Farming seaweed-eating sheep on a remote island in Orkney

My parents have been farming an ancient breed of seaweed-eating sheep on a remote Scottish island for nearly 50 years. I took a sabbatical from my job as a TV news reporter to help and decided to film a documentary series about their unique lifestyle while I was there. In this first episode, my 64-year-old mum learns to drive the vintage tractor as my dad struggles with dementia. Plus we gather our flock of 600 sheep and then sit amongst the nests of rare Storm Petrels on a unique night-time expedition to a 12th century ruined church.
My parents’ website features all the products they make from our sheep, check it out here: isleofauskerry.com
Please subscribe for future episodes!

When I was a child we had all sorts of animals that needed extra care including a rare breed Soay lamb with tight curly brown wool who had a broken leg. I loved him so much. On walks to strengthen his leg, people would ask "what kind of dog is that?" lol.

Another example of intending to look at just a few minutes of footage and watching the whole thing. I love the pace and the editing plus some of the shot framing (eg the moving tractor tyre in shot) - really nice approach to considering everything that appears on screen. The sound balance is great too, background music not too intrusive. And the quality of the footage is so impressive - please do a small episode on your kit and approach to filming. As a panacea to the hectic life most of us lead your episodes have a true medicinal effect - thank you.

As a Norwegian from the southwest coast of Norway I find the videos about your parents absolutely fascinating. I hope the North Ronaldsay sheep breed will survive. In Norway we almost lost our old sheep breed. If interested you might show your parents this little RU-vid film about our old Norwegian Sheep breed : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1nTvxWbif4g.html

The "short tale breed ? ... Norwegian wild cheep is very common here north in Norway now by the coast ,vesterålen lofoten. .very resistant to the climate here .but never very cold out her by the coast anyway . Villsau which has lineage that dates back to Viking times. These Villsau, with their small, rough and rugged horns still look remarkably like their Viking ancestors. The Villsau lambs have a slower growth rate than the normal variety of sheep.

Years ago I stayed at the Orkney island and saw the wool of those sheep. I am spinning wool myself and never I had such wonderful wool!! It is truly a wonder special breed. I hope the flock can be saved. I would love to buy a fleece from your wool, is this possible? I love your videos. Can you not keep a cottage for holidays? A kind of working holidays, helping the tasks which needs to be done? Thanks a lot for those videos, they are so precious and wonderful! All the best for your mam and your dad! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! We hope the breed can continue to thrive - and thankfully the island of North Ronaldsay still has a large flock of them too so it should do. A holiday cottage would be great, but to be honest it’s so difficult to get out to Auskerry for a lot of the year with bad weather, it would be incredibly stressful trying to manage it for tourism. There would have to be a lot of late cancellations and that wouldn’t be fun for anyone! Take care and thanks for your support ☺️

hello hamish, i,ve just came accross you video,s a couple of days ago & i,ve watched everyone of them & also enjoyed everyone of them too, & i,ve also watched them more than once. I hope you & your family are all keeping well, esp your parents, their way of life is lovely & long may it continue with help from where-ever they can get help from, & i hope they are doing ok, you are all lovely genuine people, also i would love to be able to buy one of your parents sheepskin rugs, & will look into buying one off your mother,s website if thats possible, as i,m on blood thinner,s i feel the cold esp in winter, & nothing is better than natural wool & items made from wool, to keep you warm, i have some sheep-skins on my sofa, & on the floor & real wollen crocet items also on chair,s & over the sofa etc, i still use an open fire for heating & for 5 bags of coal, which is the amount you need for a month , just to have the fire lit just in the evenings for most days, & it is nearly 150 quid, & then there,s logs to buy aswell on top of that, so when your dad says in one of the videos that burning peat saves a small fortune i understand why, & peat is something i,ve never used, but i know people have used it for generations esp in ireland & place,s that were far away from any coal mining areas or any coal reserve,s which ireland & the isle of man never had any coal reserves. & year.s ago coal was shipped daily from a mine near me, in north west england, but apparently over there coal was far too expensive for a lot of people, because of shipping costs, so they burned peat, which if it throws heat out & its free then why not, i look forward to any new videos that you put up, take care,

Y'know, I'm a norwegian viking reenacter. There may be a market for such reddish brown colours in our communities as I understand it is the closest thing to viking sheep. White was unheard of or very rare I'm told. I wouldn't be surprised if you've been approached already but I really believe it could become quite something if there is availability and put reenactors are educated to it
