I find it interesting that the Baratheon brothers are all very different men, but what divides them isn't their differences, but their shared pride and self-destructive tendencies.

Anyone else think Bobby is like a protagonist in a game and completes his main quest, defeats the adversary and becomes King and then the game ends. Except it doesn't and he slowly decedents downwards

I know all the reasons I shouldn’t but I love Robert Baratheon. Bad King, amazing warrior, good dude deep down.

Feel very sad for Robert. He loved his best friends sister. Died thinking she loved him back. Died thinking how she might have suffered before dying. Can't blame him for being a bad king or being an alcoholic. He was traumatized. Probably never wanted to be king just wanted to get his love back.

If my GoT memory serves correctly, prime Robert was one of the only three knights Jamie saw himself losing duels to in the Seven Kingdoms. The other two being Arthur Dayne and Barriston Selmy.

Its sad rewatching Robert talk about how he killed Rhagar in front of Barristan. Later, you realize they were best friends and how much Barristan admired and cared for his friend. Much like Robert and Ned.

Irony is Robert and Lyanna would be perfect for each other based on what we know about their characters. She loved riding,hunting,fighting and didn;'t want to be a lady( Arya) like other girls and Robert loved all those things. Fair enough Robert was no Rhaegar, but he was extremely handsome in his youth. Even Cersei admits that much. For all we know Robert truly loved her and he would stop whoring,drinking because of her.

The three Baratheon brothers were each a reflection of their great-grandfather, Lyonel Baratheon, the Laughing Storm. Robert inherited his strength. Stannis inherited his honor and pride. Renly inherited his ability to win the love of the people

Moral of the Story : A Targaryen and Baratheon will always end up broken hearted or even died miserably once they tried to woo a Stark. Rhaegar, Robert, Gendry and Dany experienced it first hand.

Job arryn was badass in all this, he must truly have loved and seen Robert and ned as his own sons to revolt against the targaryens in open rebellion, when in reality none of the events directly affected him in any way, he just straight up was like nuh uh my dudes no one messes with my sons

The book clearly explained that Ned always brings Robert to Winterfell, and I assume that Lyana visits Ned in the eyrie. Lyanna might not love Robert but they knew each other since they were kids. 4:14 She found out about his bastard daughter in the veil and knew he wouldn't remain loyal. he's future marriage to Cercei proved her to be right. What? Its true that Lyanna didn't love him but it has nothing to do with loyalty. I mean why would she think that while both she and Aegon are also cheating with their betrothed and wife, respectively. And about Cercei, Jon Aryn ever the practical, forced Robert to marry Cercei because they needed the alliance of the Lannisters to the new king. Part of the reason why Cercei is a bitch throughout the series is because Robert made it clear, probably at their wedding day, that he loves a dead woman and cercei will not change that. There is a big possibility that Robert would not whore around if Lyanna was married to him.

Oberyn Martell is my favorite character as well. His backstory is nuanced and original. I really hope a future HBO project finds a way to include it even if only in flashbacks.

Robert, like all great leaders, is extremely forward-thinking, playful and melancholic. The dangers he warned have come true. And those he hated showed their true faces ahead. Like Lancel, Jamie & Cercei, Stannis, Kaalese, Dothraki Army or Ned's and Catherine's foolishnes. He is best King and best fighter in prime of GoT series.

I think its unfair to say that Lyanna was "right about Robert being unfaithful". Who's to say what her true reasons were for not loving him the same way he did her. It is true that Robert was unfaithful to Cersei, but Robert never loved Cersei. To remain faithful to someone you can never love would be a difficult task for many men. Had Robert been allowed to pursue his love, it might have changed him as a person. I feel that the true purpose of marriage isn't just to spend the rest of your life with someone. The purpose of marriage is for both parties to become their best selves through union, love, and devotion. When you have married the wrong person, or are wrong yourself, it leads to a toxic and unprofitable situation, much like Robert and Cersei.

I’ll be honest, I don’t think Robert would ever be unfaithful to Lyanna, he did truly love her. And she’s the reason everything happened in GoT if she wouldn’t have ran off, Robert would’ve never tried to take the throne

The Baratheons were the first House that the Targaryens and Valeryons took into their fold when they came to Westeros after the Doom of Valyria, so it was no surprise that Robert was seen as the heir to the Iron Throne.

Robert had quit an advantage compared to the other warriors and knights of Westeros, a warhammer is an effective weapon for destroying armor which most knights use, a sword can pierce armor only with a thrust through the gaps while a hammer could destory armor head on. Most people don't use hammers or maces because they are too cumbersome, making strikes slower and less maneuverable then with a sword but because of Robert's incredible strength he could swing a warhammer without affecting his mobility that much.

I was rewatching season 1. And when they were near lyannas grave, it was like Sean Bean already knew the secret, so he acted it so well, and so subtle, atleast to me, it now seems so obvious the secret he keeps. The part with Robert and lyanna is what reminded me.

Someone else mentioned it and I agreed. Lyanna is a damn hypocrite. She believes Robert will be unfaithful and a defining reason she doesnt love him YET She goes off with a MARRIED man, who whether he truly loved his wife or not, still marrried. Lyanna’s morality has no say to defend her for what she did after hr views on Robert. If anything, it is worse on Lyanna’s part since she took an already married man. It is not like she just had sex with him and that was that.

8:30 that's what separates Robert from a lot of other people winning wars/gaining power. You have to know when to retreat. Robert was bloodthirsty and a drunk AND he probably felt invincible with all his wins under his breastplate stretcher. Yet, he knew when not to push his luck.

Out of all the characters from the war it’s Robert I wish I could’ve seen in his prime. His confidence as king was so bad ass. None of the Lannister kings had the same presence. Would’ve loved to see him take on a warrior of similar skill

This is a great video! My personal theory is that Bran's time-travelling interference is the reason Lyanna and Rhaegar got together, not out of love or to fulfill a prophecy, but because Bran needs J for the the fight with the others.

I really like the calm narration too. 😊 I put it on 0.75 audio speed last night and could totally rest while listening. 😌 💤 I'd never really read the books;, I think I read the 1st 3 or 4 pages and the prose didn't grab me (I'm a writer and wanted to make learn from GRRM), so I stopped, so I've never really read the books--at least not yet! I only watched the 1st 4 seasons of the show, although I know all about everything--I've watched tons of videos (it's a good subject for videos!). I am astonished and amazed at the research & scholarship and fascinating analysis and interpretation... (you probably know about Hills Alive; she's an amazing interpreter!, the Lemon Tree video just knocks it out of the park with tragic, deep, forlorn insight...) But again--the *art*--which is so vividly and abundantly on display in this video... ... the abundance of creativity that this series has inspired is Staggering… That it self speaks for what the book series must really be. It's probably, although I can't say from direct experience, an *actual masterpiece of our era.* So glad people like you are into this… I'm just a fellow traveler but you fill up some of the weary and distraught moments of my day. (I find myself engaged to someone with Much Worse PTSD and TBI than I anticipated. I'll probably have to get...unengaged...
