Something about hypervelocity 22 is fascinating

I love seeing both videos and hearing from people who've had great success with the Hyper-Velocity 22 ammo. I hunted in Zimbabwe, Africa in 1989 and brought a brick of Remington Yellow-Jacket ammo at the request of the outfitter/booking agent. I only had one opportunity to fire this ammo and it was one evening when we came upon a small group of impala and the camp needed meat and my Professional Hunter gave me his rifle and asked that I take an animal. One shot, 15 -20 yards away and the animal was dropped immediately. Food for both us as clients and for the camp staff as well. The Yellow-Jacket worked extremely well.

Great video so many rimfire options out there. I personally don't mind the shots in the background. They don't distract from anything. I understand someone may have complained, but I believe the majority of viewers who have ever been to a range are used to it.

I have about 1000rds of the aguila supermax but of the flat nose variety. They typically chrono at 1600fpe from a 16" .22LR semi auto rifle, which is about the same velocity you'll get with hot .22 magnum rounds from a Kel Tec PMR30. So if you have a high capacity .22 rifle and load with those aguila supermax rounds, you basically have the equivalent firepower to a Kel Tec PMR30 loaded with top tier .22 mag ammo. That is for me where you can start calling something a legitimate home defense type setup.

I would really like to see a triple punch, ecospeed, cci copper gel test to see about consistency and tumbling out of a rifle. I would test weight retention as well. Punch isn't a lead free round, but if it retains all its weight because it doesn't deform, then it provides the same benefit for people who don't want any lead in their meat. Great work on these btw.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics Год назад
You could always watch the other videos in the .22/rimfire playlist where I tested the ecospeed and punch seperately and against others to calculate how often they tend to tumble. Of course that doesn't give you the weight retention data however, and the copper I never previously gel tested. I'll see if I can throw something of the sorts together the next time I have the blocks made up.

Enjoyed the Paul Hartle cameo appearance. I watch all his videos too. IMO the additional changes are OK for this video as this video is prefaced with the knowledge that it contained lots of issues. Is this a "Comedy video channel"? No but once in awhile Sh!t happens and making light of it (to me) is just fine. I love 22 rimfire videos as I shoot a huge amount of rimfire. Most of us can afford to shoot it and few of us test it so its fun to see how it performs. I especially like that you use REAL GEL and not the "clear gel" as the 'clear gel" is NOT the gel used by law enforcement as it do NOT compare as favorably to flesh as knox gel.

Good video , however it would make it extremely helpful if you can a chart with all the results. A chart with the bullets , grain,fps,and penetration measurements. I think if you just put it in the end of the video . That’s what your missing in your videos
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics Год назад
I won't do that because then 90% of people will just skip to the end if I start doing it. That is detrimental to the success of the video, because viewer engaugement is the #1 deciding factor for youtube spreading the video around and helping it get more views...
@sh1529
@sh1529 Год назад
@@BuckeyeBallistics If you did that don't you think you would get more subscribers?
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics Год назад
@sh15289 - Subscribers is mostly just a hollow number- I have over 40k subs right now and when I post a new video, only about 3% of them actually watch the new video. As I said, the single most deciding factor of my success is viewer retention, not the number of subs I have. Retention is how I get more views because overall retention makes the algorithm more likely to send you the video in your feed. Even more so, aside from the extra views, the longer retention makes me more money per view. In the end, it might make a few more impatient people happy that they can just skip to the end of my video after all my hard work to just get the numbers, but allowing such is detrimental to my success in every way because retention is #1, not subscriber count. More subs is great and of course it works in conjunction with success just like likes and comments do, but I don't get payed for likes, comments, and subs- I get payed for views and viewer retention.
@sh1529
@sh1529 Год назад
@@BuckeyeBallisticsI understand better now. I guess it is just a question as to whether or not there are alot of impatient people who could help you earn more money and also that many youtubers have alot of subscribers but may earn money in related businesses and their youtube channel brings them repeat customers in that business.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics Год назад
@sh1529 - I'm an amazon associate and post affiliate links in all my videos to the products I use and mention such in the videos, but that pays me peanuts compared to what I get from the ad revenue on my videos which is how youtubers make 90% or more of their income. The higher the watch time (retention), the more ads are shown/the more money you make, not to mention how the algorithm favors this and results in more views. Enableling people to skip to the end of the video to get the data is literally burning money. The ads are annoying, but that's how we get payed and are able to continue doing what we do...

Nice job Bro. Being that you’re the one experiencing all these rounds, do you have an opinion on the top 3 recommended for defensive use out of a rifle? Would they change for a pistol? Most accurate for hunting? Include all the types not just in this video.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 13 дней назад
Ok so it's gonna take me a minute to answer all this- Yes my top 3 .22lr defense loads will change some from a rifle to a pistol due to the change in velocity and the effect it has on the bullet performance in gel. For rifle I will say Aguila Interceptor, CCI Velocitor, and CCI Uppercut- I have tested these and many more in extensive detail on the channel from both pistol and rifle (see the .22/rimfire playlist). The problem with .22 ammo for defensive purposes (besides the low power compared to say a 9mm), is that if the bullet expands (which translates to more stopping power and is what I personally seek), then penetration is shallow. For that reason I recommended the 3 above for rifle, because they penetrate deeper than many others after expansion and don't fragment like others do (a solid hunk of lead is better imo for .22lr incase you need to get through a bone). You may be surprised when you see that I am not going to recommend Federal Punch at all for both R or P (people seem to think it's the greatest .22lr ever), but that's because in my testing I have found others to perform better and more consistantly for the type of performance that * I * am looking for... Now from a pistol it's really going to depend on the barrel length, because some will expand great from a 4" or longer pistol barrel, but they may not expand at all from a 2.5"-3" barrel. So for a 4" or longer pistol barrel I'd go with Aguila Interceptor #1 (because it still expands and penetrates well from my 4" barrel), CCI Velocitor just for penetration because the expansion is not as good (but is still present) from my 4" if I recall correctly, and Aguila Super Maximum (over CCI Stinger) because it has probably the best expansion I have even seen from a 4" barrel while still penetrating well for a .22lr. Now if the barrel length is 5"-6", I'd switch it up a little bit and still recommend the first 2 and the Velocitor would expand a little better making me feel more confident in it, but I'd swap out the Super Maximum for the CCI Uppercut from these barrel lengths because I know they (Uppercut) would then reliably expand (I have seen failures to expand in shorter barrel lengths). Now for shorter than 4" pistols which will result in most .22lr ammo not expanding at all, it changes again because I'm still looking to get some expansion- otherwise you're basically stabbing them with a pencil which isn't very effective. I'd still recommend Aguila Interceptors because you will still get *some* expansion from those down to a certain velocity, though at what barrel length they stop expanding any little bit, that I cannot speak on. For the other two I'd say Super Maximum first for some garunteed expansion, and CCI Stinger last because while these typically get some expansion in 3.5" barrels, at some point they are going to quit expanding in short barrels (I've seen it). If we're worried about the Stinger not expanding, then I guess at that point I might actually recommend the Federal Punch over the Stinger for #3. But the main problem with the Punch is it doesn't always tumble, which is how it does it's "amazing" damage even though it doesn't expand from pistols. In my testing, sometimes they don't tumble and then you just get a pencil thin wound cavity... Now if they barrel get's really short if we're talking something like a mini NAA micro revolver with 1-1/2" to 2" barrels, then you're basically just going to want to go for penetration at that point because the velocities will be too low for anything to expand. Also at those super low velocities, lighter bullets like the Punch and even 33-36gr hollow points may have pretty shallow penetration even with zero expansion due to going so slow- they might even stop in or just behind a rib at this point if they strike one. So with those I'd go with high velocity 40gr or heavier, preferably with a blunt or flat nose like the Aguila Interceptor non hollow point has for a little extra damage over a round nose bullet. Overall though, the type of performance you prefer may differ from what I prefer, so I highly suggest checking out all those videos in the .22/Rimfire playlist on the channel and choose for yourself. Also, evey gun is different- one 3" barrel .22 pistol may get 930fps velocity with a particular load, whereas another may get 1030fps from the same length of barrel. There are just too many variables that affect velocity from one gun to the next, so to really know if the ammo is going to perform as you expect, ideally you would perform your own ballistc gel test with the exact firearm you plan to use to see how it goes- or at least chrono it to check the velocity you are getting and compare it to gel tests with chrono results to see if yours is sending them out fast enough. As for your last question about accuracy of hunting loads, it's going to be the same response- every gun is different. My gun may shoot 1" groups with a particular load, but yours may hate it and shoot 3" groups. So again, to really be sure, you'd need to conduct your own tests. That being said though, I used to use Mini-Mag hollow points all the time for hunting small animals at range. Some good runner ups (and more affordable) would be Remington Golden Bullet hollow points, and Aguila Super Extra hollow points. For the absolute best in accuracy, probably Eley hollow points.

Actually when the other shooters are too close, the gunshot tends to mute out my voice on the mic for a second or two and you literally can't hear me. If they are 50ft or more away, it's usually not an issue. But if they are only 2-3 bays down from me, it happens. Many of my earlier videos were ruined this way because you literally couldn't hear me until I learned this and employed evasive manuevers (recording during their reloads which sucks).
