Free audio tape attached to the April 1989 issue of UK high-performance motoring magazine Fast Lane (published 1984-1994). Pictures are from the 24-page supplement accompanying the tape. The cars featured are track-tested at Donington Park circuit by Mark Hales with Beki Adam as passenger (Top Gear presenter 1988-90).
The following cars are featured:
Porsche 911 Club Sport
Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth
Audi Quattro
Ferrari F40
Also tested were the Daihatsu Charade GTti and Ford Escort XR3i but these do not feature on the tape.

This is so awesome! I was only 13 and had posters of the F40 on my wall, but hearing it on cassette tape was amazing! Once the F40 came out and broke 200mph, the whole game changed. The Bugatti EB110 and Jaguar XJ220 tried to challenge it, but I remember seeing so many pics in Motor Trend and Car & Driver showing how body panels out of alignment when those cars went around corners; they were built purely for speed and couldn't turn for crap. It wasn't until the McLaren F1 came out, which could go 240 AND turn, until the F40 posters came down the the F1 posters went up. Thanks for posting this!

Arrived a little late to this particular party, have no words for what was an amazing analogue bygone era! Stereoscopic visualisation via binaural auditory perception. Sensorium overdose this, love it!

Ha I remember this well! The magazine came with a little white cassette box and inside was the audio that you are now listening too! What a blast from the past, i thought it was from the fast lane 1988 mag but my memory is not reliable! I remember Mark Hales critizing the dash board covering of the Ferrari, telling listeners it was like a pair of Postman's trousers!

Fortunately nowadays we have RU-vid videos to accompany magazines -- or even replace magazines entirely. Though, there is something special about only hearing the sounds and being "forced" to use your imagination.

Everyone says their favorite car was the last of the really great cars. I prefer the F50 vs. the F40, but I've always been more about handling and precision than raw horsepower.

I like your comment. Not that I'll ever get to drive or own any of them but at 44 years old I think the F12TDF is the most beautiful car ever, and the LaFerrari is also spectacular.

Call me crazy, but I like the whirring sounds generated by high-wattage electric cars too. I like the sound of any precision machine working at its limit, really.

I will never understand why some men feel compelled to push women away from things men enjoy. I've always preferred women who like the same things I like, and they are far too rare. Am I that strange? Isn't it _every_ man's dream to drive a fast car with a pretty woman who also likes fast cars? Isn't that, in fact, _the exact reason_ why Becky Adam was riding shotgun in the F40 during this recording?
