Right now I'm doing all editing in post. Nothing is live switched at the moment; I don't have a 4K switcher for the basement yet. I may use vMix with a DeckLink 8K Pro card here before long as a temporary solution until I do get a 4K switcher, but I'm waiting until I have the final spit-and-polish and cleaning done on the YT studio before I setup a real computer in there, even temporarily. I've got an ATEM Mini Extreme setup for right now to switch live streams, but since I produce most of my videos in 4K, that switcher isn't useful for that.

You could move them out of your sync folder. Or create a sync folder for just those files and delete the sync relationship with that folder after they're synchronized.

5GB won't get very far with video. Most of my projects are at least a few hundred gigabytes.

That's going to be true of all of the various ways of sharing files. You have to have local copies of the files to open them.

A lot of factors go into what kind of performance you'll get. But that doesn't matter so much, as I'll get to in a moment. While a portion of the demo I did was over the LAN, going over the Internet doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be that much slower. I've had quite a few times where files will sync over the public Internet at the full 110+ MB/sec available with my Internet connection. It, of course, depends on the available bandwidth between endpoints with every solution out there. Resilio will establish a direct connection whenever it possibly can (basically assuming the ISP and router will permit it), and when it is able, it will go at full wire speed -- literally as fast as is possible. Both solutions are efficient at identifying changed portions of files and only synchronizing what is different. There isn't really a huge advantage of one over the other there. The biggest difference between them is the complexity at setting them up and getting them going. It's hard to justify asking someone who isn't technology-focused to setup something like Tailscale and rsync or FreeFileSync. But asking someone to install and get Resilio Sync up and going isn't really much of a challenge, as it is just a single application and you can literally share just a single URL. They can click the URL you share, and that will install the software and walk them through getting that shared folder up and going. To ask someone who isn't really technology savvy to install a VPN, then install rsync or FreeFileSync is usually asking too much. I would never ask my clients to do something like that, which is the problem that this video is focused on helping my viewers to solve.

Only while files are being synchronized. Once the sync has finished, the source computer can go offline. The same thing is true when it's cloud-based as well. You've got to leave the computer on while the upload finishes, and it usually takes a lot longer.

Synchronized storage should never be considered backup. Modifying or deleting the file in any synchronized location means that all copies are modified/deleted -- kind of defeating the point of a "backup." Encrypting your own files means you have to keep unencrypted and encrypted copies, and take time to go through that step. Very inconvenient and time consuming.

By any chance was the provider who offered huge amounts of storage but appalling upload speeds called iDrive?

Most all of them have terrible upload speeds when they offer large amounts of capacity for cheap

This isn't a cloud service... it's a sync service. Different intent. You do have to leave your computer on while the files are uploading. The same is true of going to a cloud service, though. If you only turn on your computer while you're actively working, this may not be the solution for you. I haven't had any issues with clients figuring out how to install the software, particularly if I send them a link from Resilio. Those links will install the software and setup the synchronization. But when I only need to send one or two files to a client I'll use OneDrive so they don't have to jump through those hoops. (I already have an Office 365 account so I'm getting that storage for "free" -- this makes the most sense for me, plus Microsoft doesn't count the size of the files I share against the available storage of the people I'm sharing with... that's huge!) This is primarily for when I'm collaborating with people where we're sending files in both directions, back and forth. In my experience, Resilio tends to be faster and more reliable than uploading to any of the cloud services. With a gigabit symmetrical connection, I nearly always have a faster connection than the people I'm sharing with so I'm never the bottleneck. And that is generally the case -- people doing video production usually have a faster connection than the clients they're working with. I've tried all of the big cloud services for collaborating with others, and this, by far, has been the best solution I've tried. The others have pretty much all been a nightmare to work with, and cost a LOT more to boot. I've never seen Resilio get stuck where it just stops syncing, which I have seen with *all* of the could storage services, and it always takes forever to get it fixed and going again.

Other services don't charge both people for that shared storage. If I share 500 GB of files with a friend on OneDrive, for example, that 500 GB doesn't count against their storage. Their amount of available free space doesn't change by accepting an invitation from me, even if they're only on the free account. Only the person initiating the sharing has that data count toward their quota. Dropbox, on the other hand, when a friend shares a file with me, I have to not just have space in my own allocation, but now I can't use that space for something else. And that's despite the fact that DropBox is only storing a single copy of those files. When you work in video, and work with a lot of clients, this becomes an enormous problem.

Some people like to have a company behind a product so they know it is supported. Open source solutions often don't provide that.
