Fun fact: almost all of the members got injured on set. Gerard Way and Frank Iero tore muscles in their limbs, their drummer got third-degree burns on his leg, and lead guitarist Ray Toro fractured his hand. The only member who wasn't injured was their bassist, Mikey.

The third verse and last chorus of this song always break me down to tears. Gerard's voice is fucking amazing and his range is incredible. And not just his technical vocal range but his emotional range within his vocals too.

This song is about not giving into anxiety and depression. An anti suicide song :). During the recording of this album Bassist Mikey Way was dealing with severe anxiety and even ran away from the band at some point and this song was written while he was gone as a letter to bring him back.
@Slugoon
@Slugoon 3 года назад
(not so fun fact): the singer (gerard) wrote this song for his brother mikey (the bassist) after mikey had to temporarily leave the band during recording due to severe depression, anxiety, and addiction. gerard had also gone through similar things a few years earlier, but was sober at that point and had made it through. adds a lot with the context of the lyrics, oof.

I must have listened to people slag My Chemical Romance off for, I don't know, nearly a decade? And when I finally heard them at the age of 40 when their Danger Days album came out, I realized they were actually really above-average rock musicians. And now that they're finding a new life on RU-vid reactions, everyone who's never heard them before loves them. I wonder why the hate and where it came from when they were new? Same with Fall Out Boy, you hear over and over that they're crap, and they're really great, too. So I think people are taking something that's not to their taste and calling it bad? That's the nearest I can figure. Fascinating, really.
@sootysootysooty
@sootysootysooty 3 года назад
in an interview (circa 2007?) gerard way mentioned that in the early days of mcr they very deliberately distanced themselves from the more traditionally “hardcore” scene because of the levels of bigotry present and because of the attitudes that a lot of the bands/fans still had (i think this was in response to a question about mcr having gay fans) and they did not want to be associated with those ideologies. as a band they sort of stood for that rejection of the typical image of what bands in that kind of scene were like (misogynistic, homophobic, racist, etc.), and made a point of celebrating and including people that were often pushed out of and ostracised within the hardcore circuit (which is why they often got comments intended as derogatory about them being gay, sissies, f*gs, etc. and im guessing is why so many people are quick to judge and write them off - because they have heard a lot of “bad” things about this band.)
@XxLeGiTxXfAiLs
@XxLeGiTxXfAiLs 3 года назад
I think during the time people just considered MCR was only for the “emo” kids and never actually realized that most of their songs are actually just good rock songs. IMO the black parade is a top 3 album of the 21st century.
@dianem8544
@dianem8544 3 года назад
@@sootysootysooty Wow, REALLY? That makes me sad, that homophobic attitudes could translate into "the band's not talented" to a wider (and probably not homophobic) audience. People really don't know what they're missing with MCR. Also really interesting because Nirvana had a similar arc a decade earlier. Didn't like the kind of fan they were drawing and told fans if they didn't like gays, women, or people of different races, they were cordially invited to fuck off. They wrote "In Bloom" about those fans. They didn't get an MCR-level of backlash; the worst thing that was said about Nirvana at the time was that they were overrated. P.S.! Another parallel was that Nirvana made out with each other in public to piss off the homophobes. :) Once on SNL during the closing credits in, like, 1992 or something.
@dianem8544
@dianem8544 3 года назад
@@XxLeGiTxXfAiLs Maybe that's what happens when they try to invent a new genre name? You call something by a new name (emo) and it gives people something to not like. Because it's CLEARLY rock. You don't need to rebrand rock every five years, you know? It's just rock. And it's called "emo," as though non-emo music isn't emotional? Oh, I get it, "emo music" as opposed to all that non-emo music written by and for robots, which is none? Makes sense!
@AGrrrlsTwoSoundCents
@AGrrrlsTwoSoundCents 3 года назад
Bigotry and elitism are systemically ingrained not just in rock music, but the whole music industry. MCR were a deliberately transgressive band who made it abundantly clear that they wanted nothing to do with that. Their mission was to impact lives and provide hope to people who were ostracized and needed it. What people who hated them didn't understand was that the venom and vitriol of the public actually made them stronger. Watch this performance at Reading and Leeds in 2006 where they got bottled and it didn't even phase them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WUp-XyMJHjs.html

This is a great song! Psyched that you like it. Especially if you like metal or hardcore, you need to dig into some songs from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. If you want songs with a video: Helena. If you want songs without, the entire album is pretty amazing, maybe Thank You for the Venom or The Jetset Life is Gonna Kill you. (Note: Black Parade, Three Cheers and Danger Days are all concept albums with narratives interwoven throughout, which makes them great for full album reviews. The lyrical content often seems oblique without that context. Danger Days even had a comic book series. ;-) )

I LOVE that solo. It's such a tricky one to get right that I can honestly say that in all the years I've been watching people attempting covers on RU-vid, it's only recently that I've seen someone nail it - and he usually does Def Leppard covers.

What I love about MCR is that you are really pulled into the lyrics as they tell a story. Sure, they do have songs that you can just put in the background while you do other stuff, but most of them are - at least for me - such that I have to listen to the story. Really captivating.

I feel like the order you reacted to MCR in was pretty appropriate especially because I feel like it emulates the way a lot of people in our age group got into MCR (I’m a few years younger than you were in this video but still we both where in school when emo was a popular sub-genre/culture) 1.) Welcome to the Black Parade It’s the surface level emo classic everyone is aware of G note and all. Not their strongest song but good to break the ice into 2) Teenagers Another very well known song of theirs a quintessential angry teen anthem. This song helps showcase their ability to craft catchy pop punk anthems, and willingness to poke at edgy topics 3) Famous Last Words This song demonstrates their message as a band and shows off their biggest strength as a band, their ability to blend technical ability and emotion seamlessly. This song is another popular song of theirs but not because of its cult following or mainstream appeal but because it helped hundreds if not thousands of people save themselves from the darkest points of their lives. Weather that dark point is mental illness , addiction or grief this song gives people a mantra to chant while they try again and agin to get back up.

Have you heard any Twenty One Pilots? You may have heard Stressed Out or Ride on the radio before, but I would recommend starting with a song like "Car Radio" or "Holding On To You", they dont have a very "specific" genre, they're a little rap, a little rock, a little alt, a little pop, they're really all over the place but it's so cool watching people react to them for the first time! And their fanbase is very loyal like MCR's !
