Thank you Dr. Marie! I am going to start FM residency this summer. Could you please make a video and share your perspectives on what interns should and can do starting their first year if they know they want to do hospital medicine in metropolitan area after graduation? I heard that hospitals in metropolitan areas tend to prefer IM trained physicians, but is there anything FM trained physicians can do to boost their CV?
@dr.lindsaymarie
@dr.lindsaymarie 3 года назад
Hi and thanks for the question! I think the best thing you can do to prepare for hospital work as a FM resident is to get more experience. This would include moonlighting on shifts in the hospital if your residency allows that. I also recommend taking an elective(s) in ICU medicine and ask to learn procedures like central lines. Become close with the hospitalists in your residency and they can connect you to jobs after graduation! I’ve met so many nice docs along the way. It’s all about connections so don’t let the bias for IM residents scare you away from pursuing hospitalist work. Hope that helps. :)

Hi! Thanks so much for this video! It's very helpful. I am in med school considering family medicine. You mentioned here that FMs can work as hospitalist. I would like to do some hospitalist work, either full-time or part-time. I def like the hospital, but I have heard that it is usually very hard for family med physicians to find jobs as hospitalists because they usually give those jobs to internists. Is this true? How hard is it for a family med doc to work in a hospital?
@dr.lindsaymarie
@dr.lindsaymarie 3 года назад
Hi, great question. There may be some bias to hire IM for certain hospital groups. I believe it all depends on the area. I know residents I graduated with had no trouble getting hospitalist jobs. Also, you are more likely guaranteed a hospitalist position at the hospital you do your residency at since they know you there. (Of course as long as you are not a terrible resident with poor work ethic.) If you get some experience as a hospitalist at your residency hospital first, you should have no trouble finding other hospitalist positions in the future. Be sure you are asking these questions when you apply for your residency and pick one with strong hospital training. It makes all the difference. Good luck!

Urgent care enabled you to pay off your medical school loans in only 2 years!? Did you work throughout medical school or obtain scholarships?
@dr.lindsaymarie

I did not have any scholarships. My loans were $200,000. I put my entire paycheck except for my living expenses toward my loan every two weeks and that’s how I was able to pay it off. I made another video on the process of that if you want to check it out on my channel ☺️

@dr.lindsaymarie

In family medicine you can see pediatric patients or psychiatry patients, but if you want to only see those types of patients then you would want to complete a pediatric residency, or a psychiatry residency. 😊

@ShesJustLivin
@ShesJustLivin 3 года назад
@@dr.lindsaymarie could you provide more insight on this? I thought it was just urgent care. So in the case of working in the ER would there need to be a fellowship completed? Also is this just for standalone ERs or ERs attached to hospitals?
@dr.lindsaymarie
@dr.lindsaymarie 3 года назад
@@ShesJustLivin Hi, great questions! Since I did not go this route I don’t know all the details but I believe there are multiple options. There is a one year EM fellowship you can do after a FM residency. Also I have heard of some people in FM moonlighting in an ER and getting in that way. Another route would be to work in a rural setting where ER doctors are much needed and they will hire you on as a FM doctor. It all just depends on the location but check in your area if you are interested what rules each hospital has. Good luck! Check out this forum as well: :) forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/fm-to-er.1127306/

@@dr.lindsaymarie Thanks! Oh yeah, I deleted it because I realized my comment wasn't helpful! Originally I just wanted to mention that it's possible to support yourself as a Christian medical missionary without needing to rely on donations (e.g. locums prn), but then I saw you already knew all this (and more) because you made a video about different jobs FPs can get. Which, by the way, thanks for your helpful video. (I only recently came across your RU-vid channel so I wasn't familiar with your content, but I'll subscribe to your channel now because I appreciate your work.) So after I realized you already knew all this, I also realized there was no need for my comment. In any case, I do sincerely wish all the best and I hope you are able to become a Christian medical missionary and spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others for their good and God's glory! God willing, I've also thought about doing medical missions someday too.

@@stevehawke9819 no problem, thank you for the response! Ha, yes I have been blessed to do medical missions since 2007, then since 2015 I have been engaging in more non medical missions, and would love to do it long term but also still use my medical education and expertise. It’s been a fine balance and sadly there are a lot of travel restrictions now a days so I am doing what I can. That’s exciting you like missions as well! Do you also work in the medical field?

@@dr.lindsaymarie Thanks again, Lindsay Marie! I think what's good about FM is you have so many options to do so many different things (e.g. outpatient/PCP, inpatient/hospitalist/open ICU, urgent care, nursing home). Primary care seems super hot right now. Yeah, I'm in med too (although I'm older as a non-trad), but not FM. However I sometimes wish I had picked FM! It's a great specialty.
