When you hear a title like: “Pines of Rome", you might think of tree-lined streets and romantic ruins. But when the Disney animators heard this music, they thought of something completely different. Here is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro James Levine, performing Ottorino Respighi's “Pines of Rome."
I dissolved into tears during the middle sequence where the baby whale gets separated from its parents. The images evoke memories of a lost child and the veil of death that separates us.
The part at the very end of this segment where the music slowly builds and builds until we get to the big crescendo is one of the most mesmerizing things I ever seen and heard as a kid and it still is to this day.
This is exactly what happened to me. Fantasia 2000 was one of the first movies I ever saw. And this animation, with flying whales, going into the clouds: it makes little sense now. But at that age: I was mesmerised, and it sounded like magic.
Same! That last build-up crescendo to this segment, even as a kid, was a wonder to behold!! I was a huge fan of the flying whales segment in this movie!
My high school's marching band did a field show called Promise of Winter, and it had this in it! I knew it sounded familiar when I heard this in Fantasia 2000!
Respighi: Roman gladiators in battle Disney: Humpback whales traveling into deep space with the USS Enterprise. Me: should be playing this for the next Winter Olympics

Steve Martin: You know what's amazing is that many of these musicians are playing for the very first time, thanks to "Steve Martin's Two-week Master Musician Home-Study Course". More about that later. Hello and welcome to Fantasia 2000. It's been more than sixty years since Walt Disney and his artists teamed with maestro Leopold Stokowski to create a film they titled "The Concert Feature". I think we're all glad they changed the name to "Fantasia". You know, "Fantasia" was meant to be a perpetual work in progress. Every time you went to see it, you'd experience some new pieces, along with some old familiar favorites. But that idea fell by the wayside until now. So let me turn things over to the great Itzhak Perlman, who, I have just been informed, plays the violin. Well, so do I, big deal. Could I have my violin, please? [is handed a violin] Steve Martin: Ahh, thank you. All right, boys, let's... [bow slips from his hands] Steve Martin: Oh! Oh, sorry. Could I have another stick thingy, please? Oh, and camera back on me. Camera back on me. Ca... Am I done? Itzhak Perlman: When you hear a title like "Pines of Rome", you may think of tree-lined streets and romantic ruins. But when the Disney animators heard this music, they thought of something completely different. @@Princess_-gp3ep Roger Ebert actually hated the celebrity introductions in the movie because he thought they didn’t really fit in to the concert movie spirit

As a kid, I was mesmerized by this whole entire sequence in this movie. As soon as the whales started flying, no joke, I wanted to fly with them. I remember this segment being so badass and majestic!
This is the whole segment used by Disney for Fantasia 2000, but it is an abridged version of the entire "Pines of Rome" composition. Fantasia 2000 uses about 10 minutes of the composition, less then half of the 22 minutes.
