Prague has always attracted famous personalities. However, in its time, you could meet here celebrities of truly global importance - one of the most famous physicists, an eccentric inventor and a musical genius. We'll tell you who they were in the latest episode of the Live Prague series.
Where did the people who made their mark on world history live or go for a beer?
1. Albert Einstein
Today, Einstein is the most famous scientist of all time, but in his time, the father of relativity had trouble finding a professorship at a university. Then came a rescue in the form of an offer from Charles University in Prague. The famous physicist spent three semesters there between 1911 and 1912. During his stay, he was a frequent guest at meetings of intellectuals at the White Unicorn House, and he liked to go for coffee at the Café Louvre. It was also thanks to the facilities provided by Prague that Einstein was able to start working in peace on the theory of relativity.
2. Nikola Tesla
The famous inventor and visionary started attending Charles University in 1880 after he had to leave his studies in Graz due to his bohemian life. He lived in a modest apartment in Ve Smečkách Street, where he is now commemorated by a bust. Just as Tesla never forgot Prague, and especially his physics professor Ernest Mach, Prague has never forgotten Tesla. In Dejvice, in the street that bears his name, you will find the largest monument to Nikola Tesla in the world!
3. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The brilliant composer found a second home in Prague. While in Vienna the public received his works lukewarmly, the local audience greeted every opera with enthusiasm. This is illustrated by the musical genius' famous statement "my Prague people understand me" and the opera Don Giovanni, which Mozart composed especially for Prague and which had its world premiere at the Estates Theatre in 1787. The composer first associated his stay with the house at the Three Golden Lions and later with the villa Bertramka.
