This video should serve to remind us all of the PRIVILEGES we have. Even if we're stressed about our situation or wish our own situations were better, etc., these families and other around the world are the ones that face the real pressure. When your dream is simply that your daughter can have a roof over her head and clean food to eat, that's what tough situation is. Let us be thankful for what we have and make further efforts to enable other people like this to also be able to experience this

At the turn of the 20th century, Argentina was one of the wealthiest country in the world. It was even richer than some Western European countries. Its really sad, what mismanagement, corruption and kleptocracy can do to a country.

Argentinians oligarchs were really wealthy because they exported up to 70% of the nations food at the expense of the citizens hunger but Argentina has never been a wealthy country, even 100 years ago Argentina had slums like “villa desocupación”. Don’t be fooled by shitty gdp per capita graphs, even when Argentina had a similar gdp to Canada more than 50% of the population was illiterate. Having natural resources can pump up those gdp numbers but that doesn’t mean the population wasn’t poor

@@uekvowzkaebbzuvrgipqxhemmwbhe You repeat a false discourse. Not only Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world per capita, and it was for about 70 years, but it was the 2nd world receptor of European immigration from 1890 until the post-World War II. Europeans came to the bottom of the world because it was better to live here. It´s the story of our great-great-grandparents and great-grandparents. They were all able to progress until Peronism (fascist socialism) arrived. After that(1946) the decline began. And Argentina was so rich that it took 70 years to bring it to this situation.

Wow, this has blown my mind. I had no idea that some Agentinanias were in such extreme poverty. As a Brit, I recently learnt just how unpopular we are with most Argentinians, due to the Falklands and its apparent effect (seemingly) on national pride, but if I could do something to fix this, and hopefully build a bridge, I absolutely would. I wish we were allies and not enemies. It's heartbreaking to see this.

Thank you Marc. I share the same feeling as an argentinian and proud son of an ex combatant in the Malvinas/Falklands war. Despite of the history, I do wish we could build bridges and rebuild the friendship between our nations and look forward. But our populist cleptocracy of politicians (and majority of our uneducated people) don´t share this view so I´m not too optimistic in the short term. It´s sad and depressing really. My wife is from BA, Belgrano specifically and she also received an excellent, free education. That is one thing Argentines can rightly be proud of. Ive visited many times, the country is a contradiction of the highest order but sadly a lot of the blame goes to the political class but also to a certain apathy or maybe fatalism amongst the people. My mother in law says they would have been better off if the English rather than the Spanish had prevailed.

@@MrTomyCJ That's not true. The standard of life of wealthy nations is sustained through slave labor and miserable salaries on poorer countries that manufacture their goods and provide them services for bread crums. Meanwhile wealthy nations use their power and leverage to make the poorer countries even poorer so they can increase their margins of profit. USA is the world's greatest culprit of this, but its not the only one. On the other hand this also wrecks local communities and cities in wealthy countries as the big companies move offshore to reduce costs, causing massive unemployment and obliterating the locations that allowed them to grow. Detroit is the textbook example of this. Democracy and stock-trading capitalism have failed and now the human system is going to implode. I had to leave South America, it took me almost 15 years working in black, getting exploited, living on the streets even in Europe and eating from the trash to survive. Now after spending most of my young life in that life, i have my own place a good job in the mountains of Norway, but I haven't seen my falimy in years, only 2 times on those 15 years and I miss them so much (i want to go back every day i wake up). It’s not just landfills that get picked over. In Buenos Aires there are dumpster/skip sized trash containers in the street and throughout the day, there is a steady stream of people who rummage around in them. There are government programs and NGOs that collect these animals, care for them and castrate them. But what the government and these NGOs do is still little, because the amount of animals on the streets is absurd! I have already been very sad about this, but I have no way of welcoming the pets into my house, I have 1 dog and a cat and I take very good care of them what I can do for stray animals is to put water and food when I see one, so whenever i can i do it.

Anyway, I hope Messi --- among the highest paid athletes in the world --- could donate 1/2 of 1% of his monthly income toward a few villages like this, so in each village, 50 kids could eat at least two good meals a day and get to play balls in the field... He can't do it alone, even if he spent all his money on the situation, as it is much larger than what one man could do; but certainly the monthly income he gets from Europe and the world, of commercial interests who sell his name and fame... he could do more than most humans, FOR his own Argentinian countrymen in these hours of great struggle. I have seen a few refugees from my own country, of Laos --- from where Sunisa Lee, the 2020 Tokyo All Around Olympic Gymnastic Gold Medalist parents came --- being settled in Argentina, in the late 1970s to mid 80s... and being given help, when Argentina was still a developing, prosperous country... Edit: SOME THINGS THEY GOT WRONG. Kukas is not a term used to describe these people, we don't use it to describe poor people, we use it to describe people whom are loyal to the Kirchnerist party. The lockdown only accelerated things, but for over twenty years the Kirchnerist party has made it clear it does not want poor people to progress, they have twisted our welfare system from an aid to those less fortunate to get back in their feet, to a twisted dependency network where loyal designated individuals called punteros force them into voting for them under threat of being cut off from the little money they receive. The Ukrainian invasion is NOT the main cause of our inflation, terrible administration by the governments to perpetuate themselves in power via the use of the welfare network to undermine democracy has led them to increase public spending to astronomical levels which I'd financed by ridiculous monetary emission. We know we have to cut spending, but the people in power are bunkered in Buenos Aires surrounded by loyalists and they can do as much as they want as long as the people is kept prisoner of this corrupted welfare system. The worst part is that most of them do need these aids, to use then to gain votes through extortion is infuriating. Twenty years late BBC friends, this has been a constant for twenty years

I remember not having my refuse picked up for quite some time so we got some workers to pack the van when I got to the dump site about 5 kids ran after the van I started speeding but those kids were fast a few managed to jump in the vehicle while it was moving our beggers and vendors sometimes insist on helping you for a fee I had my assistants and carried no money when we got to the land fill more teens had gathered around the vehicle they started offloading the rubbish out of the bins without asking for donations we had a mixture of disposed food which was stale and rancid those teens separated the food by smelling it and ate the food they felt was edible I regretted my speeding they were the most humble and kindest kids who salvaged the food trucks that threw away food we left the landfill and watched those kids eating with appreciation that distasteful food they cleaned and loaded our bins without demanding a penny I remember thinking to my self how ungrateful I was.

This is a story in Argentina, but digging through trash for food happens even in the United States. It’s a tragedy the inequality that persists in this world

why are you trying to deflect the severity of what’s happening in Argentina ? One third of the population is in poverty!! The US numbers is no were close to that . Also in the US people get food aid (foodstamps) so they have full fridges and not look for food in garbage . so sad it’s like subsaharan levels of poverty.

@@sumerianking4942 I'm not deflecting, I'm pointing out that this situation is not unique to Argentina, not by a long shot. It's international, even in the wealthiest of countries I'm wondering if you are as passionate about Argentinian poverty as the 'subsaharan' levels. If not, leave me be please

All of those countries are far from being developed, in Chile 40% of workers earn less than 400 dollars a month, In Argentina 60% of children live in abject poverty and experience hunger everyday plus because of the high inflation essential goods such as toilet paper are scarce in Argentina, 250.000 Argentinas work in landfills recycling trash and making less than 1 dollar a day they are known as “cartoneros”
@mattllaves
@mattllaves 2 года назад
@@uekvowzkaebbzuvrgipqxhemmwbhe i don't want to downplay this issue, but 250k out of 45 million doesn't paint the whole picture, and you can also do a lot more with 400 dollars in SA than in north america or europe. These countries are definetely not developed, but they are also not far from it like my country, Brazil or a African country.
@uekvowzkaebbzuvrgipqxhemmwbhe
@uekvowzkaebbzuvrgipqxhemmwbhe 2 года назад
@@mattllaves at least 250.000 people survive by digging food in the trash that’s a lot of people eating from these landfills and making less than 1 dollar a day. And it’s not like the 44.750.000 other Argentinians are any better for instance 50% of the population is below the poverty line and 60% of children experience hunger, the average income of those 45 million Argentina is just 150 dollars a month, inflation is close to 90% and there are a lot of basic products missing from the shelves. Last week in San Juan Argentina thousands of people looted a supermarket because they have nothing to eat, the situation is pretty bad and comparable to African countries or even Sri Lanka, you are indeed downplaying the severity of Argentina situation. As for Chile, Uruguay Panama, Ecuador etc. Those are small countries with little to no industrial capacity and no farming land so the salaries there are higher, in terms of dollars, because they have to import everything, so 400 dollars buying a lot in SA only applies to big countries that have lots of national products that are cheaper not for small countries that import a lot of food energy gas etc. 400 dollars may be ok in Argentina but definitely not in Chile or Uruguay or other countries where 400 is close to the minimum wage

What needs more exposure outside of LATAM are the fundamental causes for its poverty: excesive economic restrictions coupled with excesive public spending. Leading to public deficit and corruption. And the fundamental driver for economic restrictions and excesive public spending is the collectivist, often anti-capitalist ideology. That way, the general public of other regions can finally understand what NOT to do in order to avoid ending up like us.
