Interesting, they drop the resolution to maintain framerate performance rather than dropping the framerate to maintain resolution like most games do. This should become a new standard.
It's more difficult than it seems! When you run out of time when rendering a full resolution frame, you just advance the simulation engine by another frame without rendering it, so framerate drop is nearly automatic. But when you want to drop resolution, you either are introducing extra full image buffering latency, or you need to drop it predictively. Plus on some hardware, resolution switching itself takes a significant time, or you introduce an extra scaling operation which can take up time of its own. Plus it depends on where the source of slowdown is. If it's in the rendering, you can do that. If it's in CPU tasks like creation of object buffers, the only way to avoid the frame drop is to stop generating the data, which will lead to visual inconsistencies.
I remember what he was discussing as to why the game was so small on the Wii U, and it's basically the same reason as why the Switch version is so small. Basically, most assets like textures are made through algorithms and help keep file size down greatly.

This is how a Switch game is done. It makes use of ALL of the Switch's mechanics while keeping a steady 1080p/60fps AND it's a very small sized game. Developers pay attention.
To my knowledge, the company is not for sale because it works part-time, the people have day jobs besides developing games, that they don't want to abandon because job security in game development isn't all that hot, not even when owned by someone like Nintendo. And it's just a handful of people who have been friends for 25 years now, so it's not like they could just restructure. But throwing some perks their way wouldn't go amiss - they must be recognized as one of Nintendo's strongest third parties and great contributors to success of their newer systems.
*Siana Gearz* The don't have to be bought by Nintendo to make a 1st party game. The could easily be bumped up to 2nd party status and work on an F-Zero game while still remaining independent and flexible.
You know what, I doubt new F-Zero should be made at all. Every time there is a partnership between Nintendo and a third party to produce a main franchise entry, communication friction occurs and the result is horrible. Examples: Metroid Other M by Ninja-Tecmo and Star Fox by Platinum. Both studios which are well renowned for polished and very playable titles in their own right. But Nintendo demands something and then it gets done that way whether it makes sense or doesn't and the result is broken controls for example.
Siana Gearz That was also the case with Sonic Boom rise of lyric. Now please here me out its because of Sega and Nintendo the game turned out the way it did. There wouldnt have been glitches, more content, better story etc. Dont believe me look at the first trailers then compare them to the game. The wii U engine couldn't handle sonic boom rise of lyric causing a lot of content to be cut out. Big red button didnt want to release it but was on a contract abd thus rise of lyric was born the way it is now.
Or they could, now eight months later, use their (failed) PS Vita and remote play to get their GT Sport on. (don't hate Sony fans, I have a PS4 and a Vita and I love them both).
This game was, and still IS, solid gold proof that the Switch is a lot more powerful than people are willing to admit. And THIS was a LAUNCH TITLE from a small indie team in Germany! If Shin'en could push the Switch's hardware this far in 2017, then why do other developers and publishers with presumably bigger budgets half-ass their ports so much? Five years later, and this game still holds up really damn well! I hope we get a sequel on Nintendo's next console that shows off the full power for that respective hardware, just like Fast RMX did for the Switch!
Mainly because many of those games were made for those other hardware/consoles in mind, to the transition isn't that simple. It's why the draw distance and framerate for LA Noire is worse on Switch than PS3, since it was originally programmed and designed with consoles like that in mind. Whereas Fast Racing has been Nintendo dedicated for generations.
Isaax well they kept the graphics on that the same because they dont want Wii U owners to feel cheated, its not close to even using the Switch to its full potential

Mario1080p The original game was an impressive technical feat when it released. Mainly from what they were able to cram into Wiiware's meager 40mb limit. It looked and performed better than alot of physical games on disc 🤓
Between this and the early reports on MK8 Deluxe, I think we can safely say that Breath of the Wild, great game though it is, was kind of a half-assed port, and that the Switch's full potential has yet to be revealed.

Shinen are the only ones (besides Nintendo development groups) that are able to deliver a heavy game on a Nintendo hardware, others are just lazy to optimize software. Shinen is the real deal I guess.

The comments about the PS3 and Xbox 360 running these games are fucking hilarious. Less than 1GB of ram and graphics over twice as weak as the Wii U and people seriously think these games can run on those systems. The fanboy runs deep in those veins.

A game like this does not require much vram or horsepower, which is why Wipeout HD ran at 1080p 60 fps close after ps3 launch, even though it did not even utilize cell chipset properly. And that game looks just as impressive as this one if not more so when it came to the visuals.
+Alexander Chilton It is not sold as a portable. It is sold mainly as a home console replacement with portbale coming second and that is straight fromt he mouth of Nintendo. And too bad most people do not care anyways.. If they wanted a handheld they would just buy one instead of one that leads to sacrifices in both areas. Nintendo could have just released a more powerful sequel to the 3ds that could do just that and maybe it would even be portable enough to fit in a pocket, like a real handheld gaming system.
+Good Night Moon Take a look at WipeoutHD/Fury on the ps3 running at 1080p 60fps.. These kinds of games generally is not very taxing on the hardware. On top of that when Wipeout HD came out, they had not even figured out to how to properly utilize the cell chipset yet.
People, people, people... Why so much hate on weather Nintendo or Sony PS or Microsoxt Xboxes are better or worse. Honesty, graphics isn't all in a game. I mean... yeah! It adds up to the gaming experience. But honestly... where ist your real ability as a player, wanting ot experience different games weather the graphics are great or not. Just try and find out. Graphics isn't all. This game looks fantastic though I prefer Wipeout for now. But I would love to try out that game.
But Nintendo doesn't really have an excuse though releasing a system with only 4gb ram memory! Ps4 and Xbox one when they were released they had 8gb ram memory. You get also 500gb or 1TB HDD along with it.. Nintendo gives only 32GB... You don't get much value for a system like this. This Switch shouldn't be even around 400 euro but 300 euro at launch. It's a turn off with weaker system than the previous consoles.. Nintendo is entering with their new system and should be a tad stronger than the PS4. That's what I dislike about the Switch. It's overpriced for the system you get
I can't argue the ram but honestly the drive space is fine. Games are never install on the hard drive and SD cards are really cheap. Load times are also extremely short, something that ps4 and xbone cannot achieve. Seems worth the price if more games come out.
I don't understand how this game isn't getting the credit it deserves. i've been eyeballing it since it was announced, and it seems to be the most visually impressive game on the switch
oh I was waiting for your analysis on this one! The Wii U version was quite interesting because of all the tricks they had to used to get it running on Wii U and still look as good as it did. The developers have stated that they didn't need all those tricks on Switch so it should look much better all around!
This game looks so incredible, I really really hope this gets a PC port but that gets less and less likely as time goes on. I don’t really have a proper set up with a modern TV, my gaming set up is mostly for retro stuff, so I haven’t brought a switch yet, but this is definitely one of the games that makes me want one really bad.
1080p, beautifull graphics and 60fps, this game proves that Dragon Quest Heroes 2 on the Switch is a lazy Square Enix port and it also proves Nintendo screwed the Breath of the Wild Wii U to Switch port. This game does remind me a little about Wipeout 2048 on PS Vita, that one has also great performance and grapics for it's time (but I would prefer 60fps with worse grapics, but the 30fps does feel faster than it should). Also it used dynamic resolution and it was a launch title too. Thx for the video.
Mizgala28 Not sure it's rendering at 1080p in portable mode and if it is it's impressive but AA is lacking and 720p is the output resolution. My phone can't touch the performance metrics of this title but a few games can output at 1080p and I do know of a Mobile game that does 1080p and 4 player split screen it's called _Riptide Renegade._ Sony is releasing a new phone that may supercede the Switch in this department if games like CSR 2 outputs in 1080p 60FPS or if Riptide Renegade - a $3 game without microtransactions or DLC at all - start becoming more common place Sony's new portable could be a phone that plays nice with a console controller. As is Riptide Renegade plays very well with my DS4 controller. Back in 2012 with Vita a game like Fast RMX would have been much more impressive to me, but in 2017 with portable PCs with dual integrated GTX 1080s and other powerful handhelds smaller than Switch playing The PC version of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot... It's not as easy to impress. This game is running at a high clip in 1080p on a inexpensive mass production mobile console and that is rightfully being commended. So don't take my own opinions too personally.

I don't understand why not all games use a dynamic resolution at this point. Especially in an era of PS4 and PS4 Pro, Switch docked and undocked, and soon X1 and Scorpio. Would just makes it easier for devs to adapt their games to different power levels. I would love to see the feature implemented in more PC games too.

it is possible , but with an enormous prize tag, but yeah people should stop looking at switch as a homeconsole , but they should look at it as a handheld/hybrid, the guts are behind the screen nonetheless and no other homeconsole has that.
The Xbox 360 has 48 pixel shaders non unified (DX9), 32bit tri core CPU and 512mb of ram . The Switch if it utilizes X1 has 256 unified cuda cores (dx12) 4 x 2 64bit CPU cores and 4gb or ram. The Switch is more like 4 times more powerful then the Xbox 360, don't under sell it.
Rabbidscool - Gaming Experience That's why I can't wait till emulation software drops. Right now I'm using a GPD XD for my portable emulation, which is pretty damn powerful (runs DC, n64 and PSX at full speed w/ over lock).
Been playing this, I was surprised at how much fun it is, and it does look good and run flawlessly. Interesting to hear about the firmware issue though. Never played it on Wii U, it's great that they decided to release an improved Switch version.
If this is a shitty kids game, then, please give me more of these kinds of games. It's phenomenal. As a day 1 PS Vita owner I can say that Wipeout2048 performance issues never got better and in terms of polish has nothing on Fast rmx. Wipeout has weapons, that's the only significant difference. The actual racing is better with Frmx. As for docked Zelda, the fps drops is being made out to be more than it actually is. It actually looks great and runs well most of the time.

Swtich is the best handheld ever made. I couldn't believe how much better Breath of the Wild looks and runs in handheld mode over docked. And just in general, it's insane the level of graphics for a portable device. I think Nintendo made a huge mistake, marketing this as a home console, that can also be portable. It should have been a portable first, that can also dock and be played on your TV with better resolution and clock speeds. That sounds much more appealing. Then they should have released a stronger a home console version that isn't portable, but that also has all the same games on Switch (so they unify their dev studios,and only makes games for a single platform). Then that would appease all the people complaining about the home console not matching PS4 Pro etc. Also the battery life is actually impressive. Even playing a graphically intensive game like BOTW, it lasts 3 hours. That's better then the Vita, which ran much smaller scale (and less demanding) games. It even beats out iPad tablets for gaming. While I know the size might be too big for some people, it's smaller then the iPad Mini by a fair amount. It's lighter then any other portable. Also being able to snap off the JoyCons, makes the screen fit in a pocket, and easily fit into bags. Battery life still is an issue. But it's an issue in general. We really need to have batteries evolve, because they are horrible for phones and tablets as well. But the fact that Switch is better then most portable devices, and is pushing the kind of graphics that it does? Insane. And all the "handheld" smaller scale games that will be on Switch (so all the 3DS devs that will then make portable games for Switch), easily push 5-6 hours of battery. So only the home console/major AAA titles, are 3-4 hours. It's so impressive.
What's really interesting to me is that the Switch in portable mode is essentially rendering twice the pixels and more effects when compared to the WIi U despite the fact that, according to the leaked specs, the Switch in handheld mode should have roughly equal Gflops to the Wii U, but pushing twice the pixels usually requires around twice the power, just seems like there's a lot we still don't know about the Switch specs.
When a Development team actually knows what they're doing, you get Gems like this. Seriously, all of this visual tech, 60fps, 1080p w/4p split and all in under a 1gb footprint?! I only want people who work as hard as this team to develop games for the Switch they can keep those lame half assed ports away.
Well, Wii U was 352 Gigaflops, Switch is 1 Teraflop, close to Xbox One with 1.35 Teraflops. I'm not surprised if the Switch can run next gen games withs minimum settings and a few tweaks. Now it's up for third party devs to make games or not. After all, Nintendo finally has acceptably decent hardware
TheChazzyC only the Xbox one launched several years ago. The switch, while an interesting machine, lags 1 to 2 generations behind. Hence I doubt the third party support is going to be what everyone thinks/hopes it is going to be.
I'm old enough to have been through the "BIT" wars (8BIT, 16BIT, etc...). Everybody thought BIT's where everything. More BIT's meant automatically it was better. Thing is though it wasn't. We see the same thing with TFLOPS now. Everybody is talking about it, hardly anybody knows what it means exactly. Sure, it's an indication of some sorts, but it works in conjunction with numerous other parameters to determine whether the system will be able to handle such and such resolution or such and such framerate. Hence I'd urge everybody to drop the focus on FLOPS and just wait and see.
This is the only game at the moment I'd like to go and buy the Switch for but I'll wait for Mario Odyssey and maybe improved hardware to come out, and of course GTX 1080 Ti is a priority at the moment. Until then this game is a blast even on the Wii U! Highly recommended.

Awesome video. Just a question: Did I hear correctly that there is gonna be a firmware update to increase the Switch GPU performace? Did Shin'en or Nintendo tell you this?
To be honest, even if the Switch had the hardware of the PS4's capability, unless the games were probably optimised for the system it self, we'd still get a lot of games that dip under 30fps like what appears on the PS4 anyway. *better buy that PS4.5 if you want the stable frame rates* But even if it did have that hardware specs. Would that really change peoples minds? I mean most people who buy Nintendo consoles are buying them for the 1st party Nintendo games like Mario and Zelda and such, games the system will be primarily known for. If you're not interested in them to begin with, would improved hardware make that much of a difference? It would improve chances of 3rd party as well admittedly, but you're better off buying 3rd party multi plat games for a system that has 1st party titles you actually want too. I guess my point is, if you're only buying a system for it's specs and not the games it'll offer, then what's the point? At that point why not just go all in and go PC if specs are the end all be all for you? You'd get a better experience overall if that's what you're after. It's fine if you don't like Nintendo or the Switch. But I find some of these console war arguments to just be rather stupid when comparing to each other. Should be more focused on the companies making games for these systems and sacrificing frame rate that's consistent for pretty visuals. It'd be ideal to have both but if you're not tailoring it to the console you are making it for, then why are you making it on that console to begin with?

I brought my switch with me to my community college and I actually played this with a few class mates with the joy cons during class break. That fun experience alone was worth the $20.
Amazing game. And after getting curious about the developer, I just found Shin'en also made my favorite space shooter for my favorite portable console- Gameboy Advance called "Iridion II". Everyone should check out the soundtrack for that title. It's euphoric. As for this game, I like just about everything about it, apart from the progression. You can pretty much unlock all the vehicles in the first hour of playing. Had they been a little more spread out, It'd feel more satisfying to unlock a new ride. That said, What an amazing title to play and show off to your friends.
Honestly, a Shin'en X Nintendo project akin to what Nintendo did with Retro Studios sounds very appealing. I'm not sure they really want to do that, but with guidance from Nintendo, I'm positive that Shin'en could make a legitimately amazing F-Zero game that stands next to the best in the series.
I see tons of comments saying the switch is overpriced. Let me drop some facts, every console is overpriced. Both Xbox One and PS4/Pro isn't even capable of 1080p 60fps the majority of the time. Not that i'm in favor of the switch, but those who are comparing a fully fledged console to a handheld are pretty fucking stupid. To conclude, every console is overpriced garbage. Yes! Fucking Pro came out at $400 and yet the sony dickriders would buy it in a second. The Scorpio is also going to be expensive. Funny thing is these are considered new which the Switch is; NEW. So new things always come out at a high price but then drops like basic PS4. Which btw PS4 is purposely doing price drops with bundles as a marketing technique now that the Switch launch. They would do the same when Scorpio comes out. So that people would choose their system over the others.
