The years where the health and safety squad had not yet landed. This is how it should be. People had/have got common sense.Great video.

grassy1947 Agree with yourself and the previous commenter. Health ‘n Safety is the biggest bane to productivity in existence, due in no small part to the ‘no win, no fee’ vultures.

Though I am an American, and may never be able to experience the roar of a Deltic, this video has given me that one thing to do on a big, big to-do list.

Great footage, thanks for going to the trouble of uploading. I was at York for the last day of the Deltics in 1982, and still remember the feelings 30 years on.

Oh my God, I was at this sad but AWESOME event too, how is it possible for man to construct such a machine that stirs the soul, with such sound, with such looks, either clean or filthy, a machine that is alive ...... Thank you so much for taking the time to post this!!!!

55 009, got a right bollocking on that locomotive, coming out of Kings Cross my driver Ken Toogood told me to close the window, I did, it came off the runner and he wasn't best pleased. Went to Leeds with no window, messed me hair up a bit, he had none ! Bless you Ken !

Absolutley awesome. I was 4 at the time this was filmed and unfortunatley didnt attend. My dad (who is currently a high ranking member of the DPS) assures me that I saw all 22(via my buggy) before their demise. Added to favourites and thank you Johnandrewwood for posting such epic material. TULYAR!!!!

@johnandrewwood It was indeed the first Deltic to be preserved. In fact, it was earmarked for preservation and repainted in two tone green livery several months before it was actually withdrawn from regular service.

If I remember rightly (from ,y days at English Electric Traction Division - now ling gone) The Deltic Engine was originally designed as a marine engine whicn somehow got side tracked into a railway loco. Pity there were so few made.

Not seen any footage of this day before, so thanks for posting. Unbelievably sad occasion. I looked for myself, but no sign. I've never seen myself in any of the photos taken here either. Probably a good thing though!

hi there J WOOD,i was there that day with my mate(initials PJG) and very sad it was too.i wouldn't have believed then that they would end up back on the main lines.must save up for a deltic driving experience run but can't really get up to much on preserved railways. i always said it would be the main line or bust but that will never happen.thanks for posing.

@johnandrewwood It's actually one of six Deltics still in existence, the others being 55 009/15/6/9/22. It wasn't the first preserved diesel working on British Railways; the first preserved diesel to do so was Warship no. 821 Greyhound, which worked from Laira to Didcot Railway Centre light engine and under its own power on 23 May 1973.

Blimey, I remember going to that open day when I was fourteen years old ! Couldn't see myself though. There are six deltics within half a mile of where I live parked in the barrowhill round house, its nice so many were saved !🙂👍

@Strawberry7Lynn No, that is one that is still around, and when you see it moving in the video it is returning from Doncaster to York Museum. I think this was the first preserved diesel working on British Railways.

It's a shame that the Deltics lasted only 20 years in service - they are amazing diesels. Still, looking on the bright side, the 125s that replaced them are an icon of the greatness of Britain's Railways.

@delticfilmarchive don't want to see??? goodness, man, this is *history*! In more senses than just one! I was seventeen years old, and lived there (in Donny) at that time. Heavens! Your film shows the time, how strangely dated everything was - which you can only see looking back now. Wonderful film. I'd be careful about throwing such stuff out. This has real value IMO. I emigrated from England, BTW, 20 years since.

The unit was "borrowed" from work so I only did this and a trip over the S&C with Sir Lamiel, apart from a few local bits.

Id like to amend my last post when I said I wasnt there that day. Just spoken to my dad,and I was there after all! He has a photo of me having just placed my hand on the buffer of 09 and proudly showing off my greasy palm to the camera! PS, If anyone knows him, Bob Riley was with us too! I LOVE DELTICS!!!

Has anyone else noticed that the horns of a Deltic sound like the start of the "The Last Post"? Very apt.

There is some more but this is the best as the exposure was knocked back a lot if there was much sky behind the engines, making the result very dark. Also had a problem in that a Deltic hooted just as I was crossing in front with my 2 year old son, causing a few tears.

@mruresm8 We British have always been able to do this, be the Spitfire, Concorde or the E Type Jaguar. Machines that are pleasing to the eye, yet with brute force.

@florianska6 Main problem was there were no routes really useful for such a powerful engine. It would have meant restocking depots and thein lies a major problem. Parts. They were becoming a nightmare for BR to aquire. On the costs front its interesting to note that considering the mileage they did in '75 they ran out at the cheapest diesel to run at 8p per mile. The other problem was BR had decided on the HST as a replacement which was faster, more competative over distance with the car and air

@Strawberry7Lynn Hi there, this loco is currently undergoing heavy overhaul at the NRM in york, it had been stripped down, but the company doing the job went bust & many of her parts went missing but the overhaul is currently going well, i think if you look up the KOYLI (Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 55002) group you might get some info or The National Railway Museum, hope this is of some help.

@Strawberry7Lynn Hi there, got a good friend who is co-ordinating this project, if you need to know anything about this beauty let me know & i will get the info, there's six left & they are all very much alive or in the process of being given more life, always good to talk to a Deltic lover....Respect. By the way, im me (Tony) Jimmy's me son. Cheers.

@bluebus270 Actually the Concorde was a joint project with the French. That aside, I always thought that Concorde was rather elegant and graceful in the air, rather like the Spitfire; I certainly wouldn't ascribe the term 'with brute force' to either of them.
@40022laconia

1 reason why they were withdrawn after 20 years was because of how much they cost to run and maintain

@delticfilmarchive Well over 7000 people have now seen this one, and judging by the people out today to see 55022, the Deltic mystique is still very strong. Maybe the titles don't come up on searches, try something different. But never give up!

Fifteen. The other seven had already been scrapped, of which two - 55 014 and 55 018 - had been broken up only the previous month.
