Classic sketch from the mid-90s show
I'm looking to increase my collection of full episodes of this - I presently have about a dozen BBC episodes, and all of the ITV episodes. If you have anything to trade, please give me a PM and we'll discuss it.

There right he was shite, a classic example is in escape to victory, when the allies are 4-0 down, as soon as Pele gets taken off, they played much better, they brought it back to 4 - 3, before he came back on.

More than that, they'd have f-ing escaped at half time if he hadn't help convince them to go back out...he'd have looked really stupid if they'd all ended up getting shot :)

I heard that Pele played in two matches simultaneously. He scored hattricks in both matches.

Did you know this? Pele had 2 degrees of myopia (only corrected at 31 years old, with an eye retina operation) and never using contact lenses (like for eg, Romário or Kaká) while playing.

i think that maradona was a soccer player "for the tribune".... he wasnt headed the ball, plñayed with one leg... and was world champions only one time...... pele was a complete soccer player.... he palyed with both legs..... headed, dribling, goal, freekick, etc. he hit 1309 golas en many diferetns competitionss... it not comparable to maradona... Pele played until his 40s.... maradona retired with 35.... maradonaa.... was drogadict.... pele never touched the drugs.....

@kisbie Theres a complete rundown of his goals and games in an recent autobiography - included in the 1000+ goals are friendlies for club and country, exhibition games and games for his Army team. Oh and they got the 1000 goal that was much celebrated wrong - later tallying up found to be about his 1003rd - guess the brazilians didnt have Statto in the 50s and 60s :D

@awaitlightning All good calls. I think Michael Ricketts should definitely be in there. Also Massimo Taibi, Winston Bogarde, Taribo West, Marco Boogers, Viola, Luke Chadwick, Serginho, Tomas Brolin, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Dalian Atkinson. Big Ron and Drillo Olsen as the gaffers with David and Frank as celebrity sub keepers, just for old time's sake. (Graham Poll could ref - with his pioneering three strikes rule of discipline.)

Wasnt that the sketch that started off the hounding of Jason Lee? I distinctly remember a Forest fan having a letter read out on the next show saying how Jason Lee was great, and from there it became a running joke.

@awaitlightning If David and Frank can't get this show back on the telly, they could perhaps do a few 'Hall of Fame' DVDs, celebrating the most entertaining players and gaffers through the ages. I know the shop shelves are groaning under the weight of those cheap and nasty cash-ins. But those two would be able to show everyone how it's done I'm sure, just as Fantasy League is still the unchallenged daddy of football comedy on TV.

David and Frank seem to take great relish in tarnishing the Pele myth. Their podcasts for the 2006 World Cup featured their discovery of the truth about his claim of 1,000 career goals. Wikipedia, incidentally, counts the tally as 'only' 578 goals from 560 competitive games (that's for clubs - Santos and New York Cosmos - and country). But even his biggest fans would have to admit that never playing for a European side helped flatter his final takings, at least a little bit.

@kisbie I thought they were doing a podcast for the world cup but I could be wrong. It'd still be funny if it came back, I mean how good was the Euro 2004 series. That DVD is a great idea. Personally, I think that if they did a DVD celebrating the most mediocre footballers of all time it would quite possibly be the best thing ever. Also agree with tOmme 1981, Soccer Am is a poor man's fantasy football.

@awaitlightning I'm thinking that a Fantasy Football Hall of Fame would be simply a catalogue of as many great/interesting/funny stories, moments and characters from the history of football as possible (though those mediocre players would no doubt be awarded their own special section). It'd be better than all those sodding blooper reels at least. David and Frank also regularly bemoan how too much of football comedy is weighed down by cliched montages of defensive clangers and silly haircuts.

@kisbie Pele appointed himself the greatest? Perhaps I need to remind you that Pele didn't spell his name as G-O-D after the 1970 World Cup; it was the Sunday Times. Pele didn't vote himself "Athlete of the Century". Pele may react this way because no other player gets the flack he does, although most of the moves players go ga-ga over nowadays were invented by Pele. Pele never appointed himself, it was an honour bestowed upon him by those blessed to witness his talent.

I think the point is though, players back in the day weren't subject to the kind of training and dietary needs of (most) professional footballers today. Pele played 40 years ago. If you compare a car from the 60s with one from 2009, you know which car is going to be top trumps. Furthermore, defenders aren't as gullible as they were in the 60s, since Pele just walked past them. Standards have risen in football. Not to mention the weight of the ball and etc.

@kisbie No I will retract, and here's why: Zico played most of his club career in Brazil and he received so many accolades, because he was white. Pele' s career was far more illustrious than Zico's, but time and again he is villified. The Brazilian in Pele's time was probably the best in the world; all Brazil's internationals played in it yet there are morons who try to shoot it down. Let me ask you this: does anyone say that Charlton or Beckenbauer were shite? Think on it.
@boneywasa
@boneywasa 14 лет назад
@kisbie I won't dispute the 1000 goals thing only God knows the truth about that. However I will say this: all the players you have mentioned never have had so many critics trying to make him appear overrated. In fact, they accepted as the greats of the game; every so- called pundit tries to discredit Pele coming up with a plethora of lame- ass arguments. Give the man his due, he was the greatest. Anyone who saw him play in his prime will attest to the fact.

Fabio Capello, in 2014: “I was lucky enough to come up against Pelé with La Nazionale in a match where he was playing for an American team,” he told FIFA.com. “Before that, I'd only seen him on television. “During the game, I saw him do two things that really impressed me, and that's when I realised he was indeed the greatest player of all.”
