i'm watching this because i don't like the way the internet culture and video games has taken over my life. back then tv, games and viral videos didnt exist.
The 1950s has it's pros and cons. Yes, the family morals and values were good (in my opinion) the family ate together, prayed together, mostly stayed together. However, the racism, class issues and the way women were thought to be just a housewife was kinda backward. Someone mentioned the way women dressed back then compared to how they do now and I agree, I believe that women back then were modest and that's something we need back in our society. The same with men, I don't think it's cool for
Please dump the annoying music sound track. It doesn't have any connection with the movie, or the voice soundtrack. The stops and starts between sections is also awkward and distracting.
Btw, I'm not knocking being a housewife cuz we know it's a job within itself. To have cook, clean, make sure your family is happy is a tough ass job, but they failed to realize that women were what kept the boys afloat during WWII
The Music....It most be a cultural thing. Nostalgia exists from different points of view. And some simply can't understand. Unless you do and just don't want to.
I grew up in the '50s. This film and these actors are totally alien to me. This was not the world I grew up in. It's more like a tv family (Ozzie and Harriet).
Really? I just heard from some ignorant moron that TODAY is the best time for life in America... even though, no one trusts their neighbors enough to trade butter or whatever. This was a time when neighbors were always getting together and becoming friends, even in the militant areas.
Marley Johnson This is an interesting theory. But, it's like when TV came into the picture, everyone gave up using their imaginations for entertainment and started using it to change or should I say, terminally screw up society itself. Kids were a lot healthier in body and soul when all they could do was listen to The Lone Ranger on their radio.
It wasn't better? Was it better to abort children, send the kids to daycare because mom became "liberated", and was it better to put 1/4 of the population on food stamps because they are too lazy to go to work..oh yes they were truly homophobic I forgot. They didn't want men going into women's rooms. I must be old fashioned.
This video was absolutely awesome, besides the music, vintage music would have been the choice! I wish I was born in the vintage era like my wife says "you were born in the wrong generation!!" When family values were priority not iPhones/technology.........can you live in the amazon???...???
+manuelmach86 I've always felt I was born in the wrong generation too. Never got into the sixties free love do whatever feels good drop out and get high generation. I would have loved this era. Instead me and others got stuck with Rockefeller Institute social experiments like women's lib and bra burning. Just an awful time.
i work in a grocery store in produce full time i was talking to a guy this all started about me telling him how you eat brussel sprouts and he said well sonny back then i took bets to eat these for a quarter back then a quarter was worth alot so long story short he told me he felt sorry for the young generation growing up in todays world kids back then were safer and life was more simple stress free he told me i would love growing up in the 50s
I find it amazing that because of the segregation back then, that some people discredit and demonize everything about the time period, as if a strong traditional family unit and patriotism would inevitably lead to hatred and discrimination.
No body understands how much i wanted to have been born in the 50's the amount of respect we have lost since then is unbelievable men are arrogant women are are a Buddle of gloom and children well you cant control them yes they are young and wild but no need for misbehaving for there parents and adults around them show some respect I'm only 13 and i believe we all need to look back on how things used to be and make them that way again you do have to change yourself your personality just change the way you look at society we only have one world don't destroy it make it your own xx
Kara Pattison You have no clue what was going on in the 1950s. What you just described as "the world now" is exactly like it was in the 1950s, even worse! Men were the only ones with entitlement. Women, deemed unsuited for the big work world were saddled at home to raise the kids, cook, clean, and be an obedient wife to her "man". Teenagers were being bombarded with war propaganda and bomb tests and were being fed all of the fears of the world through various sources of media, ultimately plummeting them into the lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Families were terrified that they would be labeled as communists and blacklisted, suddenly and mysteriously "disappearing" off of the face of the Earth.Gays were labeled as pedophiles and ridiculed by the world. The 1950's were a time of racism, sexism, war and international conflict. The only innocence found in the 1950's were those of the children. You love the idea of the 1950's, chasing down the American Dream, the nostalgia, but you have no clue how much darkness was involved in those times. Just look up Sputnik, Ike, McCarthyism, and Communism in the 1950s and see just how much you do not know about those troubled times.
@martyseamusmcfly I do agree with you. Other than the obvious dreadful racial and sexual inequalities... the 1950s was a good time in the USA, Low unemployment, One parent could make enough money to support a family, good work benefits, low crime rate, low teen pregnancy rate, better political leaders, safer streets, a booming economy
the physical constitution of the individual should never limit his or her social mobility. You are right... most men are more psychically endowed than women (thanks for the "news flash"), but the women's mental capacities are equal..and in a civilized progressive world its your mind what matters not the body.
For women it was a better place since they took on the role of the women taking care of the family. Why do you think men have muscles (for work), and women have breasts (for child feeding)? Obviously men and women are designed for different societal roles. Yes, there are exceptions, but generally speaking women are to be a housewife, and men are to be working to make money. But this had to change due to inflation, making harder to survive on one wage.
Man people today are missing this type of living standards. This is what truly defines an "American Dream". But, you guys need to remember that nothing can beat this decades standard, not even today or dear lord, the future. God Bless 50's America.
Don't be so easily fooled. The picture we get from the fifties is what they wanted us to see, in films like this. There was plenty of poverty to go around, and there was rape and domestic violence and child abuse. I'm not trying to depress you, and I'm sure some families were like this, but then again, there are families like this today. People look back on the fifties seeing quaint middle-class white suburbs and corny horror film posters. The reality was a time not dissimilar from the 1920s, when all anyone ever wanted to do was forget about war and pretend there were no problems in the world.
Jack Hoff You sound so sure of yourself. Urban poverty is minuscule? Rape was barely noticed? Well, that might be right due to the ignorance towards sexual violence in the decade, but I can guarantee it was not minuscule or barely noticed by the victim. What you are watching now is an ideal, middle-class lifestyle. You have to remember, there are many more working class people than middle class, and the fifties did not erase that. Don't tell me it was a perfect decade when you had planes flying over Europe with hydrogen bombs should any two leaders get in a fight.
That's the political spectrum you mean. You over generalize things too much and seem to focus on the negative aspects rather than the pros. We're talking about the daily average american living in the 50s...
Jack Hoff I'm talking about the class system, not the political spectrum, and it's vitally important to how you see the 1950s. I must emphasise; the family shown in this is middle-class. The majority of people are the working class, who wouldn't have luxuries like gas fridges or ovens and all the rest. And I cannot believe you tell me that I generalise things too much when I'm arguing with a person who said, and I quote; "The 1950s was the perfect decade to live in." Please stop being offended, and take a step back from the conversation and realise what we're talking about. I'm not insulting your favourite song or author. What I'm trying to get you to understand is that most people in the 1950s wouldn't have lived like in this picture. It was a very conservative time, for sure, but there's no such things as '20th century people' and '1950s people'. We're all of the same species, and we do the same terrible things, as specified above by me. But we also do very good things. Please, tell me some pros that the 1950s had over today. I don't disagree that there are definite pros, BIG ONES, but you seem to have a picture in the 1950s of Grease or Hairspray, or this video above.
Anyone who is not Born-Again will not agree with me; but it was not music that destroyed the family unit (although it was a "symptom"). It was the removing of the Holy Bible and prayer from our schools in the early sixties, that not only destroyed the family unit, but the very souls of people, in general, and consequently our nation, as a whole! How terribly tragic!
It was less demanding, stressful and more simple/lower cost of living. Now we have more entertainment, technology and people are more liberal/less innocent and more educated.
When we took the Lord out of our society we all failed. Slowly and surely. The America we live in now is an empty shell of despair. Our education, health system, economic outlook and youth are all in shambles. We were on the right track some 45 years ago. Sad to watch it all fade away.
@Star16 I'm guessing your a woman, and I bet you appreciate the freedom and the opportunities you have, during the 50's a lot of your rights are strained, you would have to get married and rely on a man to live a half comfortable life. However I think that people had more respect for each other during the 50's.
I think people, man and woman should have no expectations placed on them for creating family, and shouldnt be limited to these roles. no wonder women are mad at guys when there is opinions like yours. saying a woman is best suited for her reproduction capabilities is offensive and caveman mentality
Dude, women love male dominance. Any non-feminist women will tell you that. Even if she doesn't tell you that, it's still true. It's a biological factor that you can either ignorantly ignore or wisely accept.
the "lonely" nerd is either some future brillant NASA engineer that will change forever technological progress in space travel, or a complex mind mathmatician that will lead a team at IBM. Of course could also turn into a lone shooter that after having been drafted later to serve in vietnam comes back a wack job and wears camo all the time talks of consipracy and then goes on a shooting spree... ya just never know with the "lonely" nerds.
According to the bible, God's words, women are to be dominated by the male, but of course abused to a certain point, she should have been allowed for a divorce, but wife abuse is more common today. A women is to be a housewife. Many consequences arose b/c women deviated from their roles. 4 ex., the lack of good parenting, mother watch, home cooked whole foods, and deterioration of the family. Why do you think men are genetically more muscular, and women grow boobs?
So frank shows up half hour late.. as he was told by his boss to work harder or more or finish that project up. Finds out that 2 of his equals at work have been laid off and there is a recession going on (lots of people don't know that there as a recession in 1957 too!) His mortage is behind..and this is only Tuesday... yeah the guy is tired ok?? Compared to no boss and work at your pace at home with cleaning and laundry..yeah.. no comparison.
LOL dinner with family.. folks yelling at each other.. no one paying attention to each other but cell phones and Ipods. These days are LONG behind.. even if things were to get BAD and shrink those things in our lives.. no one is going to be sitting around a table asking how little tommy enjoyed school today or what mom got for sale at the market. Too bad that a few things are gone but same time more freedom and expression now then at that time.
@LittlePinky82 the difference between the 1950s and now is quite different.......NOW: skyrocketing teen pregnancy, skyrocketing illegal drug use, colapsed economy, terrorism, high unemployment, high crime rate......etc
@Star16 Again I think my morals are far more updated and balanced than anyone from the 50's, if you took out the segregation and Utopia you would also have the cold war to contend with, not to mention that as a culture, both America and Britain were very bored and frustrated, it was a military based culture, with generals as leading celebs, thats were a lot of smart attire and organisational values came from, but to say its a utopia is an over statement in my honest opinion.
The one boys name was Rod Hunter and his friend Ben was at the table, I wonder if Ben's last name was Dover, Ben Dover. Does this sound like characters from a Gay Porno or what? LOL That name cracked me up. Nice video, true in a lot of ways, but it doesn't show the social unjust that anyone who wasn't white suffered.
