This comes so early in the video that I think it is worth the effort to drop the correct audio over. This took me out of the video immediately. If I hadn't been in this mood I would have clicked away and left. You must be losing views due to this.
*Since season 5 They butchered the Dorne arc, messed up sansa's plot, eradicated Tyrion's character development by erasing his motivation of killing all those who wronged him his whole life. Let's not forget young griff being brushed off and not being included in the story. Varys dissappeared and stopped being useful and tyrion followed him into that pit of idiocy and they both became empty puppets, only being shadows of the great characters they once were. And that's to name a few but one last crime they commited was the murder of common sense and logic in the series like arya surviving multiple stabs and sansa defending littlefinger because "sHe dOeSn'T tRuSt tHe lOrDs oF tHe vAlE" who grew up with her father and who respect the starks.
Oh I would suggest said rivalry between D&D and good writing actually began a few seasons earlier than the final season. I think around the 6th Season they decided that shit writing was the direction they wanted to go and well, that's indeed what they did. So yop, there's that...
I kind of agree. Though I don't know if they have the stomach for that. I don't put it above G.R.R. Martin though since that is pretty much what Tywin did.
@@MrMarinus18 well starks did kill off their whole cadet branch family plus tape od three sisters i think ned wouldnt have stomach for that because of his fostering in vale
Roose feared Ned's father, Lord Rickard Stark. Lord Rickard forbade the Boltons to flay their enemies and/or the smallfolk in the North, he also forbade his Lords from exercising "The right of the first night". Roose Bolton practiced the "right if the first night" this is very clear in the books and it is more than likely that he flayed people from time to time. However he always made sure that the people living on his lands would be so scared of him that they would never run to the Warden of the North and rat him out. He did the same when Ned become the Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell after his father and older brother were killed. And Ned never trusted Roose it is even stated in the books. Robb however was an idiot who forgot that the Boltons fought wars against Starks for thousands of years and that they even flayed several Stark princes in the past, yet he trusted Roose Bolton enough to appoint him as one of his main war generals and he even gave him command of the majority of the Northern forces when he ( Robb ) came up with the plan to send most of his forces to distract Tywin Lannister and his host while Robb and the remaining Northern forces and the Freys defeated Jaime ( because Robb came up with a plan to trick Jaime into following a small host led by Blackfish who were harassing the Lannister forces in order to piss off Jaime so Jaime followed them with only a fraction of his host ). Point being, Roose used this as an opportunity to send Stark men and Stark loyalist to the front lines to be destroyed by Tywin and his host and by doing this he effectively weakened House Stark and it's military power.
@@MrDarkkamui Well Roose stayed under the radar after Rickard and just bided his time until he was given the chance by Tywin and Jaime. But as far as Robb knew (when he marched south) Roose was loyal to them since he fought with Ned in two wars and answered the Robb’s call.
I love the dark parallels between the Starks and the Boltons. They have so much duality and contrast between them that’s great to see. Ned Stark loved Jon Snow unconditionally and was treated no different than any of his other children. Roose however made Ramsay have to EARN being his son and always reminded him that he was a bastard and it wasn’t his house. Jon in a naive state of mind always inquired who is mother was from early on while Ramsay never cared to ask as the answer was very self explanatory as he had a pretty through understanding of who his father was and how the world worked from a young age. He knew damn well the question of who is mother was wasn’t an important or significant inquiry in the slightest. People follow Jon Snow out of love and the reward of freedom. People follow Ramsay out of fear and reward of breathing a little longer. The Battle of the Bastards. The two ideologies, two polar opposites, so different but so similar collide.
Ramsay was a complete monster that made Roose blush and Roose knew it, he didn't want him around. Only after Ramsay killed his heir did he begrudgingly make Ramsay his son and heir.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 How is Ramsay a mirror image of Ned Stark, exactly? He’s nothing like Ned Stark, whether honor is included in the comparison or not. I’m not sure which books you read…
Ramsay was a sadist and a psychopath, that's the fact, but he has a large brain and had a knack of strategies and tactics to compensate that. He beat his enemies by using unconventional tactics, like against Ironborn stragglers, Stannis the Mannis, and even nearly beaten Jon Snow and the Wildlings, had the Knights of the Vale arrive too late.
Bolton brutality does not surprise me: i don't think they are just savages, but instead that they try to compensate they inferior forces with fear, trying to scare people from joining the Starks, more or less like terrorism.
Yggdrasil yeah and its probably true, GRRM has another story where some wargs are skinned by their enemies and worn as cloaks for that very reason. They see them as animals. And seeing as Jon, Robb, Arya, Rickon and Bran can all skin change with dire wolves its not crazy to believe that back then when there were more direwolves this was a much more common practice and the Boltons knew about it
Perhaps the Stark Kings of Winter were the aggressors. The tactics of the Bolton Red Kings of the Dreadfort had to compensate for inferior numbers originally. Then, over time, they gathered enough strength to nearly match the Starks. Even "Our Blades Are Sharp" connotes defensiveness. Like a cornered animal baring its fangs.
Lannister with everyone right? haha but I think this video is about longer problems, and the fight with the Lannister against this houses is not that long. Martell and Targaryen after Roberts Rebellion and the Baratheon and starks only since the war of five Kings.
Sebastian Reyes the martells still hate the lannisters in the books and daenerys know about ellia children ( her nieces ) and the sack of king landing .
House Mormont, and House Greyjoy are notable. Since those two houses fought bitterly over Bear Island, during each of the many conflicts between the Iron Islands, and The North.
House Tyrell is only rivals with about every other great house in the reach. They're all pissed that Aegon I made the Tyrells wardens of the south and not one of them. The Tyrells were the stewards of the Gardener Kings, not as ancient and noble as the rest of them.
Kevin Warburton Because they control Highgarden with all its incomes, and I'm pretty sure they tax their vassals. But before Aegon I came, they were stewards to the Gardeners (like the Cassels to the Starks) and the other reach houses already were where they are today.
Kevin Warburton I doubt that the Tyrells, even as Lords of Highgarden are the richest in the Reach. That distinction should be given to House Hightower who were described in the books as "As rich as the Lannisters". It should be noted that even the Tyrells cannot control the Hightowers should they decide to move or exert their power. This can be said during the Dance of the Dragons when even the House Tyrell can't put a leash on the Hightowers who they described as their "Overmighty vassals". If Reach was France during midieval times and the Tyrells were the Valois kings of France, then the Hightowers are the Dukes of Burgundy, vassals they might be but they are far richer and more powerful than the King of France himself.
@@alejosantacruz7 She's was actually born as Lady Olenna Redwyne. House Redwyne is arguably the 3rd most powerful house in the Reach, just after the Hightowers and Tyrells. The Redwynes owns the largest naval fleet fleet in Westeros, with Lord Redwyne owning 200 warships and 1000 merchant ships. They are also very rich due to their monopoly of the expensive Red and Gold Arbor Wine.
Its actually a dumb assumption, there is a lot of similarity and I am aware of it but it also links to wars in the balkans. Balkans, Turks, Greeks, Bulgars have been playing game of thrones till this day
The Boltons didn't also flay Starks, they specifically flayed Starks. Probably because Starks were skinchangers, leading the Boltons to see them as more animal then man. Which GRRM has written about before, I think the story is called 'the skintrade'.
How about the Red Apple Fossoways of Ciderhall and Green Apple Fossoways of New Barrel. They were separated in two different houses because of Steffon's and Raymun's dispute during Ser Duncan's Trial of Seven.
It's pretty neat how during the first blackfyre rebellion a lot of these rival houses sided with the rebels like the brackens, reynes, and the yronwoods
I would think the Targaryen and Martell rivalry would be one for the ages as well. Aegon the conqueror lost his favorite wife to Dorne, before that the Martell matriarch pretty much spit in Raenys' face, they had 3 Dornish wars because the 'Kings' of Dorne, the Martells, wouldn't bend the knee. The only way they were brought into the 7 kingdoms is with an alliance marriage.
There is also the rivalry between the Florent of Brightwater and the Tyrell of Highgarden, the first who ended align themselves with Stannis Baratheon after Renly’s death, while their overlord Mace Tyrell decided a alliance with the Lannister, and the Florents claim that they are the legit successors of house Gardener
Don't know if it's technically a 'rivalry' but what about the Umbers and the Glovers? In season 1 Rob says: Lord Glover will lead the vanguard; to wit big John Umber retorts: I will march my army home before I march behind a Glover. Always found that interesting as to why he said that thought you guys might too
The Glovers are not lords, but masters. They are like landed knights of the north, because the north doesn't have knights. So i think that the greatjon wanted to march in the front because of prestige and not because they dont like Glovers or something.
@@maplepinguin9333 But if the Glovers are not Lords why does Sansa say on season 7 "have you forgotten your oath my lord" If they were masters they would not be addressed as my lord
@@StubbornBullet Well you are comparing Show Season 2 with Show season 6. After season 4 the serie has gone off the books and are now a whole thing on its own. I think D&D didnt even know the Glovers weren't lords, so I think its simply an error in the show. The show is nowadays know for its errors.
Nick Salmon I’m super late but this was a show only thing. There’s no bad blood between the houses in the books. Umber was just irritated about marching behind houses he viewed as lesser.
House Tyrell and House Florent. When Aegon eradicated House Gardener he appointed Highgarden's steward, Harlen Tyrell, and his family (House Tyrell) as new Lord Paramounts of the Reach. The main issue is that the Florents think they have a better claim to Highgarden because they descent from House Gardener's paternal line, while the Tyrells only descent from Gardener's maternal line. You could also see this rivalry when Tyrell decided to support Renly, and Florent supported Stannis.
House Stark vs House Bolton is like House Atreides vs House Harkonnen. Even the Houses have similar characteristics. House Stark and House Atreides are seen as being noble while House Bolton and House Harkonnen are sadistic especially towards theirs subjects and enemies.
@@MM-xm5vx Sort of, earlier Starks were more prone to brutality than the likes of Ned Stark, however they always did this from a place of honor and because they knew that it had to be done.
Bjarke Johannsen not only that, during the first or second dornish war, the Martells killed a Tyrell lord by dropping i think a thousand red scorpions on him in bed
Ned The Tyrells got REALLY REALLY lucky. They were just stewards who surrendered Highgarden to the Targaryens and got named overlords of the Reach. I am not surprised that previously more prominent families like the Florents and Hightowers are jealous of them.
Lannister vs Martell Frey vs Tully (thought I’m pretty sure that’s more of a misunderstanding) Tyrell vs Martell Tyrell vs Florent and basically every other breath house in the reach
Such a great video and so interesting. You really did some research and it all came together so well, especially with the art and illustrations. Some of this info is in my book of The World of Ice and Fire, but breaking it down to explain all the many rivalries and how they came about was what made this video so iconic. In the TV show it was never really talked about, not in this great of detail, if mentioned at all. So please keep doing these kinds of videos. I’m sure it takes a lot of time to do one of these, so we will forgive you if you don’t put out one like this every other day (lol) Just call me a big fan and I will always be grateful for what you can give us. Thanks so much!! ❤️👍
You are one of the few youtubers i really turn my adblocker off for. You are worth supporting for making such great content and i hope others will support you as well, in anyway they can! Take care and keep up the good work
So why do people see the targaryens as entitled assholes who wrongfully conquered the seven kingdoms, when the starks and martells literally did the same thing, killing other kings and driving houses out of their homes through conquest and yet their seen as heroes to everyone in my opinion their just as bad as the Targaryens if the Targaryens are considered to be wrong for conquering Westeros.
The Northerners, Valemen, Ironborn, Westerners, Stormlanders, Reachmen, and Dornishmen saw Aegon and House Targaryen as a foreign invader, a conqueror. The Riverlords saw The Targaryens as liberators. They've been conquered by The Andals, The Stormkings, and The Ironborn. The Ironborn enslaved The Riverlords and they got as far as The Blackwater Rush. Aegon flew in and The Riverlords rallied to his banner before what happened at Harrenhal. The leader of The Riverlords were The Tullys and they became Lord Paramount of The Trident for their loyalty and built Riverrun.
Well strictly speaking - the first men were indigenous to westeros and were invaded by the andals who conquered the south, then westeros was invaded by the rhoynar who conquered the very south, then westeros was invaded by the targaryens who conquered everything BUT the very south which only joined later in a marriage alliance. This parallels the real life inspiration of Britain. Celtic peoples were there first who were invaded by romans, then saxons, then vikings, then normans.
The Tyrells of the Reach and the Florents of Brightwater keep have a feud with each other too. The Florents says that the Reach shoud have been given to them when Aegon the Conqueror got the Seven Kingdoms, because they have a stronger claim by having a better ancestry to the then ruling house of the Reach, house Gardener, compared to the Tyrells. In the war of the five kings, the Florents fought for Stannis instead of Renly, claimant to the Iron Throne that their liege lords, the Tyrells, sided with. The Florents even lost their castle of Brightwater keep by doing so, being given to Mace Tyrell's second son Garlan Tyrell.
Hey bro, you should make a video on Jon Snow’s Kings Guards. When Jon was a baby, ser Arthur Dayne, Gerold and oswell fought Ned and his men to Protect Jon, they were obviously ordered by Raegar but they all knew that the (King)s Aerys and Raeghar died. So because they knew that, it must mean that they were serving as Kings guard for baby Jon Snow, the heir to the throne. I find it really cool how Jon Snow sort of had his own Kings guards when he was just a baby. Maybe he might appoint his own Kings guards one day if he outlives the war against the White walkers. I know that he has already bent the knee to Daenerys but who knows, if they manage to survive the Nights kings army and become rulers of Westeros together then I wonder whom they will pick as their kings/queensguard. What do think? If hypothetically Jon and Danny were to appoint kings guard whom would they choose? I suspect brienne of tarth and possibly a brother of the nights watch and maybe greyworm, or even Daario Naharis maybe..?
Gotenks - Starboy technically they were still the kings guard of aerys, since he is the one who they see as king. And they are sworn to life to protect mainly the king but also the royal family. So no they weren't serving as jon's kings guard they're just there to protect him
Zhi xci Well, both Aerys and Rhaegar was dead at the time Ned Stark came to the Tower of Joy. Only Viserys and Jon are the male Targaryens left, which I believe makes Jon king, which means they are his Kingsguard.
Valle Paule jon was never crowned.. so again technically he wasnt king. The reason they are there is because they swore an oath to protect the king and the royal family. And most of them were good friends with rhaegar.. but if you want to think they're jon's kingsguard sure why not. The only thing im pointing out is it is wrong because jon was not a crowned king at the time
Zhi xci He was and still is technically the highest Living Targaryen. They sworn to protect their king. And at that point Jon was the king for them. And they wanted to protect the Child of a good friend.
This list is missing the rivalry of Houses Mandarlys and Peake, they were ancient enemies during the reign of Gardener Kings. Before Aegon’s conquest there was a Reach Succession Crisis with both the wives of Mandarly and a Peake having the best claim. The Tyrells would eventually unite the other Reach lords to force a peace and place a cousin of House Gardener on the throne. Later on the Peakes managed to convince a Gardener King to exile them leading to the Starks offering them refuge in the North.
Lmao, Quentin martells death was hilarious thinking that he was related to the Targaryens meant he could control dragons. Daynes maybe, Euron might get one of them, and probably John later in the books.
Glad to see somebody mention the rivalry between House Forrester and House Whitehill from the telltale game of GOT. The Forresters are not game-only original characters. They have been a part of the books by George R.R. Martin. House Forrester was passively mentioned in the 2011: A Dance With Dragons, the fifth entry in the book series. But it was in the Telltale Game series that their history and key members were explored in depth.
I kinda respect Aegon the Unworthy. He just gave zero fucks and I can appreciate that 😂 Especially the way he was just like "Fuck it... Legitamize them all!" and just died
All kings and lords/ladies in Westeros bent their knees to Bran " STARK" The Broken . As long as he reigning, Westeros would be peace and prosperous. He got support/ally from the north, Queen Sansa Stark.
That’s pretty new, the major houses really had no rivalries with each other except probably the Martells and Tyrells. House Lannister and house stark never interacted much before rovers rebellion.
House Slynt and powerful friends in court, House Slynt asked for help from their friends after Janos Slynt The Brave was killed at the wall, The powerful friends claim they never knew the man. There has since been a feud.
Dude....I really like your videos man! I think this is like the 10th video I have watched! Good work man! Are there any that anyone would recommend for me to watch?
This video left out the feud between House Tyrell and House florent , House Arryn rivalry with House Sunderland , House High tower rivalry with House Tyrell , House Tully rivalry with House Frey ,House Connigton rivalry with House Baratheon , House Jordayne rivalry with House Yronwood , House Mallister rivalry with House Greyjoy and maybe House Royce and House Arryn.
You could say the Boltons are to the Northerners as the Thenns are to the Free Folk. At least in the show. I know the Thenns are very different in the books
'a room dedicated to just torturing'. I think we can all agree that a torture room was something quite common for a castle to have back in those dark ages.
