This reminds me of an incident in the 80's when my uncle, my grandfathers son-in-law all by himself took out 3 of the four tractors that we used on the farm. He decided to go up into the woods with the JD 4010 and tow out some logs, he coasted on out of the woods with a chain full of logs, and then crossed a ditch snapping the front wheels off the 4010, then he went and got the AC 5040 and tried to tow the 4010 out of the ditch, before he burned the clutch up he also dismounted a rear tire and destroyed the sheet metal on the right side of tractor. He got discouraged for a few hours and decided to go back and burn up the starter on the 5040, which he did by jump starting it with the 6 volt AC 3 wheel 1940's tractor that we used to just tow a trailer around. He burned up the entire charging system on that old 6 volt, but not before burning up the starter on the 5040 because he didn't know that he ran the tank empty and the tractor wouldn't start,...so he just kept a crankin'. Needless to say, when my grandfather got home from his full time job on second shift he came home to a disaster,......and it was all design flaws,..no operator error at all,....(if you ask my uncle). Who by the way was NEVER allowed near another piece of equipment again...EVER!!!

It's all a learning process. Know your machine and the terrain. It's not a skidder. That's why you have a long cable so that you can stay away from obstacles.

I have one of these Farmis and a Mahindra 4025. You probably know this by now, but this is a great setup for pulling up to medium sized trees right out of the ground. Very safe for getting hung trees down. Get a cone for the logs, helps get around stumps, stay out of dirt

I don't think it is a design flaw. Simply put, tractors were not designed to work in the woods without some modifications, the first of witch would be skid plates to cover the bottom. That said. I use my tractor (Kubota) in the woods. Once a branch that I drove over nearly broke off my fuel filter and it is not even near the bottom of the machine. I was lucky that time. My neighbor had a brach go through the radiator of his John Deere and another time he bent the driveshaft. There are so many parts exposed on the belly of ANY tractor, it is not too surprising if you break something.

I've been working on a pond here over the summer of 2018 and will probably get it done this spring. I bought a New Holland T4.75 to do similar work that you are doing. I too damaged the bottom of my tractor (twice) - Hydraulic filter and some drive wiring. I sold the machine with 200 hours and bought a Kubota SVL-95.2 tracked loader. It is the proper tool for the environment. These tractors like my old one and your Mahindra are designed for mowing grass and running hay equipment.

My neighbor took his tractor to the woods. Nothing that a new front spindle and steering cylinder rebuild can"t fix. They are not made for woods. The second you see oil spraying shut off and do not start until fixed. I will say it is a piss poor place for a filter especially on the smaller tractors that are closer to the ground. Thanks for the video.

Looking to buy a 1640 when I came across your video. Same state of Granite, I wonder if they have any aftermarket skid plates for these tractors. I'm going to be pretty much doing what you're doing but the stumps will be ground down or they will be dug up.... I'm more worried about the granite rocks.

These farm tractors are designed for field work. Heading out to the wood is a whole new ball game. Best to have a trail for the tractor and stick to it. Most likely there are other components and hoses that can be damaged from sticks and stumps. Also valve stems are vulnerable to damage. You can gaurd the tractor for woods work but a clean defined trail works best. All farm tractors are the same. Cut the stumps low and use winch to push off the brush. This is a great way to harvest wood.

The hydraulic and hydro-static filters on our New Holland seem to dare things to damage them where they are located. Haven't hit them yet, but I have snapped a valve stem off a rear tire and pulled the PTO engaged sensor wire off.

I have a Kubota L2501 that we bought new just over a year ago. I am very careful to stay out of places like where you had your tractor. With all of the stumps sticking up ,you are operating in a mine field. Your investment in the winch?skidder was a very smart one. Bummer about your tractor. As for the comments about Mahindra being junk, I would disagree. I have some friends here that have them and have been very happy with them. I chose Kubota over Mahindra when I bought because Kubota makes the whole shooting match from the engine to the loader to the cup holder. It is all Kubota. I am extremely pleased with my Kubota but I bet I would have been happy with a Mahindra too. I sure checked them out before I made my purchase. Kubota won this round. Gary Fox, Iowa

We log with a tractor and a skidder. If you put a tractor in the woods, full belly pan, stop and make one. The skidder, we can drive it anywhere, fully protected. As for the Farmi winch, that type system is best for a tractor. We have a hydraulic grapple on the tractor, so I know how that situation is. The grapple needs a winch. The skidder has a grapple and a winch. But, best overall is what you have. You just need to invest in a belly pan. A ruined engine buys several belly pans, and you will still need a belly pan. Plus, broken clutch, brake linkage. Say it breaks off at the rear end housing, then remove the cab and split the tractor to take rear end apart, major job. Or, just get an older tractor. My neighbor uses his every day, truck patches, clears on some land, hunting... He bought the tractor used in 1968, and it's never been back to a pro shop. I put some new tires on it ten years ago. Ditched the generator and.put an alternator. The shifter fork came loose for the PTO. That's it, all simple fixes I did for him.

I'm not a fan of Mahindra but farm tractors are not designed for work in the woods. You've got to be real careful with sticks, stumps rocks etc. or get forestry protection such as skid plates grill guards etc. If you look at a skidder or dozer you will see that all hoses, filters radiators etc are well protected

It's not an "off road tractor" A Timber Jack is an off road tractor. The tree winch is designed to use the tractor PTO from a road or a trail, that's why there's so much cable in the winch. I feel for ya, I've been there and done similar things, sometimes it hurts to learn.

Tractors are not designed to be "off road" work vehicles. In fact, they can be quite dangerous on hilly, rocky, muddy, or stumpy topography. I keep my tractor firmly on my back trail and when I skid trees out, I have chains and ropes to bring everything out to the trail and then skid them out to my work area.

As for the debris....Whatever you don't use in swales and holes can be piled with the loader on your tractor then burnt.

I've been skidding w an older Farmi for the last few months. I've had zero issues w the Farmi. I'm on a smaller tractor, and sometimes with the combined weight of the Farmi attachment and the logs, I can't lift the 3-point off the ground. Have to drop a log or 2 and come back for them. I think the Farmi would be a damn good choice for a 4x4 tractor w proper skid plating and 40hp or more
@Classifiedreality
@Classifiedreality 5 лет назад
Sorry dude, ...but that is why log skidders have plating underneath, cruiser systems like you are using are not designed for stump areas, a single skidder that picks up the butt of the log and then drags the log over the stumps, a good skidder will crawl over the stumps..oh well, I use my teacher the same way you do....full use...thanks for the vid...
@andrewells7441

I think I would have just pulled the trees out one at a time with the tractor, that way you could have steered around the stumps. I use to do it with my 4 runner, I am getting ready to by a Kioti tractor with a grapple loader. once again when its really wet do them one at a time.
@michaelmcclure8673

If your going to use a farm tractor as a small skidder it needs to be modified. Take a look at a skidder you'll see skid plates that are removable. So what your calling a design flaw is not the case.

Most all tractors hydraulic filters hang below the tractor, u have to match your area to where the tractor is working. I'm sure you've figured that out.

Man that is to bad about your tractor. My heart goes out to you but the only people that don't make mistakes are the people that don't do anything. I have worked in the woods for 40 years and I know things happen all the time. As can sometimes be seen on my channel. If you have insurance on your tractor it may cover that if the warranty doesn't. I looked at various tractors and many of them are very vulnerable. Skid plate may save you a lot of money in the long run. Good luck with everything.

That stump was not 5 inches above ground. You should always be careful when running over stumps. I take my chainsaw and cut trees down so the stumps are not sharp or stick out more than few inches above ground. Use some sort garden tool to clean up dirt around the tree to cut it down low as possible. Once you saw oil leak you should have shut off machine immediately

Many have commented that it's not a design flaw, but it actually happened to another customer of my dealer and he was just driving through his pasture. Front wheel dropped down into a dip and his oil filter contacted the ground and the seal broke open. Really needs to be located in a different spot or protected with a guard.

there is about an inch of clearance between the filter and the frame. forget about the stump , it was definitely going to happen anyway going thru all those twigs. i've seen it happen. anything can get lodged in there and just a little bend , the slightest bend on that filter will cause the rubber seal to pop out and leak like a bitch . for a tractor that filter is weaker than the one in your car. Mahindra will tell you that your new tractor comes with non synthetic oil for break in. which is crap. the oil is crap cause it's the cheapest they can find. buy some Rotella and change that shit. if your engine happens to run out of oil it won't get damaged if you catch on time. but it won't cease up just cause it ran out. you can use a Tier 3 oil filter it's one inch shorter and by all means make a skid plate and install an auxillary oil pressure gauge mount it on top of the instrument panel . even if you have home-owners ins.

I have been looking to purchase a new tractor and done alot of research. This is just one more of many things with the Mahindra tractor that shows how cheaply they are made. Poor designs issue many electrical isssues and in some cases like in the back hoe lesser quality of construction with thiner plate steel. I have also seen alot of complaints on how well warranties have been covered.

In my opinion, Mahindra Tractors are really nothing more than a piece of junk, when compared to most all other tractor manufacturers, both domestic and foreign. You would do better to let the dealership keep the Mahindra and buy yourself a John Deere, New Holland, Massy Ferguson or at the very least a Kubota. Mahindra may be a usable tractor for a family garden 1/4 ac. food plot, but it is not built for even small commercial usage. To keep it will only mean that you will have it in the repair shop, far more than in your possession. (i.e.) Throwing away more money in constant repairs, than if you had let the dealership have the tractor back and then financed a good John Deere for yourself.

Sorry to hear about the incident with your tractor. I had a similar issue years ago with our Deer. We have been a Deer family for over 30 years. I bought a Mahindra in November, after evaluating 40 hp from deer, Kubota, and McCormick (Massey is too light) for a snow plowing operation, and work around our homestead. Deer had nothing available in Ontario until late spring. Could barely get there time of day from the local Kubota dealer (even the quote had the wrong name on it). McCormick was a very close second to the Mahindra. We have close to 100 hours on it already, and love it. The dealership has been great to work with. Very pleased with the tractor! Michael

Any major brand tractor will do the job if you select the proper size and attachments. Dealer support and parts availability are most important. I'm a green man but I've got friends of all colors that are very happy with their tractors, including Mahindra.

Sorry but take John Deere off your list. There the cheapest built piece of crap there is... big Deeres 50hp and above are built good... below 50hp and China parts, cast aluminium pto, plastic hood and a front axle that needs repairs every other week... The repairs on the mahindra wont be near as bad... Mahindra tractors built in korea are great.. India build mahindra suck... Same Korean company that builds Mahindra builds RK, ... TYM... Branson...All good tractors... I am a kubota fan, and Kioti fan...I like a tractor that lasts forever and is bulletproof...
