necessitated converting existing boards had been solved.

"Nintendo what is this?!" Wow! first time I ever heard someone saying that especially from a Japanese! Goes to show that hardly anyone maybe just a few Japanese people ever seen what the legendary game machine from the 80s they called "Famicom" look like in America! lmao. Dude, you're amazing! I can't believe you traveled all the way to Japan (Im freaking jealous now as I always wanted to go there myself one day lol) just to show your American collection on the other side of the world where Nintendo is better known and legendary famous over there! I never imagine myself what the Japanese thinks of the American console because I thought the Japanese already have a Nintendo and they wouldn't care or even bother to see what our own version of the Famicom look like from our country (the U.S.) again, you done an incredible job going there to show it off. I hope you can do the same for this guy with another console different in U.S.! The Nes had a completely different design probably to avoid confusion over regions at the time or they wanted to design their own Nintendo for the American company to release. Oddly, the same American shape stays within France, England, Australia, and even Germany! However, China and Hong Kong has Famicom there. Possibly Korea has one too as well.

by the way, did you know it's possible to play Japanese Nintendo games on your American system? I only tried it with Gamecube and Super Nintendo but what about the American Nes is that possible? I saw a Game Genie for Nes but wasn't sure if it might play Famicom games since they are both differently designed but it might be more easier if we use the Nes Bone edition of the Nes? The Nes Bone was the 2nd model of the American Nes that was released during the early 90s. The Nes Bone would be the very first machine in American Nintendo where Nes gets a 2nd model but still the same console. The Nes Bone has a much easier design, you don't have to press the cartridge down when you insert it and possibly easier for the Game Genie if Japanese games can go on it if there no plastic tabs which require a tool to cut off the tabs.

My kids would never forgive me if I did. But I hope to pick up another one in the future and gift it to the store.

It's a Sony CRT. A very nice one.

I asked because of the AVGN episode where he reviewed Nintendo accessories, and I just realized I was thinking of the wrong accessory. There's a point where the Nerd says "all because I'm using a flat-screen TV" to explain why the "bullets" scatter all over the place when he's pointing the gun in the same spot. He was talking about the SNES Super Scope when I thought he was discussing the NES Zapper.

I think it has something to do with the language barrier. But his reaction seems underwhelmed at first but to can tell he's definitely intrigued by the nes. I'm surprised that he didn't comment on the fact that you can change the controllers. The famicom hard wired theirs.

The store is actually called "Famicom Dojo" It's been there for 30+ years. I love the place so much that we named our channel and show Famicom Dojo. And don't worry about your English. It's very good.
