Tom, I don't miss a video of yours, thank you for sharing. I also love your book and need to buy the other. FYI, my good friend who made the machining a trade as opposed to the hoby it is for me, started a shop in the seventies and was doing the machine work making the "Wee Blocks" for years. He is still in business, makes parts for the company I own and has been my mentor from our days in highschool to this time. He regularly kicked my ass at anything we did and it was shop class where we met. Meaningless to all but me I suppose. I remember those Wee Blocks when I think they were a new thing.

I made a V-block very much like the first one you described. Only differences were the interior v angle was 120 degrees to allow for larger diameters in a smaller configuration. Also, I drilled and counterbored screw holes for a 1/2" Socket Head cap screws in the center of the V way, and through the length of the block. This allowed attachment to my large angle plate or milling tombstone at any rotational angle. It was made out of 4140, hardened and ground to perfection, approximately 4×5×6" in size. It would hold up to a 7" diameter. Now since I've retired, my tools are making someone else's job easier and accurate.

Funny you mentioned using V blocks to inspect roundness of features. Joe Pie just put up a two-part series on the very issue of cutting a grossly out of round part, that still would inspect within about .005 TIR when rolled under a dial test indicator on a surface plate.. he mentioned that using a bee block would show the lobed geometry

Hardened parts are less conducive of magnetic lines for the same reason we use a magnet to tell us when two metals are at the correct temperature for force welding. The crystalline matrix is quenched into a state that is closer to non magnetic than the annealed parts are. Shop metallurgy 101 But you're a very busy guy Tom. We can't be expected to remember everything at all times . Cheers :)

Anyone interested in the idea of roundness being difficult to check should look into shapes and solids of constant width. It will make it instantly clear why two point measurements are no good for determining roundness. Here's a good video by Numberphile on the topic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cUCSSJwO3GU.html

If you have a 3D printer you can print a set very quickly and be the life of the next party! (I keep a set on my desk for customers to play with, though the real reason is to help me spot the engineering and metrology types who know what they are.) You can also make the linear version that those are based on, called Reuleaux's Triangles (best stab at the spelling), with a lathe and three equal lengths of hex stock. I also have a set of those on my desk with holes drilled almost through them so they double as individual pen holders.

It probably really depends on which matal you specalize in. Auto makers are going to higher strength steel that stamp well, so cars can be thinner, lighter, cheaper, higher gas milage. Aeroplane makers also want lighter, stronger but do more titanium, aluminum alloys and are moving towards carbon fibre that gets glued together. Jet engines and rockets want the same thing, but in super high temp alloys that have high heat strength. Machine tool tooling sintered carbides with longer edge life, better finish. There is lots of RnD going on if you get into the right companies. Even govt research is still lead by companies funding and joint ventures with companies.

Stay away from Tesla. They are at a point where they're losing money every Q. Tesla can't figure out who is in charge and they came figure out how to turn a profit. They're busy making farting features and developing new cars, instead of improving the products they have. Tesla is not a viable business model when they have to constantly look for an a new influx of capital every year. They're also really trying to move development operations out of the U.S., because they don't want to pay US engineers.
