Now imagine the Dumbledore family in the early 1910s living with a unstable obscurial inside their home having to be extremely careful for not to unleash her darkness and literally kill everyone.

But then I hope that she didnt happen to create an obscurus because its kinda odd that two family members are obscurials from the same family. You know, not that its impossible but if I were a writer I would not put one rare occuring subject of my story into two people of the same family when one of them was mentioned before, which developed the history to a character but now another one appears out of nowhere. You know just to scatter the odds of the rare subject.
I like how the obscurus doesn't seem to have a certain state of matter. Its some dark mist, then black tentacles, then some kind of liquid. As if it wouldn't know what to be or as if its body wasn't able to catch uo with its movements.
Magic can be thought of as imagination made real. An Obscurus could then be thought of as a tormented child's rage, fear, desperation and sadness made into a real physical force. Since its raw emotion without clear though, it doesn't really know what it wants to be, just to lash out at world hurting it. It might be a monster, but they are perhaps the most tragic ones in a long time.
1:35 - 1:45 Just watch all of these truly extraordinary magical abilities (at least for humans-- obviously magical creatures such as goblins and house elves can perform far more amazing feats of wandless magic), and yet neither President Picquery nor anyone was even remotely surprised at how Graves could do such things. I know that he was Grindelwald in disguise, but Graves himself must have been quite powerful to not have been caught for such a long time.

Now @3:20 when the obscuris is relatively small and not crashing into anything. Credence is in there trying to calm down, fighting to take back control, trying to suck ALL THAT MAGIC back inside his body mass. But completely unable to.
Thank you for compiling these clips. I was trying to explain to a friend what the Obscurus was like, and couldn't find a good picture or clip until I found this. This was a fantastic example without giving away too much plot.
Well obscurials have reasons behind them. Hating your own magic and not being able to handle it. That's what creates an obscurial. It's like the physical form of a mental illness that destroys everything and is out of control. If harry had that it wouldnt be the same story anymore

Harry wasn't abused for his magic and the durselys are frighted of magic. JKR confirmed that to becoma obscurus a young witch or wizards has to be abused for using their magic and suppress their magic to form a obscurus.
No wonder this is an extremely powerful Obscurial. He’s a Dumbledore and a host who lasted into his 20s when nearly every other obscurus died before reaching age 10. I’m not sure how wild Ariana would have been had she not been killed. Similar?
What if you could make your (and/or someone else's) obscurus into a Horocrux. I mean in order to create a horocrux you need to split your soul and the only way to do that is to kill someone. But could, say credence, operate a wand in order to perform the killing curse? If so, what would happen to him? One can only speculate. If newt were able to "capture" an obscurus after it killed its host, surely someone else could do the same? Just thinking about what a already powerful wizard or witch could do with that kind of destructive power is scary. Is it even possible to create a horocrux from something that doesnt have a physical form? I mean both nagini and the diary of Voldemort are things that are physical. Could you say the same for the obscurials when they are morphed into the black smoke/ash form? Or for the one newt has in its bubble?
Obscurus dies along with its host. Newt put it into a containment field to keep it alive. It can't possess a new host, it would die if released from the bubble. So, it's not very reliable as a horcrux.

The Obscurus/Obscurial was perhaps the best addition to the Potterverse ever. Dumbledore and Light Side folk talk a lot about Dark Arts being bad and corruptive and whatnot, and all we got was Moldybutt and his Dead-Ass Kissers talking shit about Blood Purity like KKK wannabes. Then you see this shit. Mistreat a Wizard bad enough and they turn into a fucking Heartless Uroboros, no Disney cutesy aesthetic + extra on the eldritch Lovecraftian Horror that makes Dementors and Boggarts look like fucking babies. Magnificent and terrifying.

But here is the thing, Harry could never be an Obscurus, and here is why: On her official website F.A.Q., author J. K. Unlike Harry, all three of them were aware of the existence of magic. So here is why I think Harry could never develop an Obscurus and become an Obscurial.
This could be far fetched but I wonder if an Obscures represents someone that snaps because they are forced to hide who they really are. A example would be someone in the closet due to their strict, religious environment. Credence was in a strict, religious environment via magic phobia and when he couldn’t hide himself anymore he snapped. All the self loathing, hiding, yearning to be free just exploded from within and that’s why his magical form (in this case) was darkness.
aeris44 Nope. Obscurial is the person who carries an obscurus. An obscurus is like magic gone wrong. It may have come from a child but the child died after keeping in the obscurus. Basically dark magic that killed it's human host.
The Obscurus came from an abused 7 year old girl from Sudan (for having magic). Newt managed to capture it in the bubble before it dissipated. He felt bad for the girl and tried to save her before it ripped her apart, but failed and the Obscurus is all he has to show for it. It is part of why Dumbledore has a soft spot for Newt.
The second one and when they were with Seraphina wasn’t an obscurus. It was Grindelwald’s magic against the aurours. And when Mr. Graves (Grindelwald) took Newt’s case. You also missed some as well.
That was literally Grindlewald using a form of his Diabolica fire against them. Same sound and look. He is literally that powerful. He would absolutely obliterate Voldermort if he wanted to. People have no idea.
Is it just me where in the scene where graves is walking up to credence while he's in obscurial form if you listen to the shouting it sounds like Harry Potter screaming cedric
I love the clip and the obscural concept, But it made no sense to tell the audience rules about obscurals (uncontrollable, don't live past 13 or so), and then in the same movie have a character break all the rules.
I think a common trend we see in the wizarding world universe is that there are rules and actions, but there are always special cases to some of them, which increases the sense of mystery. An example, anyone hit by the avada kedavra curse would instantly die, no one would survive it, that's the rule. However, Harry Potter is a rare case because he survived it. No one knows how exactly, and the thing about love that Dumbledore explained was only a theory. Even he admitted that he could be wrong (which he wasn't as we see later) Similarly, an obscurus only lives up to 10-13 years as the rules state for them. However, Credence is a rare case because he survived for so long. No one in the universe seems to know why so it increases the sense of mystery for the audience. Only thing that's different is that at least Dumbledore had a speculation why and that came true, but no one seems to know how Credence survived this long, or at least that I know of.
It doesn’t look entirely like smoke either. It kind of resembled the Aether (Reality Stone) from Thor: The Dark World, almost fluidic. What is interesting is that Credence turning into it does resemble how Death Eaters turning into shadowy smoke and that Voldemort demonstrated being able to conjure a similar shadowy smoke in The fifth and eighth Harry Potter films, as if he had somehow utilized magic to simulate the powers of the Obscurus. If so, he would have successful weaponized the Obscurus as Grindewald failed to do.
Death Eater Smoke is simply Voldemorts flight ability which was unique to Voldemort and Snape in the books but in the films they just gave it to everyone.

It's heavily hinted at that Ariana Dumbledore was an Obscurial and accidentally killed her mother. It is also the reason why she didn't attend Hogwarts.
Isn't defensive shielding a very common theme in sci-fi and fantasy, not easily attributable to one work? Or is there something specific about the shielding that makes it unique to the star wars universe?
though if the Dursleys were a lot more abusive with Harry in their attempt to stamp out his magic, he would have become an Obscurial and wiped Little Whinging off the map
@@StevenKissingeri guess first of all he is so strange cause he was brought up in an agressive traumatizing environment, where any inappropriate step was punished, there was no love and respect and no expression of emotions was allowed.
An Obscurus is a parasitic entity that is created inside a host or Obscurial. They usually happen when a witch or wizard have a self-loathing of their magic. Most cases this happens from abusive households.
there hasn't been mention of an Obscurial ever being successfully cured of their Obscurus most Obscurials do not live past the tender age of 10, those that do would still be doomed to have a greatly shortened life span with the proper training, it is possible for Obscurials to control their Obscurus and weaponize it to use as a supplement in magical duels, but doing so would only hasten their already short life span and cement their premature death
