That's because they don't overblow and try to power through every song with aggressive arrangements. The SWAC started that culture and now most HBCU bands all have adopted that. It's a battle mentality. Prairie View is a SWAC band that doesn't do that though. Two of their first band directors as well as their creator, George Edwards, was a FAMU graduate and performed under Dr. Foster way back when. They brought a lot of FAMUs musical concepts to PV in the late 70's. Fast forward to today and every member in their band is required to join at least one music ensemble during the Spring semester. Too many HBCU marching bands have gotten away from music and mostly focus on power. That's always been my biggest gripe. ✔
@@El_Chuncho What always gets me is SWAC members and Fans just go with "that is our style" BS. SU especially likes to say they are basing their sound on the New Orleans style of play. I have heard many live bands from NO and they don't sound like that. A difference in style would be having a country, gospel, and opera singer sing the National Anthem. They all will sound different and be executed in the musical limits of the human voice (Opera singer training to be louder and have higher range). Listening to many SWAC bands is like someone screaming or yelling their way through the National Anthem (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u7nFOgisvPs.html). At the National BOTB this year it was hard for myself and others to try and understand what those SWAC bands were even playing. Lastly they say they have a brassy sound. I have also heard many Military Bands, Brass Bands, and DCI bands all with little or no woodwinds and they still sound great in their various styles of playing.
@@Shortyfatts The biggest culprits in the SWAC are SU and JSU. They are both cut from the same cloth [which is why they hate each other so much] and they're the two bands that everyone falls in love with. But the blame can be placed on SU. If band history serves me correct, SU started the culture of playing like that. SU began to write more aggressive arrangements which made band members play outside of the viable scope of their instruments. The advent of rap brought that on and fans became hooked to the power concept when those 90's rap songs were played. Before the advent of rap, every band in HBCU marching band land had much more versatility musically. Now it's all about power which often leads to overblowing. I've had many spats with SU and JSU folks over the years whenever they dog other bands for not sounding like them. And the New Orleans brass band culture thing is an excuse SU fans always use anytime someone is critical of their band. Deep down, they know it's bullshit. As a PV alum, playing with power was never the sole focus when I was there, even today under a different director. But being in the SWAC, you're expected to have a little bit of power for some song selections. That's just the culture of the conference now and it has nothing to do with New Orleans like SU fans love to claim. So I get some of it. The problem is that most SWAC bands [SU, JSU, GSU, etc] and the many SWAC copycat bands in other conferences [Talladega] and high schools rely too much on power now and cranking on other bands. It makes outsiders think that HBCU bands are mostly one dimensional bands with 0 versaltilty musically. Some of the most viewed HBCU bands on RU-vid features SU and all people see is them playing fff most of the time.

It's amazing that it's been 4 decades. I marched from 1977 to 1981 and seeing this warm-up bring back all the excitement and feelings of playing. I even remember where I was standing playing tuba. Wow!
I miss being in that band room! When I first came too band camp in 98 I knew this was the band for me . The warm up always gave me chills . Also as a woodwind player ,I love how we are utilized. Hubba #100 good luck this weekend at the classic. Lurch , Fall 2000

I remember being at Miami Edison in the late 80's and looking up to the the "100" I got chills then and I get chills still. Articulation, dynamics, musicianship, and style. Always on point. Thank you for 40 years of enjoyment.
Famu sounds AMAZING!!! I do think a distinction needs to be made from concert band vs. marching band in it’s intent. I happen to believe FAMU is one of the best to do it in terms of a concert band sound but marching band (to me) is just a different mindset, particularly in the HBCU world. I really do appreciate FAMU’s professionalism!!!
The Marching 100 and the Spartan Legion are the only two HBCU band programs in the nation that give me chills THIS consistently! You guys have built one heck of an institution in our culture and are to be COMMENDED!!!!
The difference is that the majority of these students are music majors and have a musical background of music theory and experience. That’s what holds them apart from other collegiate bands. They are then able to put a lot more concentration on marching and field performances.
Quite the opposite. Most of us were non music majors. We couldn't be in the marching band if you were not in one of the ensembles the prior spring semester.
In the 60’s FAMU band was then accepting females into the marching band. With my background in music and band I wanted to audition but at that time you had to be a music major to be considered. I guess Times have changed. They are still the best outstanding band in music and marching. So much class!

Yeahhhh... I represent many of the “OG’ relics” of the late 60’s and early 70’s, and I still can’t hear a band or orchestra tuning and warming up without it giving me chills within and without. Tears well up in my eyes still at the sounds of the Magnificent Marching 100!!

There is no band like the 💯💯💯💯💯 they have always given me thrills, chills and have moved me to tears with their courage, commitment and consistency since first hearing them at 5 years old. Always a Rattler🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍hubba💯💕💕
