@@Bettyboop08 that's not true. They didn't stand because she's a soulful singer, even though they were taken back they didn't know how to process it.... No one could sing like Fantasia back then or even now
And performed "I'm Here" at the 2024 Oscars. Fantasia is already getting Oscars predictions and the movie doesn't come out until Christmas 2023. She is a front runner for Best Actress.
I can almost feel all her ancestral spirits stand up to be counted as she sings! That voice doesn't come by accident. It's willful and I'm privileged to bare witness to it.
Renoir Fantasia deserves to be recognized. She is so much more than a singer or entertainer. She is an educator too every time she takes off her shoes starts to stomp and wail. I've never seen such heartfelt African celebration style dancing and singing. I'm in awe.
What I've always admired about Fantasia is that she doesn't just sing, she emotes. You literally see her tearing up towards the end, struggling to sing, "I'm beautiful." That's what makes her renditions different from others. She really feels the words she's singing and her delivery takes you on that journey with her.
I listened to this right before I defended my dissertation today, 10/31/2023. Such a soul-stirring and motivational song for Black women. Thank you, Fantasia! ❤❤❤
I hate when someone sings their heart out and then the audience sits there and gives a tepid clap like they too good to get up and give the person the standing ovation that they deserve!
@@Dion_Mustard actually the people u name love Fantasia even the queen herself invited Fantasia to do many tributes to her and she sang at her furneral
@@treyjones1958 they're just being nice those other artists, trying to keep their names relevant with the modern day singers, doing it for attention etc. patti labelle and gladys knight would never have welcomed fantasia into the studio back in the 60s.
I think they should have picked Fantasia to sing this song when Oprah was honored at the Kennedy Center. Jennifer Hudson is great, but Fantasia is in ANOTHER CATEGORY. She doesn't need two, three notes to move you ... she just needs ONE, the first one that comes out of her mouth. Period. Every single word she sings has a lifetime of meaning behind it. What a gift!
I think you're right. I haven't gotten to see Fantasia act (or even sing that much, either), but I get the impression she really digs in to the soul and meaning. I certainly admire Jennifer H., but I also look forward to seeing her grow as an actress (including acting songs like this one), because she has much more depth to find, if she can.
Yes, I saw her too in 2008. I had just come back from Iraq the year before, and watching her on Broadway in The Color Purple is what gave me a true appreciation for her unmatched gift from God above. She did the same in the movie that I was blessed to be able to watch on Christmas Day. I am thankful to have the pleasure of witnessing one of the greatest vocal talents on history to perform live on Broadway and then reprise the role in the movie.
This Girl is Amazing !......... she has so much range and tone quality .....music industry is on this light skinned bullshit!!! this girl is a cold blooded DIVA with REAL Talent !!!
Her tone is ugly as hell, she’s a technical beast, but I can only take so much of that abrasive nasal tone. I much prefer her as a character in a show where that tone is broken up between other performers, but I can’t do a full album of just her. She moves me with her soul, but there’s nothing she can do about that God given tone, it’s a love it or hate it type of thing.
No disrespect to Cynthia Erivo or Jennifer Hudson, who are both AMAZING singers, but Fantasia just SELLS the song and sings it with such CONVICTION-- she was the perfect choice to play Celie!
To compare this version to her Broadway performance is ridiculous. It is obvious that she was asked to sing as herself in this video. Watching her last Broadway performance gives me chills every time I watch it. There is something about the way she carries herself and how there is a clear shift in her body language as she progresses through the song. POWERFULLY MOVING is how you describe the level of vulnerability and triumph she gives this song.
@@Eric407851 yes indeed. Sad that in our own community is what can mess our girls up. Most ppl are told that dark skin is ugly. I'm light skinned and my mom always said I was ugly. I have four granddaughters, all different shades of black. And we tell them they are beautiful in the skin they are in. We teach them to lift each other up. Fantasia has and will always be my girl...
Tears. This woman is an inspiration to all who have had those X's by their names.Being told you're ugly, to black,to fat, to skinny, to poor, to white, your nose is to long, to big, unwed mother, ex con, high school drop out, etc.. She stepped out on faith and said why not me. I know I have these problems and I know what people say about me, but I'm here for a reason. Sharing her gift, to lift up hearts to inspire.Glad she saw her own worth and not let folk stop her.. Yes TASIA you are HERE!
I love the "realness" in her voice. You know this song is personal. It's like this was her reply when she heard what someone said about her. I get chills hearing her sing.
I love her interpretation of this.. she is venerable, strong and feels what she is singing. Which is what you need for that character “Celie” . The passion and the venerable is what stood out to me from the rest. Bravo Fantasia
I saw Fantasia on broadway, and it's definitely a powerful memory. There were times when the show seemed more than she could carry, and then moments where she was the only thing I cared about in the universe. But, the joy of this performance is the larger picture. Fantasia Barrino was not supposed to be here. Her life story and the things that happened definitely hurt her ability to share her art earlier/sooner/better. There isn't much she can do about that, except she can infuse all of that into this moment. Cause, one of the joys of musical theater, is the ability to turn a song or lyric into a moment. A great song in a show is never just a song, and wherever and whenever you carry that song, you carry a character, a story, an arc, or just a moment in a person's life that feels real. Fantasia ain't Celie, but somehow, when she sings her about her children, about the things she can still hold on to, about the hard and easy days, about the beauty in her that it took some hard days to finally see? That's not words on a page but an entire life she can communicate in a few minutes of singing. A friend of mine saw Fantasia on broadway multiple times and said that often she would be crying through most of the show. However, she could still communicate the character and emotion of the moment well enough to make an entire audience of New Yorkers bawl their eyes out 8 times a week. And the fact that I still cry every time I come back to this video a decade later? That's some amazing stuff.
Everyone has to realize that she was playing cellie, and all the thing that she endured when she was married to Mister...Fantasia puts emotions in her song, because she can relate to cellie
The vocal coaching she gleaned while performing in this play shows in her later performances of this song. Her mid belts and control intensified, and her resonance and clarity improved.
I agree. Her Broadway experiences have done wonders to her vocals. How Fantasia approaches a song now is totally different than how she would have Pre-Broadway. That’s what I’m excited to see in her reprisal in the film adaptation, how she will approach the role all these years later, I just know whatever it looks like it will be beautiful.. again.
Jennifer and Fantasia both are power houses. Vocals beyond anyone one of our imaginations. They are both in the same category as Whitney Houston. They are all different in their talents, but not one is more talented than the other. I appreciate each and every one of their voices for what they are and that's utter music to my ears. I can sit and listen to anyone of the three women I mentioned for hours on end, and still want more. Bless those vocals.
NO ONE DOES THIS SONG JUSTICE BUT HER!! NO ONE CAN SING IT LIKE HER, JUST LIKE NO ONE CAN SING "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU "BY THE ONE ONLY WHITNEY. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE LOVE LOVE FANTASIA!!!!!!!
Let this be a testament to what happens when you REMAIN the person you are. Because there will be a day reckoning you wont see coming. BRAVA FANTASIA, the 2023 remake is just as astounding!
If Fantasia decided to sing the phone book, I'd listen to her sing every name on every page, along with the addresses and phone numbers. ...and it'd be the best damn phone book I ever heard.
