Farming Sideways-We got some acres knocked out! Things are going pretty good considering all the downed corn. 130 acres with two combines compared to our normal 130 acres with one combine on a good year.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

I had both knees done along with both hips by the time I was 45 (I'm 48 now) and although the hips weren't bad at all (easy, really) but the knees weren't much fun at all. I've had my right knee don't long enough that it's nearly worn out needing to be revised but I'm holding off as long as possible. I certainly wish him well. Stay safe out there.

You weren’t the only lucky one today Zach! Started combining beans today, and found a penny stuck in a pair of gloves when I went to clean off chaff from the machine. I showed Dad and asked if he felt lucky today. Long story short, we stopped a fire before it even started in our machine. I’m keeping that penny on the seat of the combine for the rest of harvest. Felt pretty thankful today.

Happy to see your down mostly going through the header. 5 years ago, we had a late season tornado. Corn snapped at the crown. Would not stand up and pull through. It just pushed up and sat on the snoots. Tried it several directions. Ended up using the bean header. Lots of material went through, but corn came out the top. Good luck with the rest.

Fought downed corn like that with a friend at his farm in the Sacred Heart, MN area several years back. Just a 6 row head on a 9410 Deere with the stalks down sideways. When he was there to help, he had me just barely creeping ahead inching along while he was using a rake like a pitchfork to try to keep that mess off the head by pushing it along when it would build up. When he wasn't there, I got one heck of an up and down the ladder workout just like Zach. That SUCKS! The old farmer with a rake thing was NOT a safe move by any means and although by some miracle that never turned into a dismemberment or fatality of a human, it did eventually end up a dismembered rake when he finally lost his grip on it and the Deere ate it too fast to prevent. Not much distance between the feeder house and the outer row on a rows head-- those stalks and a rake feed in mighty fast. At that point he FINALLY decided to quit that silliness and I was a much happier combine driver. just fighting sideways corn WITHOUT having to worry about trying not to eat an old farmer or his rake.
