Wow, this just solved my problem! I thought I had to go to bed and wait until the morning for the cycles to finish rendering the volumetric. Thank you so much!
WOW... I've always wondered if this was possible [eevee + cycles]... never thought I'd finally find my answer on a video that doesn't mention this gem of a technique in the title. I would have never found this
I've been waiting for this exact workflow since Eevee became a reality, many thanks!!!, Also your environment course is excellent. When the conference finally comes back I owe you a pint. 👍
such a great tutorial!! I love seeing how Cycles and Eevee can be utilized together to get incredible results. Appreciate the knowledge and wisdom and love the Heroes of Bronze project!
I’ve noticed the eevee motion blur and cycles motion blur don’t match up perfectly for scenes like this… what do you do to account for that? I’m thinking about trying to use the vector blur for my scene
The issue now is that you lose out on volumetric shadows if you try to do something more complex than just some dust. A way to solve this would be to have a duplicate of your scene for Eevee with a pure black shadeless material on top of everything, as well as a pure white background, and then blend your volumetrics on top of your Cycles render using Overlay, this way volume scattering darkens the scene, and your volumetrics brighten it. This still doesn't really compare to Cycles volumetrics though, and requires lighting tweaks for certain effects. For instance spotlights angles need to be raised and the blending increased otherwise it looks really ugly since Eevee can't actually scatter light.
love the tutorial! Quick question: how do you do so the alpha channel of your 2D soldier sprites is carried over the Holdout? For me Blender ignores the alpha channel and uses the mesh contour to create the holdout.
Sir I have a problem When I Make a new scene then It means that I can render only it at a time then when we use EVEE for volume I have to render it separately in another EXR sequence. Means I can not get the whole render (one layer of cycles render and another of EVEE volume data ) in one EXR file. even If i get two layers in One EXR file then both will be of Evee (due to two render layers ). So is it the point of video that first render cycle scene in one file sequence and then render The Evee scene in other sequence ?? If not then please tell me how can I get one EXR pass as the Cycles render and the other pass as EEVEE render. I fillowed each step carefully but later realised that both rendered passes of the exr file was Of evee How to get one exr pass as cycles and other pass as evee volume (if I delete the main shot from render layer of EVEE scene then I only get the volume pass and when render cycles scene then only get scene but no volume)
Hi, an interesting question, but I raréy ever use EXR so I cant really answer 😶 I suggest going to Stack Exchange, Reddit or Blender forums and ask it there, somebody might be able to help 🙂
I dont know if you already answered this but, how much did it cost CC3 with all the plugins and export options and stuff to make a good FBX character? amazing work btw
Hey Martin, when I hold out 'alpha videos' in Eevee (like your 2D soldiers), the whole plane gets held out and not just the alpha. I tried all the settings and combinations in the blending mode and shadow mode. What do I do?
I really need to do this for a 250 frame animation. I am curious though my compositing is different on each scene. Also how do you do this technique for an animation? I mean render them all out?
Hi there, thank you for the great tip I’ve used it and it works really well and much faster…I just have one issue which is that I get an Asxtra image also rendered…I’m using your method but instead of alpha over I’m using file output node for cycles and Eevie separately to composite in after effects after…but I’m getting one cycles ong one eevie png and and extra cycles png ? Any idea why ?
Awesome tutorial and the final scene looks great! Is there a place where you post the hardware you use, please? In the process of building a new PC to rekindle my love for 2D/3D art.
Using this technique with tree models that use image textures and alphas for the foliage produces a hard edge around the trees with holdout. Anyone found a work around?
Is there no lighting quality loss from not using volumetrics in Cycles? Not sure if this thought of mine is correct even, does Cycles volumetrics add any bounce lighting or shadows or something that Eevee doesn't?
Light scattering through the volumes in Cycles is better looking than in Eevee imho, but I find that with good lighting using spot lights, Eevee can produce very nice effects too
@@MartinKlekner Sure, but I meant does Volumetrics have any effect on the world? other than shadows. Like, its not adding more light via bouncing or something? Not sure if I'm worrying for no reason lol
This short animation already ever ancient Greece movie or game to shame. i have never seen any body depict a huge number of soldiers marching that well and detailed.
i love blender for the add ons but any small thing like adding fog or clouds is so damn slow. i have to wait so long to see any small change i make in viewport. unreal engine 5 is much better at setting up scenes and environments fast. Much faster renders too
