My mom sent me to Mormon girls camp when I was a kid. A mom/leader did a talk about how she struggled with depression but fixed it by remembering to keep smiling and acting happy no matter what her feelings were because it was her responsibility to cheer up/lift up her husband and family, not to bring them down. The kids would get only things they needed like underwear, sheets, crayons, while the mother got herself designer items under the guise of being able to hand them down to get children one day. As she got pregnant again she’d push the poor little one away and make them the responsibility of the other kids. Ruby never had her own space, her own room, or her own life. She lived to please her Narcissist mother and was taught that being a mother meant you were then privileged and could do whatever you want. Unfortunately this is really common. CPS is FLOODED with cases, and the workers are often given an impossible workload and stacked with an insurmountable amount of cases to triage, sort, and decide on a path of action/inaction. But at least the kids had, you know, beds and a bedroom door they could close to avoid the cameras. And the crew was there for set hours to film a season and then was gone. The camera didn't live in the house with them full time. I haven't even watched any of the Duggers, it's too creepy. Although the show did result in an amusing interaction with my very old very catholic grandmother at a family gathering back in the show's early years. She had been sitting there quietly, thinking to herself at the table, and then suddenly pipes up "I don't understand those Polly Gammy families. What is that all about?" And we were all like "grandma WHAT" and she was like "you know, the Polly Gammy people. I saw them on TV." It took a good five minutes of struggling to understand her until she said "you know, the man has all those wives and kids". And we were all like OOOOOOHHHHH.

My mom growing up also never allowed ANY privacy. One of the things she did when I was very young was telling me that god is watching. When that didn't work (since i never believed in invisible beings like god, santa claus, tooth fairy) she said she set up cameras everywhere, in and outside my house (even in toilets and bathrooms). The fear of her knowing that ive lied was drilled into me so i never lied. I once tried telling her "i love you" for the first time and I felt like I lied to her and that immediately made me go into panic. I specifically avoided getting into relationships, having hobbies, buying stuff for myself, having fun basically, because she would always snoop. It triggers me so bad still remembering the stuff she did, i would scratch myself, rip my hair out, hit my own head, hit my fingers on any hard surface and other stuff I wont get into so i could feel that pain instead. I would tremble any time i had to talk about myself, because I was always interrogated by her. Any time I have to talk to friends about myself or to anyone i will tremble, even when its not face to face. She wanted to know all aspects of my life so i purposely didn't do ANYTHING at all in my life, so I wouldn't need to talk about it to her so now I dont even know what kind of person I am, what i like or dislike. Please allow your kids privacy. Let them have their own space where they can experiment with themselves, develop their own independent lives and interests.

I’ve been following this family for years, and I’ve been praying for her downfall. But I wish it hadn’t happened like this. Ruby’s sisters have been reaching out to the oldest kids who have left or are soon to leave the house, offering their homes to them. Them and the oldest daughter have been very vocal about the fact that they do not support ruby or her connections podcast and cut all communications with her a while ago. The oldest daughter went on a podcast explaining what it was like to be in college and to be slowly de-programmed from her parents brainwashing. The father to my knowledge stopped associating with ruby and there’s rumours he left her but he used to defend her wack ass parenting and I dont think he should be let off the hook. Connections was a pay to veiw podcast that charged people thousands of dollars a month to be explicitly taught how to essentially emotionally and physically abuse your kids. They were obviously super transphobic and homophobic and put ALOT of dangerous rhetoric into the world. Ruby was definitely the more unhinged of the two but she’s been unraveling since the oldest daughter left and got a mind of her own. (Who we all thought was gonna be a ruby carbon copy)

The reason it probably took CPS so long to step in, is because they don’t have as much power as most people think they do. If they show up to the house and the parents don’t want CPS to speak to the kids, then CPS can’t speak with them. Also parents like this usually threaten their kids if they talk to CPS. “You’ll never see your family again” or “I’ll punish you in such in such way.” You need really good evidence to actually have anything happen. Usually the kids have to tell them specifically what’s going on (which they probably won’t do because they’re being threatened), you need some kind of proof, or CPS has to actually see a bad living situation with their own eyes. And if the parents won’t let CPS into the house, then they can’t assess the living situation. It’s very sad, but unfortunately that’s the way the system is set up (this is in my experience, and what I’ve personally seen)

Yeah CPS usually came in the house but my mom made us DEEP CLEAN the house before they'd come over and we usually only could talk to them with her also in the room so no one ever said anything. She'd put on her radio voice and the happy go lucky mom act and it always worked every time. Also CPS never even checked out the whole house every time they came over, just sat in the living room for an hour and left. Looking back now I wish I had said what was going on to them and gotten us taken away from her. Could've saved me and all my siblings a little less trauma to deal with for the rest of our lives. But yeah CPS really is useless that's why people probably stopped calling cause nothing ever came of it.

The tone when she says that her teacher was "uncomfortable"... what a See You Next Tuesday. Plus, the kids are conditioned to lie to CPS in these situations. CPS has interviews with the kids WITH the parents there in a lot of cases.

exmormon here and currently living in utah- the "chambers" he's referring to are located in the mormon temples where rituals/ceremonies take place ranging from baptisms to the dead to marriage endowments. it's revered as super sacred and a lot of people are disturbed when they are able to finally enter the temple. as ethan said, the way the church tries to portray itself is extremely different from the reality behind closed doors. Homophobia, misogyny, racism, pedophilia, pretty much anything you can think of is what this church has been founded on. This church has 150 billion dollars from tithing and investments (?? yes a church) and gives 1% of tithing funds to charity. So disturbing and hard to interact with people still in the church because there's a massive cognitive dissonance.

I mean I was raised Mormon, and I never heard “food privileges” or “bed privileges”; but my family was also just me my mom and my dad. My mom was a convert and never acted like some crazy Mormon mom. I’m not active in the church but I knew some who acted like Ruby…. But not to this extent. It’s absolutely ridiculous! Also I don’t live in Utah…. Utah is insane!

Yes I mean this is an extreme case but all these words and a lot of these behaviors stem from Mormon culture at large. None of this is surprising to me. There is so much hidden abuse behind smiles in Utah.

I wonder if she ever thought how she would feel if her kids were treated, and spoke to her how she speaks to them? How insane that she got away with it for so long as well. I'm concerned about those children's father. Special places for people like them.

Born and raised in Utah and grew up Mormon. It’s absolutely a cult. Proud to be ex-Mormon and to be free of it ❤

As someone who was raised Mormon, I will say that her ideology contradicts Mormon values in that children are viewed as innocent and deserving of a loving household. Their doctrine specifically mentions that those who abuse children will be held accountable on judgement day. But I do agree. There is a definite connection between crime and religion.

can we finally let Mormonism die off? I was raised Mormon and it really messed with my brain, and I’m so sick of families like this one. Those poor babies deserved so much better.

It so sad that the kids suffered for SO. LONG. before they got help. I’m anxious to see if other kids in similar situations will soon get the help they need now

Right? Quite often they suck before they reach that many kids too though. The youngest sister Ellie had one child and was a pretty good mom. Then she got pregnant again within 6 months and used her entire pregnancy and newborn phase as an excuse to ignore her first baby. He was grown, and of no interest to her. She was obsessed over the second baby… until she got pregnant again. In an instant that kid was his older brother’s responsibility to take care of, as she once again hid in her room during her pregnancy and newborn months. If the older boys wanted to see her, they had to come into the bedroom to do so because she would rarely leave. She shows no interest in all 3 boys now. She decided to have another baby a year ago and was obsessed with having a girl. Baby was born 6 months ago and both Ellie and Jared act as though they are a family of 3, often going out with just the baby and posting pictures on their instagrams. The boys are learning not to expect attention from their parents and it’s heartbreaking to see. The oldest is now 10 and has far too much responsibility on his shoulders. He works harder than both his parents and it shows in every line in his juvenile, malnourished face.

It's so weird to me because I watched some of their videos when I was a kid and they seemed so normal to me but then as I got older, I stopped watching a lot of the family channels I used to enjoy as a kid, and then videos surfaced like the 'bedroom privileges' and the 6 year old going hungry at school because she didn't make her lunch and the mum saying 'I hope no one gives her food' like wtf. It's so disgusting, I hope the kids will be able to get through this. And the eldest is really strong for speaking out against her mum, it'd be so easy for her to have become brainwashed into the weird mindset
