Preparedmind101 does the first in a series of Frequently Asked Questions videos in which I describe the process and show the materials I use to customize my Tomahawks. There are many ways to treat and finish a hawk, but this is probably the easiest for people new to modding.

On tomahawks ax handles shovel handles etc I tend to gravitate more to the Tung oil finish Tung Oil when fully cured and dry will leave a protective finish over the wood longer lasting so you don't have to keep reapplying it but ever so often it also has UV filters in it

I did the exact same with my Worksharp on my Rifleman's Hawk. I used a candle to burn the rings in, and I finished it with Tru Oil.

Hey Chris boiled linseed oil is for thinning paints if you paint on canvas...... it should never be used on wood it does no good to the wood everything's been boiled out of it what you want people is Raw Linseed oil! Raw linseed oil is what we use in woodworking I've used it on my longbows for years and I use it for many many years on My guitar fretboards anywhere I've got unfinished wood such as rosewood ebony etc there is no oily no sticky residue and it does not go rancid raw linseed oil is the stuff to use!

Good advice Chris! The only thing that I would add is that if you don't know exactly what you want your hawk to look like you can go to Google or Bing, or whatever your favorite search engine is, and simply do a search for "Cold Steel Pipe Hawk Mods" (or Rifleman's Hawk, Trail Hawk, etc...). Click on the 'images' tab, and you'll find hundreds of pictures of customized hawks. There are also more than a few videos here on YT dedicated to the subject. Some of the modified Cold Steel hawks are truly works of art!

I basically do it the same way except the linseed oil.Will try that.

Raw Linseed is what you want to use Or Tung Oil when subjected to outdoor elements and heavy use tongue oil will put a longer lasting clear protective finish over tool handles and such and has UV filters in it although I'm very partial to Raw linseed oil as well I use it on my longbows and I use it on my guitar fretboards and unfinished woods but you have to know how to apply it I use a series of different grades of steel wool and finish out with quad aught steel wool as I rub in several coats all the wood will take

i'm in the middle of customizing what you could call a hawk, i went to princess auto and bought a short handled hatchet with a hammer on the back. the cutting edge is only about 2 inches so it won't be very effective but at $15 it didn't cost much and lets me do some practice mods without fucking up on a more expensive one

I like to acid dip my bare metal tomahawk heads, then when I quench them in oil they get a really nice dark finish. Than i burn my designs into my tomahawk handle with a torch and a soldering iron. And I coat the axe head and handle with Bees wax. Then after the beeswax I coat the whole handle and the axe head in linseed oil.

I wonder what kind of damage or failure you would get if you fiberfixed the entire handle and maybe even the axehead to it. Maybe a ZGBTV2 vid idea?

I feel that stripping the coating is sacrificing rust resistance and getting less chopping traction is not a good reason to strip a head off
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 10 лет назад
Rust resistance is added by applying gun blue or patina. I dont have rust issues and all are stripped.

So what would be the best way to seat the head snug with out the set screw?
@ringokidd387
@ringokidd387 2 года назад
Say brother the proper first thing the proper wood to steal fit the shape in the fit must be squeaky tight snug to begin with that always works best and then fit it tighter by bumping it into position to where it bites down into the wood

Duh....nobody should be obsessing this much over their axe. It serves no fucking purpose or is hyper-rational bullshit that still serves no purpose. But at least this guy is teaching you something. It's hard to fault what you can learn from him, albeit this is one of the dumbest projects you could prioritize for yourself. edit: I am just fed up with collectors & basically anyone who is ocd on modifying something. We do not need more of that type of culture. *We need principled, practical, potent individuals* who take IN the wisdom of their peers....not their bad habits.

@MichaelGroesbeck

Nonya Bidness Function comes before fashion & we are living in an age of people who go obsess over ridiculous levels of detail to the point where they are mentally unstable. Enjoy nit-picking your way through life rather than finding real solutions to real problems. I offered a solution to the problem we are dealing with at large on a subject that is not a priority. Customize your axe? Really? There are too many of those video's. I was looking for axe techniques. I found SHOW & TELL nonsense. You have a dick. You don't have a brain.
