I wanted to research sumptuary laws in the city I live in, but sadly, this city was so heavily destroyed and burned down during the 30 Years' War, that its name became a synonym for "to raze a city". Nearly nothing of the medieval documents are left.
Oh, I feel your pain Magdeburgerin! My hometown burned down twice at the end of the medieval, and was plundered multiple times in the 3/4 of the 18th century :(. So having a look at the archives nearby is the way to I guess?
This is a really good question, there is two kinds of distinct dress specific to the clergy, there are vestments to be worn during ceremony and mass and "daily wear" excluding monks, we tend to see long robes to the floor which are belted at the waist, long and short cloaks, they often go bare headed but records do mention black linen caps. Although the idea was modesty, this is not case as many priests accumulated significant wealth and openly displayed it.

I’m a Traditionalist Catholic, and about to enter the seminary, so I know about the liturgical vestments and their history, and also about the Religious Orders habits and their history, but I know little about daily wear for secular priests. Thanks for augmenting my knowledge a bit!
Circa 04:00 onwards. I feel the need to disagree politely! At least in the context I know about ( German lands in the 15th & 16th centuries) citizenship isn't the same as living in the city. It is bound to a certain level of income and good fama of course. Therefore a great proportion of the people living in the city in the named context would not be a citizen. Is this new to you or did you generalize a bit to make it easier to understand?
No no, you are right there, we really don't deal with the early modern period when speaking about the cities. We also tend to generalise fairly heavily to get a short video. Sadly this means that we miss important information.
@@PopulaUrbanum When, in your personal understanding, does the early modern era ( or the era of the early modern city, if there should be a difference) begin? I thought it to begin roughly around 1500, varying of course in matter of region & specific context. Which timeframe would you say your videos/ this video are "valid" for ( sorry for persisting about this time thing! I'd like avoiding missorting, as it bears the danger of spreading misinformation. Especially in the sense of using information from the wrong time ( regarding individual displays, in my case the preparation for a male inhabitant of the lower Rhine area probably 2/4 15th cent of yet not further defined status or profession) Understandably of course! Is there a chance of you making a video about social classes and the finer nuances of society and class ( or did I overlook it?)? Thanks for answering!
@@PopulaUrbanum Circa 55:00 I'm nsure if it might be due to a difference in the local communities, but Dr Melanie Burgemeister @Faser und Stoff, who wrote her PhD Thesis about south German sumptuary laws, stated at a ( German) livestream, she'd see far too few richer clothes on burgers, especially silk should be used more she said. ( regarding ca 1470s). Or is this just a matter of time, in your opinion? I'd also like to add, that in that time, just like you said, it was important to show on the outside, which status one had, so they at times spent even more then they had. What demonstrates this nicely is that in Frankfurt/ Main ( as far as I remember) the Bürger estimated their income themselves in order to pay taxes. First notion might be, nobody'd have paid taxes. But the individual tax levels were public. The Bürger didn't pay less but rather more, to show off, getting fama, I guess.
This is hard to say, drawing lines on dates is and applying them to periods is only helpful for categorizing. Though the 1500's is very certainly where the early modern is accepted to start. We really discuss the culture of Europe between 1250 - 1430 (ish) as we examine the rise of the Urban environment and the middle class. Our own impressions are from 1390 Ghent, and are in the slow transition from a pan European look. We have done one or two videos that have touched on class, but this is more discussing wealth and status. The urban environment tended to have more social exchange and less class systems. ( although again that is a really complex subject)
