@@danram247 They can't cancel, but they could have postponed it to the next day and make a double-header or move to a later date. It's basically the team's call. Good thing is, Minute Maid's got a roof and is not totally open, so you still have that luxury of being indoors. People can also prepare ahead of time. The city does have garages.
@@case139 yeah they did something like that back in the 2022 ALCS when the Astros were going against the Yanks and the storms in New York were really bad
@@danram247Its because these type of storms build on their own strength and can go from a gorgeous afternoon with a projected thunderstorm to your phone firing off Tornado warnings in minutes. The destructive part of the storm was also over in a 20-30 mins. I was on my patio playing guitar by 7.
My hunch is they're not going to do anything significant to retrofit Minute Maid, other than perhaps replacing items too badly damaged from last night. The thing is, regardless of enclosed stadium design, there's an upper economic limit to what you can do to protect for weather events. I recall one of my Engineering instructors tell us that the Astrodome roof had an upper limit for wind resistance, and that it's failure mode would be in LIFT (and if you had a Force 5 Hurricane, you might see that). It just costs gobs of money and structure, particularly for such a rare event, that it just isn't seen as being worth it. Also recall that there was 1 instance of near-baseball cancellation, and 1 of an actual cancellation, when the Astros were playing in the Astrodome. Reason: there was so much rain nobody (including players, staff, umpires, etc) could GET to the Astrodome! So we had "rain outs" for a domed stadium! Those were freak instances, but any stadium can have them.
You should check out the first advertisement on the Mets uniform last year. There was so much uproar that owner Steve Cohen had new ones created immediately (the size, fit, color was so bad)
The window slides from the top I think and is not connected to the bottom part around the train tracks like you can see the gaps if you’re there. And there is a bullpen in left field that’s behind a wall
Agree on the logos on uniforms. We have more than enough advertising in sports. This isn’t European Football or NASCAR. It makes the uniforms looks cheap and is distracting visually. They need to go.
Can the Neo-Astrodome be rebuilt for the Houston Astros next door to NRG Stadium where the Texans, Gamblers, and Roughnecks make their home games when the original Astrodome will be blown up in pieces?
Ditch the retractable roof and go with an beaux art arched lightly tinted glass sunroof with a steel wire arched vaulted ceiling much like the old Pennsylvania Station concourse that's anywhere between 77 and 85 meters in height for better airflow and more balanced gameplay
Sadly that’s where it’s at, unfortunately fans accept this. MLB USED be my favorite sport, I no longer watch random MLB games, All-Star, playoffs, World Series. I boycotted my team the Tigers for 2 months after they did this last season including not attending a game for first time with the exception of covid 2020 since 1989. I find myself distant from the team I grew up loving, mix in the owner spends below league average, I never liked Comerica Park, now in its 25th season really needs some major upgrades including eliminating the original wall/ dimensions, they have another fence in front that looks so little league, guess with the ads on the jerseys it is now little league. I remember as a kid our team was a sponsor.
Minute Maid and NRG stadium hates opening the roof no matter how nice out it is. MMP however opens it way more than NRG. NRG can go years not opening that damn roof and weather late in the football season here is always great. I can understand September to November where its still 90 degrees here during that time
Yeah, what's the point of having a retractable roof if you're not even going to use it that often? LOL! Like you said in Houston it gets nicer between November-January to have it open during that time of year. In September-November when it's too hot is understandable. It should be open more in late season games and night games as well.
Dude, I was stuck on the freeway when that storm hit. It was a monster. I felt my car almost lift off the ground. I’m not surprised by the damage at MMP.
Minute Maid Park is beautiful to me, it looks modern even today, but obviously there's some mistakes that was made in the design of the roof. Retractable roofs in that era must've not been built to cover the whole park well. I wonder if the technology used for retractable roofs today is better than it was 20-25 years ago when these parks were made. They can easily just fix that as Houston shouldn't need a new ballpark for a long-time.
Since it happens so infrequently, they probably won’t make any special effort to deal with it. Teams in general don’t seem very motivated to address a problem like this. Miami’s new dome started leaking within the first couple of seasons of opening, and it took several years off and on to remedy it. Agree with you about Cleveland. They have become the Guardians of corporatism run amok.
THANK YOU for calling out the grotesque advertisement on MLB jerseys. I feel like only one who thinks this is HORRIBLE and unacceptable! Shows these owners are not fans at all, someone said it best this is equivalent of putting a bumper sticker on a Bentley. And some are worse than others like Cleveland, also notice how they’re not uniformed too? Meaning a right handed batter and pitcher has them on one sleeve and a left handed the other, really shows when teammates are next to each other congratulating after a run scored that they have different style jerseys on. Unfortunately people just accept anything these days, honestly MLB WAS my favorite sport, ads on jerseys was always my breaking point, so I no longer watch random MLB games, All-Star and postseason, I was one of the few that would watch all those games regardless if my team was in there or not. Also when my team the Tigers went this route of placing a Meijer advertisement on there once iconic jerseys, I actually boycotted the next two months on tv, and last year was first time with the exception of 2020 covid that I didn’t attend a Tigers or MLB game since 1989, my first game ever attended was in 1990, so I attended at least one game minimum for 30 plus years. It’s fans like me that ManFRAUD and MLB have pushed away, spit on. I remember when the ideal of advertisement being placed on a jersey was first mentioned in late 90s, I thought to myself then that would be horrible and would really hurt my interest in the game, and all these years later as it’s finally happened I feel the same way. Again unfortunately I’m in the minority, now fans don’t like it, but they accept it because as a society we just accept anything for most part. I actually go MLB X page and wheh they post the scores I sarcastically rephrase it, saying the Marathon Guardians defeat the QuikTrip Royals or the Starr Insurance Yankees defeat the MassMutual Red Sox. It’s very unfortunate that the tradionalist in MLB are gone, MLB survived and thrived over 150 years without crossing over to the dark side uniform wise. As you said, this isn’t the WNBA, I get those sports, CFL, UFL, The G League. The can of worms began with the NBA in 2017, it’ll only be a matter of time for the NFL to join, NFL despite the game never being more popular, thriving financially, are definitely going spit on the fans for more revenue. Again these are billionaires, if they had any fan in them, they wouldn’t do this. Crazy here in Detroit the Tigers did this, yet they still have a payroll below the league average and a ballpark in definite need of renovations including fixing the double padded outfield wall that looks little league.
Yeah, the fact that the flag is still up in those conditions is a finable offense. Falls under flag desecration. Other than that, easy fix tbh. Take the flags down after every game.
There are no "Water-Proof" guarantees for a sliding panels retractable roof. They put flaps, between the panels (like the ones at the bottom of your external house doors) to deter the rain, but they are still capable of leaking in high, sideways wind situations like yesterday..
Not much of a fan of the advertising but Manfred should never allowed Nike to put that stupid swish on the front of the jerseys. That started it all. Majestic never had their name on the front. Just good quality jerseys
1: no one was “pissed”. It was a severe storm with tornados touching down around town. 2: This is apparently an issue that last happened back in 2019 (5 years ago). 3: it’s “supposedly”. Not “supposably” 4: nothing is “really wrong”. This video is borderline clickbait.
The taxpayers showed up and built new stadiuks for both the Astros and Texans in early 2000's So the owners in this situation should pay for the renovations
As a Cleveland guardians fan. I don’t see the problem with the marathon logo. It’s not the exact same colors but it’s red white and blue. The colors of the guardians. Quit bitching
Sorry, I'm with Ginger on this one. The jersey looks like trash 🗑. But hey, every team has to cover every square inch of their stadiums with sponsorships anymore. Sad sight to see...
No it’s not we had a tornado 130 mile a hour wind 1.4 million people have no power and glass was blown out of a bunch of buildings last night tress were down power lines it’s going to take months to fix all the damage done
@randytabor754 THIS. 25 mph winds in the stadium doesn't sound so bad when you compare it to 130 mph outside ... it's almost expected. What likely happened was the walls/windows flexed under an 130 mph wind load (and that's the side of the stadium taking the brunt of the weather yesterday), and that's where the wind and rain came in. Keep in mind that there were windows blown out in skyscrapers just blocks away in downtown Houston. With that in mind, Minute Maid damage could have been much worse - at least none of the windows completely failed.
Just like I said before about the renovation of the stadium some Einstein has watched to much major league the movie ,what's next for Cleveland using a charter bus 🚐 to away games or putting a Chico's bail bonds patch on the uniforms too😲
