Tunnel Vision (2000) - The closure of a passage way on the 'Norex line' has left members of the seperated Mlambo clan with a 300km trip to visit kin, obtain essential supplies, or simply fetch water.

The so-called Norex line was aimed at keeping out the "communist threat". As a consequence the Mlambo clan, one of the biggest families in the region, was split by the international border. But up until the end of last year there was a "hole in the border". Ironically, Magnus Malan, former defence minister and apartheid's main enforcer, allowed an informal crossing for members of the tribe. Over the years the Mbuzini tunnel became the economic lifeline of the area, as well as an access route. This concession is no more. In a recent effort to stop smuggling, the tunnel was closed. Today an iron curtain separates members of the Mlambo tribe. What used to be a five meter walk is now a 300 kilometre detour to a border post. Some members risk arrest by crossing the fence illegally.

We don't have this problem along the Kenya and Tanzania border. Kenya and Tanzania have a mutual agreement that communities living along the border can cross over upto 10 kilometres inside opposite country without need for permits or visas. Long live the brotherhood of East Africa Community.

I am Kalanga. Our Families, Clans and Nation were broken up, some in Botswana, some in Matebeleland, some in South Africa. The decision to keep Berlin Conference borders was one of the most foolish and cowardly decisions ever made by African leaders.

The corridor where illegal crossing of stolen cars take place even the struggling of unlicensed and illegal firearms.Those who do crime in that area deprive the innocent people to visit their relatives both in Mozambique and South Africa and Swaziland as the corridor is now closed and no longer operating.

This goes far, Matabeleland (Mthwakazi Kingdom) area in southern Zimbabwe is made up of every tribe found in South Africa and Botswana. This was a result of Mfecane at which Mzilikazi moved up north while conquering and inheriting other tribes and eventually settling KwaBulawayo in Zimbabwe. Today the current king of Mthwakazi Kingdom (Matabele people) is King Bulelani Lobengula Khumalo ka Mzilikazi, he is part of the Khumalo clang that remained or is found in South Africa.

In 1875 French President Marshall McMahan drew a line from the confluence of the Usuthu & Pongola Rivers to the sea. He divided the Tembe-Thonga kingdom in half and the are still divided today. He was settling a dispute by arbitration between Kingdoms of Portugal & Great Britain. This artifical border is still know as the McMahan line

So lines drawn in 1884 in Berlin are causing so much harm over a century later to poor villagers. And some suits and uniform tell us there's nothing they can do but enforce the craziness. Wow.

Why divide the clan by a border fence? The fence was supposed to be erected in an area where the clans do not reside or the chiefs doesn't have jurisdiction of

Life moves, it changes, it modernises. There must be control and effective governance of all human activity as ti is with everything else, otherwise we succumb to anarchy. This matter must be considered within this framework. How do we develop inclusively, in an ordered manner while dealing with threats posed by modern criminality and security issues.

It's very sad people of the-same kingdom, speaking the-same local languages, rule by the-same family, divided by colonial boundaries, I think South Africa countries should consult other africa region countries, advice to deal with this like issues. The local people are very poor, not understanding, foreign languagies they impose on them, they need to communicate with brothers and sisters within the boundary to sell their agricultural products. In west africa, people can travel freely within member state for 90 days therefore local people are able to sell agriculture produce freely and inter-ract local people within the share borders. You're saying you need a visa to see a member of the family 5 minute drive within the border, not practicable.

Same as here in South Africa actually as long as you have a passport you can be in any of the SADC countries for 90 days it's just that old people don't have passports

Break up these European borders we've subjected ourselves to so much hardship over. Return traditional borders of African tribes. What is this? This is just several levels of sadness & despair.
@janda5816

Return to traditional borders of hunter-gatherers, who by default do not operate at state-level (that would be “country” to you) so the concept of “borders” is nebulous at best. Brilliant.
