Why the Minus World glitch happens, and how to find -2 and -3 on Famicom Disk System

The Minus World is very real! We'll show you how to get there in three easy steps without any hacking or modding.
We should have said "Minus Worlds", because there's not just one; not only is -1 totally different on the Famicom Disk System version, but you can reach two more (-2 and -3) which you have probably never seen before.
Far from being a deliberately-created "secret level", the truth of its existence is actually much stranger. We explain just why the minus world glitch happens... which means there are definitely more out there than the ones you can reach with in-game methods.

By using the walk through everything code in Deluxe, I managed to access the pipe, but it was actually fixed like in All Stars. Conclusion, no minus world in Deluxe.

Justin was a true artist. We just asked for one line reading for a bit appearance, and he gave us this iterative performance where he riffed and ad-lobbed just about everything you see here. He never broke character in between takes. It was so good, we decided to use as much of it as we could.

at 13:58 you can hear the audio gets improved by a lot when it switches footage. This is because the first clip is from a Famicom hooked up using RF and the second clip is from a Nes hooked up using composite video, which provides better video and audio quality

In Europe there were two versions of Super Mario Bros. released. The first is the same ROM as the US and Japanese versions and runs slower on PAL systems. The second was released a few years later and was partially optimised for the PAL region. However, in the process they made a few accidental changes. First, the music runs twice as fast. Second, you can jump slightly higher when running (allowing you to get the powerup at the end of 2-1 from the ground, for example). I wonder if the minus world is different in that version? EDIT: Just tested it. It's the same as the original one.

What they could have done instead for the 1990 PAL re-release was use the MMC1 or MMC3 mapper, that way the frame tracking for music and video are separated. Then the whole BPM issue would have been resolved. I know the PAL release of The Legend of Zelda had the optimized music.

@@ClassicTVMan1981X Thanks, that's very interesting! And yeah, they should have done that. That also explains why most later Nintendo games at least have optimised music, as they used those chips. I believe Zelda 1 is one of those games that's easier in PAL because Link's movement is optimised but that of the enemies is not. I also didn't know that the PAL revision of SMB1 dates from 1990. I was never able to find out when it came out.

I heard that there is also a variant of the Minus World that can be achieved in Versus Super Mario Brothers, which is an altered version of Super Mario Brothers that was made for the arcade platform, Famicom Dojo. The NTSB/USA version of the game, and possibly PAL/International versions of the game, have it so that, rather than getting to the Minus World through the more well known means, including the Game Genie cheats, as well as the in-game glitch that you can exploit, you can somehow get on a brick on the same place as where you go up the pipe to World 1-3, go UNDER said pipe, then jump up and access the Minus World arter going PAST the World 1-3 pipe. However, at least in all of the versions of the arcade game besides the Japanese version, as far as I know, anyway, you end up in a much shorter water level, which is actually the water bonus stages of World 5-2 and World 6-2 from the original Super Mario Brothers, as well as possibly in Versus Super Mario Brothers. There are also the PAL/International versions of Super Mario Brothers as well, including the cartridge that has Super Mario Brothers, Tetris, and Nintendo World Cup (which is actually a reskinned Kunio-Kun sports game) all together, Famicom Dojo.

So, regarding the different versions of SMB you mentioned and their versions of the glitch - apparently, the Lost Levels and VS Super Mario removed the bricks that make the exploit work. Plus, All Night Nippon Super Mario (a Japan Famicom Disk System exclusive) does still have the hit detection glitch, though instead of taking you to World -1, the glitched pipe will instead take you to the end of World 1-2.

Honestly, I didn't even know it could be done by standing and going through the top brick. I always did it with the crouching method. I also always did it with my foot hanging off the edge of the pipe. Seems to work well for me.

The PAL version, PAL 3-in-1, All Night Nippon, Wii U, and Famicom Mini console/NES Classic Console Minus Worlds are the same as in the cartridge version.

its actually world 36-1 bc the empty space is index 36 in the character map with some cheats you could get to other glitch worlds that would show letters (10-34) as the world number, and after that i think it uses tiles/parts of game stages

2022, I'm still playing this. Recently I was trying super Mario on mame emulator and tried to enter -1, but on the mame version doesn't exist that last brick on 1-2, I don't think it's possible to enter -1 world, if you guys try that please make a video. By the way, that last version of the super Mario, remind me super boy for the MSX, don't know if it's the same game, only saw it online, never really tried to play

I think i know why you go back to the start of the level when you enter the pipe. I think it sets the position of mario first to 0,0 ( the start position ) and then it try's to load the next area. But since that doesn't exist on the cartridge it will go to a errorhandler that says to load the level again. So it will reset the level but not the timer. That's what I think happens.

Actually, in Super Mario Bros, every enterable pipe has an object on the same screen that points it to a room or location in the game. The Minus World pipes don't have any set locations since they don't have the pointer objects there. If there's no pointer object, a pipe brings you back to the beginning of the level.

Hitting a flagpole in any of the "working" values often results in Mario just walking, forever, regardless of pole height. Successfully "ending" a level using one of the "working" values often treats you to Mario walking in and out, across, and through the map screen in, what I assume, is him walking the "path" all the way from the "current" level to his destination. PS: I hope you like Replies, Commas, Parenthesis, and Quotes.

In Super Mario deluxe, I'm pretty sure there's still a hit detection error in the L shaped pipe if you jump right before entering the pipe, If you're lucky, you should get into the glitched warp zone.

I readed that you can get out of the minus world water level but that you need to grab all coins and follow the right pattern, you also needed to be big mario or else you || get stuck.

You guys missed one and it is a different minus world. A "Home-brew" version of Super Mario Brothers for the Sega Genesis. It's a direct port from the NES version, but because the hardware is different the colors and sounds are off a little BUT when you go to the minus world it's completely different! It also can be beaten but -2 I believe is infinite. I work at a video game store & we this port, I tested it out for myself so it can be done on the Genesis and you do get a different result.

After 8-4(hereafter referred to as "31") is some stage section with a pipe, then a row of blocks and some red koopas, and another pipe, then then two rows, as if for hammer bros. Then 33 to about 58 are bonus areas and side paths(coin basements, cloud coins, and underwater sections). 59 freezes. 60 and a few later are a mix of freezes and what seems to be You Vs Boo or M Vs L levels. I tried up to 73 and just got freezes.

Famicom Dojo, technically, in the NTSB/USA and PAL/International versions of the game, the coding for the other Minus Worlds are still there in those versions of the game. I do not know about how the PAL/International versions of the game work, but you can try Game Genie or Pro Action Replay codes on the game (but getting the former is a LOT easier than getting the latter) to access the Japanese Minus Worlds in that game. I think there is another level in which you can do the minus world glitch, but the result is the same. However, have you tried the trick with Vs. Super Mario Bros., you know the arcade version? Actually in a future episode, I'd like to hear more about the Vs. machines, Playchoice 10 and more about Nintendo's arcade games. There's lots to say like you can shoot the dog in Vs. Duck Hunt, but there's a rumor that Nintendo doesn't own the codes for arcade versions of Donkey Kong.

Ok, so, the GBC version allocates the word value ahead of time and getting to any of the pipes, regardless of the message, brings you to the proper world. Even setting it up so Mario goes immediately to the pipe and pressing down doesn't do anything. I did however manually change the level value(there doesn't seem to be a "world" value, just a long list of levels),

It's a very different game with different code; the first official sequel to SMB before even the Japanese version of SMB2 came out. This video only dealt with ports of the original SMB code, so bringing it up was kind of a joke to bring the video to a close. As other people have been mentioning, there are arcade versions yet to explore but those were out of scope for this video.

If you go into the second pipe without triggering the "Welcome to warp zone" message, you will go to world 5.

Actually, the Japanese Minus World 1 could be either World 1-3 OR World 5-3, but neither I, nor the both of you, know for sure which one that it is, Famicom Dojo. However, Japanese Minus World 2 is indisputably and undeniably World 7-3 and Japanese Minus World 3 is just an underground version of World 4-4. Finally, you two ARE aware that there is both a Famicom Disk Drive version of the game (which is one of those yellow floppy disk-like things that you have), AND a Famicom Disk System (which is a cartridge that is yellow, a little over half the size of an NES cartridge, and slightly wider than an NES cartridge), am I right? Also, do the same rules for the Famicom Disk Drive version of Super Mario Brothers ALSO apply for the Famicom Disk System version of Super Mario Brothers, yes or no?
