Farmall 400 Plowing with a 4x14 Fast-Hitch Plow. Antique farm tractor in operation on the farm. Vintage farm tractor in operation on the farm. #farmallfanatic #farmall #redpower
Plowed many acres with our 400 w/4bottom fast hitch plow. It had no trouble with it. The 1st time i drove it doing tillage work, i had it at about 3/4 throttle. When i came around next time,my dad jumped on with me, pulled the throttle down & said " this is an International it's made to work hard. Pin her ears back!"
Back in the 60's had a 400 and a 460, both gas ,the 400 would walk all over the 460, Spent many hours on the 400, Love the sound of all the 4 cylinder FARMALLS , MUSIC 2 YOUR EARS!! Thanks for the memories of RED POWER
I pulled a Deere 4-14 trailing plow with our '54 SM-TA that our Deere R diesel could barely pull. SM-TA did it in 2nd. Was the last 16 acres of old corn ground we couldn't get over with the R. Following spring we had a 450 gas with fast hitch, and a 4F-43 plow almost identical to FF's, except our's had a clamp-on land wheel on the right side of the plow towards the back. We had a home-made front weight bracket made from the cylinder mounting bracket from a CASWELL loader, big 3/4" thick steel about 5 inchs wide, stuck out ahead of the grill about a foot, had two 145# wheel weights and had an angle iron saddle between grill and wheel weights for two 50# scale weights, plus the bracket weighed over 100#. It really kept the front down, before the front weights, shift from low side of 5th to high side of TA and the front tires would come up over a foot off the ground. The 450 pulled the 4F-43 4-14's in old corn or bean ground in 3rd gear with ease, old hay ground or hog pasture in 2nd. We had an 80 with a lot of hills, some fairly steep and long and those gave the TA some exercise. Had one clay I actually had to pull the TA back going downhill. Neighbor farmed it with Us, plowed with a Allis D-19 gas and 4-16's Allis semi-mounted plow, He was shifting back and forth between Hi and Lo side but that break in power with the Allis Power Director made for some great WHEELIE'S. Yes, the furrow side rear wheel on a FARMALL with Fast Hitch should be slid out 5-6 inches so the 4F-43 plows with the full width of the front bottom. Dad was kinda lazy and ran M&W direct axle duals all spring except on the furrow wheel of his big tractor when plowing, so we always only cut about an 8 inch slice with the front bottom. The MIDWEST plow harrow became the "MUST HAVE" accessory for all farmers but they didn't work well with fully mounted plows, a neighbor talked Dad into trying a CASE 4-14 trailing plow which had a Midwest harrow, made disking plowed ground as smooth as running down a concrete highway.
The Super MTA is rated about the same as a John Deere R, plus you have the added kudos of the torque amplifier. A W-9 or WD-9 is more tractor than the John Deere R. They have no problem pulling a 4 bottom plow in our heavy clay soil...
That was great, 😂😂😂. Didn’t even break a sweat. Loved it for sure. The only way it could have been better was if I was on the tractor plowing, 😂😂😂😂. Sounds great, and looks great. Thanks for sharing and I'll see you later.
I never took my eyes off the screen but somehow I managed to miss the part Where you adjusted the plow looked to me like he walked right into the field and went to plowing. Tractor seem to do fine as far as I'm concerned. Well done, my friend. 🙂
My Dad used a Farmall 400 Diesel with an Oliver 4x14 pipe plow, back when I was growing up. You know, I don't think I've seen ANY videos of Oliver pipe plows, and, I've looked SPECIFICALLY for them, another I haven't seen is the first corn picker dad had, an IH 1P, and, I've looked for videos of them too.
Those little Farmalls are great tractors. They have been used for everything under the sun. I've seen them with plows, discs, mowers of all kinds, buckets and blades. Our school district had one for mowing the high school grounds and the football field. Several generations of kids seen that thing in action. It was still going strong when I graduated. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was still running.
Another gem FF, some folks listen to the ocean, some listen to sounds of nature…I’ll take the sound of a Farmall plowing to soothe and relax the soul😁take care and great job💥🇺🇸💥
I really enjoyed the video! It sure did the job better than I thought. My grandpa's big tractor was a 100 HP and he used a 4 bottom plow but he was plowing some steep hills and never liked to overwork his equipment. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
I think I like your 3 bottom setup just a little better than the 4 bottom combo, but it actually did a job good enuf for who its for!! Can I get a REDPOWER shoutout?? lol
Looked like it was pulling it pretty good. I've always heard it's about 20 hp per bottom but now that's in this heavy red clay down south. I enjoy that.
A great video showing what a 400 can do we always pulled a 3 bottom with our 400 but I always knew it would take a 4 bottom with no problem because our farmall 300 could pull the 3 bottom boom
Can't believe you doubted her, my grandpa always Said international and Farmall tractors will run out of traction long before power. Still wishing could have gotten his 450 diesel from his estate.
When a kid. We plowed with a Super M 4×14 trailer type. 2nd gear in sod. 3rd gear in cornstalks. It had the fire crater sleeves and pistons. My cousin had a 770 Oliver. We tried that on that plow. Didn't work out very well
As long as you aren’t bouncing that plow around going down the road. Just bought a 460 and a 4 bottom plow at my neighbors sale yesterday. Fast hitch has definitely been booger welded a time or 2 lol
Excellent video Geno :) also all years was in farm with my dad & uncle only see 95 % time used 4 row plow that was 3 point hitch and in 1993 used 6 plow draw bar one has adjustable with 2 hand trigger ones ! But amazing learning on both them and was fun with Red Power Boom 💥 of 1968 International 624 A German Desiel motor tractor !
Yeah, you're right. The 400 is a beast. It'll last forever as long as it's not NEGLECTED. We've had that discussion before. A little grease will take care of that rust. No need to wire brush it. BOOM!
You'll be there at your auction grinding your teeth and watching from above.... pacing back and forth... saying I paid more than that 50 years ago.... them are the good steel ones from 1952.... lol On a side note. Have you ever addressed wobble? I came across an M for 800$ and the seller says wobble in. High gear
According to tractordata, the 400 and the 460 had the same horsepower. The 400 was a 264 4 cylinder and the 460 a 221 6 cylinder. My family had a 300 as the main plow tractor with pull type 3-16 - had no problems at 8 in cut on Iowa black dirt. But did bog down when you got into some clay.. our 1946 H only pulled a 2-14. Often had both in the same field - 300 doing 1-2 mph faster than the H.
They are roughly the same horsepower, but the 400 has more torque and more weight. I made a video showing the 560 is the replacement of the 450. The 560s are constructed similarly to the 400/450 series... But the 460 is lighter, they are more of a replacement for the 350. But the 300 is considerably more tractor than an H. They're not an M but not far from it. Same with the 400s. They are not a W-9 but not far from it.
I feel like a lot of guys see those fast hitch prongs and think they are some kind of weird 3 point adapter. I think you’re right that you’ve seen them at auction before.
450 was replaced by 560 functionally in the lineup, and I could see how people thought that when they came out. Ive heard of guys that say their 450 out pulls their 560 even, so no way a 460 bests one. I like our gas 706, but it has a few hundred more rpm to work with than a 560 or 656. The 6's seem to like to be wound tight more than the big old 4's
People whated their 450 back not because of hp but because rear end Problems because of Straight 6 torque. IH fixed the problem With a huge recall but the Damage was already done
That looks like a job for a hydraulic press or a 24 pound sledge? I would have liked to see if the bottoms shined up equal. The back three bottoms looked equal. The first bottom seemed to be a bit narrow. But would it be worth the time to move the tire a couple inches?
Better get a moving Farm Fan if you want to get something in the ground. Near record high temps and very little rain in the forecast for the Mid Atlantic region.
Noticed that easy on easy off ,fast hitch Ferguson sold hitching backward and everything is off and on ,off and on for a old man like me ,to tired to work.
