Richard Theodore Otcasek[1] (March 23, 1944 - September 15, 2019), known as Ric Ocasek, was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He was the primary co-lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, songwriter, and frontman for the rock band the Cars. In addition to his work with the Cars, Ocasek recorded seven solo albums, and his song "Emotion in Motion" was a top 20 hit in the United States in 1986. Ocasek also worked as a record producer for artists such as Motion City Soundtrack, Suicide, Bad Brains, Weezer, Nada Surf, Guided by Voices, and No Doubt. In 2018, Ocasek was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Cars.
Ocasek and Cars co-founder Benjamin Orr were close friends who became estranged when the band broke up. The two reconciled prior to Orr's death in 2000. Their friendship was commemorated in the song "Silver", which Ocasek wrote in memory of Orr.[5][31][32]
Ocasek was married three times. His first wife Constance divorced him in Ohio in 1971. In the same year he married Suzanne Otcasek, who uses the original spelling of Ocasek's name. They were married for 17 years. During filming of the music video for the Cars' song "Drive" in 1984, Ocasek met 18-year-old Czech-born supermodel Paulina Porizkova, while he was still married to Suzanne. Ocasek and Suzanne divorced in 1988. He and Porizkova were married on August 23, 1989 on Saint-Barthélemy island. In May 2018, Porizkova announced she and Ocasek had separated a year earlier.
Ocasek had six sons, two from each of his three marriages.
Ocasek was found dead on September 15, 2019, by his estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova, at his New York City townhouse, which they still shared following their separation the previous May. He had been recovering from surgery. The Chief Medical Examiner office reported that Ocasek died from natural causes. He suffered from both hypertensive heart and coronary artery disease.
Porizkova and Ocasek were still in the process of their divorce, but he had disinherited her in a new will, alleging that before his recent surgery she had abandoned him. He also disinherited two of his six sons (Chris and Adam), which required a probate judge to rule on the veracity of the abandonment claims before the remaining estate could be divided.
Ric is buried at Nine Partners Cemetery in Millbrook, New York.

Ric was an unbelievable songwriter, Ben Orr's vocals really brought that to life and honestly the rest of the band are absolute top shelf musicians. It's a shame they didn't remain as the original 5 piece for much longer.

22+ years have gone by since Benjamin Orr was taken away. Almost a quarter of a century has passed, and still we, by the thousands still seek, listen and watch. All on film and recorded, This band changed the course of music. MTV was new, the world was in the midst of changes, and 4 years before their album hit the stores, VIET NAM ended. As we all blasted out THE CARS from our car speakers, crusin the streets for hours in our cars, hanging out in droves, we teens felt immortal. Knowing surely that death was a part of life...none of us were even thinking that could ever happen to any of us. As time flew by, and the years clicked by like mere seconds, did we really become aware that indeed none of us were exempt this fact. Benjamin Orr's untimely passing simply was the wake up reality call....altho THE CARS still blasts on and thru the airwaves, Our youth had long since rushed by and we went from kids to senior citizens in a blink of an eye. Benjamin Orr's dedication and loyalty to play and sing never wavered. In fact he was on stage a mere week before he succumbed to the cancer that ravished his body. His death really blew me away. 53 years old. As the crowd dwindled in numbers, I hope he sees now that by the Thousands, still- we still tune in, still watch, still listen to that pheonominal voice. As for Ric, and Ben, there was no competition, they both were equally partnered in the bands success. Their passing came far too quick. Be it a mere 53, or unexpectedly at 75, they both will remain immortal, as we once felt when we were blasting "THE CARS" in our rooms, or cars in our youth. This event called "life" is far far too short. Pre-2000 I wanna go back. The world was a much better place, the human race a different breed of those of today. The music was music, cars you could work on in your driveway, and a world of face to face communication, comrades, friends and outdoors. Ric and Ben.....thanks for being one of the best things of our youth. See you on the other side. A loyal fan, Laurel Wood

Ric Ocasek was such an important influence in my life. I was late to the party and didn't really notice The Cars until the song Why Can't I Have You was released, from Heartbeat City. I felt like Ric understood my feelings about this girl I liked, so I bought the album. After that I had to get the debut album, and then another, and another... eventually I had to have it all, including bootlegs and unreleased tracks, and even the album Milkwood, as well as solo releases. I strongly recommend Quick Change World, which half of it was produced like The Cars, and many of those songs could have easily been on any Cars album. But the moment that changed my life was seeing the picture inside the album, Door to Door (which I love and don't understand why it wasn't more popular). Ric produced this album, and the picture of him over the console fascinated me, and I had to know what every button did. So I started researching learning audio production, and after a bit of school and internships, I made a successful career out of being an audio engineer. I was even more fortunate to meet Ric at his art show in March 2019, just a few months before he passed away. I asked him to sign his poetry book Lyrics and Prose, and could finally tell him I got into audio thanks to him. He asked if I was still doing it, and I told him I was and where I worked if he ever wanted to stop by. He seemed to really appreciate me buying his book, and he thanked me for that. Then my brain locked up, and I got tongue tied and just said, "Thank you for...... everything!". Every day, I wish I had said a million more things, but maybe that was enough? Thank you for sharing this video. I don't imagine I'll be up there any time soon, so I appreciate this beautiful visit. And FYI: Keep on Laughin' was a song from the solo album This Side of Paradise, as well as the doodle on the chair he wrote the night before he passed away.

Met Ric twice. First time was he was coming out of a record store by himself on 8th street in Greenwich Village. I believe he lived on that street. Chatted with him a little. Nice guy. Second time was strange. I was bartending an event Paulina and him attended. I found it a little odd that not only didn't they speak to each other during the cocktail hour, when they entered the dining room they didn't sit together or acknowledge each other. I thought something was up. Not two weeks later their divorce was announced. It was big news if you remember.

I live in Hershey, PA now, but I drove up and stayed in Dutchess County so I could attend the Depeche Mode concert at MSG last night. Also I wanted to come visit friends in Amenia and go to Ric Ocasek's grave and say thank you for making wonderful music with the Cars. I'm certain Ric and Ben Orr are jamming it out on the clouds in heaven as we speak.

It was awesome to see the Cars get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago. They're a great band for sure. I love the song Moving In Stereo. Thanks for this great video Scott.

You are always so respectful. I'm an Aussie and have visited Jimi Hendrix grave more than once. I don't know what it is, curiousity? Maybe, but I feel it's so much more than that a sense of closeness? Perhaps or respect to the people who have created so many wonderful memories through their music or art of acting. That makes me appreciate your sharing these visits and videos that I love to watch. Thank you so much! ❤🎶🎸🎤🎹🎙️📻..I Love the Cars. 🚗🚗🚗

Thanks for another great video and a walk down memory lane, Scott! When I was in high school I burned many tanks of gas listening to the Cars and other great artists of the 80's on cassette. That's been a few years ago but it seems like yesterday. Since Your Gone was my favorite of theirs and is to this day. Thanks again for all you do and taking us for the ride!

Nice intro. Candy O was one of the first records I ever bought. A friend of mine saw him in LA traffic one day. She said he was driving a junky car. 😀 The Cars music was the soundtrack of my life in the 70s and 80s, like millions of others. Thank you Ric and we miss you.
