Fashion Rules Worth Knowing!
If you’re struggling to put great Fall outfits together then following some of these simple fashion rules will definitely help. Fashion rules often get a bad wrap and sometimes for good reason. But there are some “rules” that really help to give you a framework and a starting point to make sense of the clothes you own. So today I’m sharing the top six “rules” that I automatically follow when creating outfits to love and I think they’ll help you too. I’ve also created a pdf that you can print out and maybe hang inside your closet as a little reminder for next time you’re getting dressed.

Only half way through but I love that you talk about foundation pieces not having to be timeless. I'm tired of seeing 'timeless' wardrobes that all basically look the same. If I wore jeans, a white shirt & a trench coat I would feel so boring, even though these are considered timeless foundation pieces in so many videos. I love dressing with individual personality shining through. I'm a lover of retro & academia styles. Sometimes I look like I stepped right out of the 70s but it makes me feel like myself. Fashion is supposed to be fun.

Rules summary: 1.) 2x2 for smart casual --> paired 2 items that are casual with 2 items that are dressier 2.) Foundation pieces ---> choose one thing to pull together your outfit 3.) The 3rd piece rule ---> add 1 extra item, an element of interest, before before you go out of the door 4.) 3 colour rule ---> limit your outfit only to 3 colours 5.) Big-slim-skin rule ---> 1 bigger item, 1 slimmer item, show a little skin 6.) Fashion uniform ---> basically your favourite go-to-look as the foundation, then add something to it to create an elevated look.

Now over 60, I still plan what I will tomorrow n pack the bag to match. Bring out the shoes that I plan to wear. Guess it’s a habit n I have outfits for emergency when I don’t have time n need to leave the house asap. My son laughed when he watched the movie - The Intern by Robert de Niro n Anne Hathaway. He said to me, that’s your way😂😂😂

I always roll up my shirt sleeves (all long sleeves in fact - unless the weather is really cold). Many years ago I read in a book that the shorter your sleeves, the longer your legs seem. It works every single time for me

😉Mostly, I avoid sleeves altogether. Sleeveless also suits me best in LA's hot climate🥵. I can always add a topper w/sleeves when needed. 💯% YES on rolled, cuffed, or scrunched long sleeves. That's a must for button up/down shirts anyway. Most women's long sleeves in this category are too short, while men's sleeves simply swamp me😂. 🤓Those clear, springy spiral bands (used for key chains) can work great to hold your blazer or cardi sleeve securely in place at the elbow w/o cutting of your circulation too. Besides being more comfortable, as you said it also brings the 👁👁focus right back up⬆️ to our waist. ⏳️As an hourglass w/a slightly longer torso, I need to do everything possible to elongate my legs & bring attention to my smallest feature. 🧰 № 1 tool in my toolbox to improve my vertical line ↕️ is creating that continuous column of color. My fashion formula is monochromatic color〰️matching &/or tonal〰️from head-to-toe. With voluptuous breasts & hips as well as curvy well-developed limbs, I already look visually w-i-d-e-r ↔️ than the average woman🤣. That's why I like to eliminate as many dreaded horizontal lines as I can. Ideally, I'll match my bottom (i.e., skirt/pant) to my hosiery &/or socks, & shoes. Excluding that, nude shoes are also leg lengthening. Visually, they elongate your silhouette by in essence making your feet "disappear" into infinity & beyond ⬇️below your hem. This trick is a lifesaver when you don't wear tights of any sort & favor flats😊. 🔎Always on the lookout for more contemporary shoes & sandals in nude to expand my wardrobe options. Otherwise, I will 📘bookend 📘 color. Pair a contrasting top color👚 w/a matching 🧥topper & bottom👖. Or, match 👕top & bottom👖 in color, but add a 🥼topper in another color, pattern, or interesting texture. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I have used most of these guides, but I struggle with pairing shoes other than sneakers with track pants. I know you suggested kitten heels, but it still looks too incongruous to my eye. Maybe i haven't seen examples of this working to train my eye. I'd love to see some try ons in this vein.

I need this. I just had my 4th baby 6 months ago and had 2 briefcases of pre pregnancy clothes that I will not be able to fit anymore 😫. Yesterday I passed most down to my 15yo so now I am starting from square 1. Thank goodness my shoes still fit. Anyway now I’m off to thrift some pieces and this video is helpful.

Such a great topic Leonie! I’m a bit of a new student to these concepts but they’re brilliant for those of us who want to look modern and not stuck in a previous era. I’ve been playing with the three color rule with great success, it is almost magical and had never occurred to me before. Much younger women have been giving me compliments and I LOVE it😁. I don’t want to become irrelevant or invisible. I’m hoping to create an eye so that these rules become second nature to me when I’m getting ready, you’re certainly an inspiration ❤

Love love love this video!!! I totally agree to your every point, especially the changing go-to pieces. I definitely had to redefine my go-to after I retired. My go-to now include wide leg jeans, cropped cotton tee, flannel shirts, more polished sweatshirts or on trend casual tops/knits. They are definitely not what I used to wear during the day. As casual as they are, I don’t mix these pieces with tees and sweats I wear to bed.

Good Morning Leone, There are few additional rules that I like to follow. The first was introduced to me by MM Styling, which is a color guide for creating a balanced outfit. And that is that "every color needs a friend." I do like a cohesive outfit, so having two pieces in the same color family does that for me. Nothing I'm wearing looks estranged when I follow this guideline. The next rule that works for me, is which item is going to be my hero piece for the day? I want to make a statement with my wardrobe and being very selective about which piece I really want to steal the style show is always my outfit starting point. For my style uniform, I can never go wrong with sandwich dressing. It's a formula that I never have to think about and serves me well. Thanks for all you do to keep us looking stylish! I really lik your blue sweat pants, but do you also wear them outside the house? For me they are more a home wear pice or for going to the sports. I never woul d have thought that they could be worn as "normal" pants, interessting!

I think these tips are very helpful, especially for people in a style rut, or don’t have the time to think about their outfits. I’ve used similar approaches for women transitioning out of the military. They’re so used to wearing a uniform, and then super casual clothes on the weekends. Maybe, you could do a video on that subject sometime? For people who wore uniforms (even school uniforms) find their own style?

My outfits are determined by what foorwear I can manage that day. If I can't bear heels, I need to wear flats and a more cadual outfit.

I am becoming disillusioned about youtubers seeling/preaching the same thing about fashion, personal style. All the trends make us all look like copies of each other, no individuality. We dont need to follow this. Just wear anyhring & everyhting that brings tou happiness
