My Ottocast has still a green UI - even after the update to the current firmware. Do I have a wrong (old) version? The adapter itself looks pretty same as yours.
That’s fine. They changed it from red to green on the units selling on Amazon. The layout of the display should look the same, just swap red for a bright green colour. The older version software has a different interface layout.
A quick & hopefully final comment. ! Having looked on Ford & Apple forums it seems to be known that the iPhone 12 pro max & possibly iPhone 12 pro will not charge on the Ford charging pad.The iPhone pro max is a tight fit & it seems Apple have moved the qi coil inside of the phone. This means that the phone will not align the the charging coil on the pad. Hope this may be of help to owners of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and some of the smaller Ford cars. Apple knows of this problem, so MAYBE it will be fixed with the iPhone 13 pro max. In the meantime back to the wires. !!

I have 32sec from cold boot on a unit that looks like a rebranded Carlinkit 2.0 from a store herre in Denmark - it’s branded “Sinox” and goes for 80 pund (converted form DKK) I’m quite satisfied with the performance also - no dropouts or stutter so far, been using it for around 8-10 hours so far on a few longer journeys. It runs the same “red interface” (do they call that autokit in firmware terms?) Anyway - Great videos - keep ‘em coming :) Jumped into this due to your great reviews ;)

That’s great! Yes the autokit (red UI) dongles have pre-rendered images and this saves the time in processing the images at boot up. Considering how simple the menu is, it is amazing that 10seconds can be saved with this method. I’ve not heard about this brand. I’ll check them out. Thanks again for your input. Yes the charger and phone do get hot. Although when I take the phone out and replace it, starts charging straight away. The iPhone X also gets hot but doesn’t seem to cut out. I’ve tried turning it around & that makes no difference. I’m hoping that IOS 15 update will cure it. Overall I’m happy with the dongle. It always connects in 20-23 seconds maybe it’s fast because I use the car’s USBC socket.
USB C could help but it’s only going as fast as the BT connection and pairing process. So when it’s over the air like that, you’re at the whim of the dongle’s BT and WIFi wireless connections. The charger issue is very odd. It sounds like a faulty coil or it just doesn’t like the position of the max and maybe the alignment o the coil. I really have no idea. If it wasn’t for the X being fine you would have had good reason to take it back to the manufacture to look at it.
Your description says it's a 4G WiFi chip, but the Amazon listing calls it a 5G chip. Which is correct? "U2-NOW built-in 5G chip with faster processing speed and upgrade compatible with 5Ghz WIFI rate, which makes the device respond faster, and can reduce audio and video playback delay to a certain extent. Plug and play, this excellent design eliminates the need to buy expensive decoders or new Car Stereo."
I say WiFi 4 standard. This is different to 5Ghz that you mention from their description.m. WiFi 4 standard can do both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz just not as fast as WiFi 5 and more recent WiFi 6.
This one, CPlay2air v2 or the CarLinkit 3.0 for performance, they all aren't that reliable after 1-2 hours of use, commonly rebooting after that time period.
Right now on amazon US there's a $30 discount coupon available for this item. That lowers the price to just under $100. I'm tempted, with all the positive reviews and all, but these things seem to be very much hit&miss. I did see a review that stated theBT range is very short. Any more on that Anthony?
BT was fine for me at least. That’s with the dongle in the centre console. In a compartment. With the plastic door closed. Worked just fine. I would think the phone would have to be outside the car for it to be that bad. Remember BT is only needed for the initial handshake. After that it’s WiFi range is more the issue. With that said it does have the highest dBm WiFi signal out of all the dongles I tried. In the range of -78 to -82 from 1-2 meters away from it. That might be what you read or what they meant. But this didn’t affect my experience with the dongle. Ideal range is between -55-70 with -100 being poor and -30 excellent.
@@RonnieGreher it’s really quick but I have one issue with it. Twice on my way to work it got disconnected at the same spot I would say around 10-15 mins of driving. Don’t know if it’s a thing but that’s the only issue so far. For me, that’s a bit annoying and if it persists I’ll return it.
Love this dongle, using it in my 2020 Grand Cherokee Limited X. Currently running ios 15.2 in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I have run in to the black screen issue once or twice, what i have done is move it away from any type of heat, i place it in the cup holder. I wish it would of have some type of ventilation to avoid getting over heating. But never the less, this is the fastest dongle no doubt about it, also, i run the media delay in 300 and I have no issues. Also the gps as well.

Hi. Well you can see that I am using this dongle on an aftermarket unit, it looks like stock, but it’s actually an alpine aftermarket receiver. Usually, as long as you have wired CarPlay, it should work. And the fact that you can buy it from Amazon, should it not work, you can return it :-)
@@mattmellor4 I got it and it works great! Every now and again, I have to unplug it and plug it back again after a cold start, but even then it takes less than 25 seconds to be ready to go. MY ONE COMPLAINT: On phone calls, there is a 2 second delay, so I have to switch to speaker or if I have my earbuds in I use those instead.
@@mattmellor4 I think the audio delay in calls will be like that on most wireless dongles because its using WiFi and not BT for the audio relay. Just like the delay in audio playback in music apps being the same 1-3 seconds.

Thanks for watching. You can pair 2 different iPhones to the dongle but if both are in the same car it’s a dice roll which one it connects to. It’s best in the dongle’s settings that you set auto connect to off. That way you get the menu of iPhones paired and then you can select the one you want to use.
So a quick update about this dongle. I ended up returning it to Amazon. Reason is that it has some time when it just keeps disconnecting and reconnecting and it gets hot. I’ve tried different wires as well and it still persists. However, there are times when it’s just flawless and it’s very quick as well. With that been said, I’ll be looking for another one so I’ll keep watching your channel for updates. It just makes the car looks so much cleaner without all those wires haha.
Sorry it didn’t work out for you. CarLinkit has a newer mini dongle out with another on the way apparently. There are a few other Amazon stick like dongles around too that I hope to get hands on soon.

It’s green instead of red (but not the older slower green UI from cplay2air). The one you show in the video looks similar to my carlinkit. Wonder which version mine is..
@@tomtsai yes they changed the colour of the autokit UI from red to green. No idea why but it’s still using autokit (which CarLinkit plus uses) so that’s why the speed is still there.
Thanks for the reply. No the charging pad is factory fitted into the car. Haven’t used it before, but it doesn’t seem perfect. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and it fits the pad snuggly so it should always be centralised on the pad. I’ve tried it with a light weight case on and off and it always stops charging after 10-15 minutes. Update, later in the day. I’ve just been driving with my wife’s iPhone X connected to CarPlay via the dongle. On placing her phone on the built in charging mat it seems to charge constantly. My thoughts are: is the charging pad not powerful enough for the iPhone 12 Pro Max? Or more probably is the fact that I’m running IOS 15 BETA giving me the erratic charging? !!!
It doesn't show up on my 2020 Subaru Crosstrek screen nor does it show up on my phone's Bluetooth. I can connect to it via WiFi and the firmware is up to date
Hi ! Thanks for all these wireless CarPlay dongles reviews. You mentions a 2 sec lag when playing music. Is there any lag when speaking on the phone ? If yes, a conversation may be difficult then ?
It can affect the call when speaking over wireless CarPlay. But the delay can vary per system it’s being used on. Some find it just fine, some notice the lag. Me I haven’t hear such a delay that would make it a difficult conversation. Some day longer calls can suffer. Maybe I’m not in super long calls to notice.

Once you see the wifi profile appear on your iphone wifi settings screen, tap the i icon to the side to view its settings and make sure auto join is set. You could also removing the iphone from the boot menu, also forget BT profile and also the Wifi profile, and start fresh and see if that works. Also restarting your iPhone could help also. You can also play with the delay settings on the IP settings menu once connected to carplay. Some of these might help.
Thanks for the great test ! I can see the full boot-up into carplay takes 21secs, and in your past video the MMB+ take 36secs. Have you tested with their "MMB Wireless CarPlay Adapter Plus", does it also takes around 36 secs to boot-up ? Thanks
I have their Android 9 AI Box, but not their version of the MMB Plus, only the MMB Plus I reviewed already. These dongles handle things differently to the wireless adapters. The speed is the UI mostly, so it’s software rather than hardwire, until the baseline chipset gets improved, and I hear that isn’t happening for a while. I have another video planned that will cover swapping the UI over to see if it improves things. That should be out in a few weeks.
It’s both BT and WIFI. BT is used first to pair the dongle with the iPhone, then a handshake is made between the dongle and your iPhone to pass secure WiFi credentials. Then your iPhone uses WiFi to send videos and audio data to the dongle and your CarPlay system. BT will disconnect unless WiFi is lost from the dongle. Either when it’s crashed or if it looses power. I hope that helps to understand how CarPlay works.
Great review, but I was wondering if you can unlock the phone through this dongle. Meaning, could I walk in to my vehicle and not have to type in the unlock password, but still use thw iPhone. I'm lazy. LOL. Thanks.

Would you believe! The form-factor is exactly the same as the new CarlinKit 2.0 (CPC200-U2W-Plus) and the former one was the same as CarlinKit v1 aka CPlay2Air. How to put a brand sticker and sell the same crap at 2× the price… even the box and the manual are the same! Why don't you open these little boxes to show their motherboard and see if there are any true difference among them?
I still need to use these dongles to compare them with other/newer models. They don’t make them easy to open up without breaking the casing in some way. I’d rather not do that. Newer dongles are starting to show signs of different components inside. Mostly these are WiFi chipsets. You’ll hear about this in my next video on this channel.
@@CarPlayLife I managed to open a couple of cases (U2W-PLUS) without breaking any of the 6 clips inside. My method: insert a cutter blade (the big standard one, trapezoidal shape, not a small scalpel) in the thin line space located between the matte bottom plate and the shiny plastic case. Insert the WHOLE length of the cutting edge of the blade along the line, down to a depth of 1 or 2 mm only. Then pry laterally the upper part (non-cutting edge) of the blade toward the outside of the case: it pops up magically :)
I think this person is referring to the warning on Ottocast’s website indicating it won’t work with iOS 15.1with “Siri Voice Control Function”. I received a notification today that iOS 15.2.1 update available and one of the bugs it is solving is working with 3rd party wireless CarPlay - any intel to know if this solves the problem? Also anything newer out that you would recommend over the U2Now? Love your videos by the way - extremely helpful!!!!
@@michys30 I have only just been able to try this. I inserted the U2-Now dongle that I had, I am running 15.3 iOS and I ran the dongle with also Siri just fine. Maybe it was a recent iOS update that fixed things now. but all seems to be working normal. I also updated the dongle twice successfully, it is now running v2021.12.22.1646. again no issues with iOS 15.3.
Do you think that this will be compatible with newer Fords. I have a 70 plate Ford Puma. It has Ford Sync 3. So I imagine it’s OK. Also could I plug it into the car’s USB C port, instead of the USB A? Thanks.
It will only work with the port that you use to run CarPlay with. If that can be done with either, then that’s handy. As for compatibility, it should work. At least with Amazon you can return it nice and easy. :)
Thanks for your help. The Puma has a USB A Port near the gear stick, but the one in the centre console is USB C. ( USB A on my wife’s Fiesta ). I’m seriously thinking of purchasing, but may wait on your upcoming reviews. Things seem to be improving all the time.
Hey buddy i cant decide which one to get Ottocast, Carlinkit 3.0 n mini. Never tried using wireless carplay before What would you recommend? I am driving a Skoda rs245.
The manufacturer's website has the following information about this model: "‼ Please be aware：⚡IOS 15.2.1 or 15.3 iPhones are not compatible with this product, please kindly know about that, thank you." It's true?
I've not used it recently, but this review was using 15.1 (i think). I still have it, so I'll try it out soon and get back to you when I can about this. I thought compatibility was with Siri, and the dongle should still do everything else.
Updating these are petty much the same as the other update video I’ve done already. You just have to try the right rollback firmware. For this one you need Autokit firmware rollback file.
Has anyone else got the issue that you can only use Apple Maps with the ottocast? When I use Google maps The dongle crashes within seconds. I have tested it with both an iPhone 10 and iPhone 12, and also updated the firmware on the dongle and it still crashes when trying to use Google maps.
I ordered one on IndieGoGo, was wondering if a car doesn't have Android Auto in it, would it essentially take a OEM radio with OEM display and turn it on with Android Auto?

Watched most of your reviews and went for this one, I agree it is very quick to boot and works well playing music but it fails miserably with Sat Nav apps. Music plays as expected, music mutes but no spoken instructions when there should be some then music unmutes and plays as normal. The only way I have found to overcome this is to unplug the unit, plug it back in, let fully reboot then I get music and Sat Nav instructions, not the best while driving. Come to the conclusion that these are just about OK for playing music wirelessly so unless your car comes with wireless Car Play/Android Auto stick with the cable.
Thanks for the insight. Cable is great for longer journeys or when using high intensity apps that will drain your iPhone fast. These are best used for short journeys or if you have a suitable wireless charging solution in the car.

You’ll need a data plan in the phone if you are using CarPlay apps that require mobile data for its content. Such as streaming audio, navigation maps etc.
I had purchased this dongle and everything was working fine for a while until it crashed on me. Now I keep getting the "accessory not supported" error and a black screen on my car's navigation system. I was told that it could be an issue with iOS 15 and to adjust the sync mode and frame rate settings, but I have not been able to resolve the issue yet. It has been a frustrating experience for me.
It does sound something to do with how the dongle works with your system and they adding delay in IP settings menu might improve things. As for most reliable it varys with every car. The one I keep hearing that seems to work when others do no is there Ottocast U2-Now amzn.to/3f3LzZll but they all crash at some point.
Turns out the ones they are shipping with a green UI IS in fact autokit with a colour change from red to green. So in light of this, I would go with Ottocast if you want speed. CarPlay2air if you want stability and better calling performance
@@mrwizzzard1663 in my experience, calling quality can be personal taste. For some the 2second delay with echo feedback in the call might be a problem for some but not for others. It’s a common trait with wireless CarPlay, even factory fitted wireless CarPlay. There is a slight delay. As for quality, it should be much the same as when wired. There is no microphones in these dongles. They will all use what your vehicle uses when using wired CarPlay.

CarPlay launched in 2014 but it only started to wider appear in cars as a standard option around 2017+. You would know if you can plug in an iPhone and see if CarPlay comes up as an option on your car screen. These dongles need wired CarPlay systems to fool the car into thinking an iPhone is connected physically and allow your iPhone to talk to it wirelessly.
Have just purchased this device through your link (Amazon). Upon installing it comes up with the older green interface. It seems to connect and stay connected but the Bluetooth menu on iphone says not connected. Also I have to select connection each time I start the car. Can you comment. ? Thanks.
Hi Steve, that’s very worrying as I have hard a few people say this now. I have reached out them to find an explanation. All I can suggest is maybe when going to Amazon it is being swapped to a different seller on Amazon than Ottocast directly, or they have a line with the green UI that I wasn’t aware of. Until I get their reply I don’t know what’s going on here. As for the connection. BT is only used to start wireless CarPlay. After connection and CarPlay is transmitting wirelessly, BT will disconnect. Whilst WiFi will continue. If you have to select the connection, do you mean the BT connection or the CarPlay icon to launch CarPlay rather than it auto launching.
Hi again. Having spoken with them, they are telling me the dongle is shipping with the green UI. I have no idea why, maybe its wider compatibility over AUTOKIT, who knows. I am now confused and a little disappointed that this dongle isn't shipping with AUTOKIT UI :( It kind of goes against any positives I've given in this review.
Another update. They sent me another one to see this green UI version and all is fine. I expected that the green UI was the old U2 firmware, but but the looks of it, it’s just AUTOKIT with the colour changed to a bright green instead of red in this video. The speed is just the same as what I get in my review. So all is fine 😅

The only way would be to flash it with an older version of Rollback U2-AutoKit. I did a walkthrough here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6y7LzLWRBuM.html - but newer dongles might not be updatable in this way. if it is really not working well and you can't send it back, you have nothing to lose trying.

I’ve had mine Since November. By and large it has been very good. It periodically freezes and requires a reboot but this takes less than 30 seconds. The one issue I have is Waze keeps not updating if I don’t use it for a few journeys, it remains on the last destination. It seems to require rebooting phone and Ottocast. I contacted them and did a manual update. Previously this has gone fine, but this time the unit refuses to power up and CarPlay no longer shows. Can you suggest anything I can do to fix this? This is a good review!
@@CarPlayLife Yes after updating, it said Updated 100%, but now won’t start so seems to be dead. By the way, do you have the issue with Waze getting the location stuck on a previous place? Mine has been like that, on and off, since new
@@RichardDerwentC no I’ve never had that issue with Waze and I use Waze more often than others. I can’t see as it being dongle issue. Because the dongle is just relaying display data from your iPhone. Have you tried uninstalling Waze, restart your iPhone and downloading it again?

So I got my Ottocast today and I had connection issues. when I went to the Ottocast web site the first thing I see is that it isn't compatible with IOS 15, the latest iPhone software so it is useless to anyone who has upgraded their phones.

I got mine today but somehow the bootup speed is the same (sometimes slower) than Carlinkit U2W-Plus. The interface I got is in green while the one in the video is red. My firmware version is 2021.06.21. Maybe it is due to firmware differences?
Can you check the casing and make sure it’s the same as the one in my video. I wonder if you bought or got sent the original dongle and not it’s replacement. The firmware shouldn’t be green at all 😞

@@tomkywang oh ok. Well I can’t vouch for sellers on Shopee. I know the one I link to on Amazon will be the one I reviewed here and it’s directly from Ottocast. There are a lot of imitators out there. People with access to the same case design but old parts inside. Cartizan also uses this case design. Ottocast is also a reseller of CarLinkit so they might be a number of different SKUs with different components and software inside 🤷🏻♂️ it’s a bit of a minefield. It’s best to get direct from the company site or official seller on Amazon. The red autokit UI is where the speed is, it’s very tricky to flash U2W to Autokit. I’ve not been able to with the newer dongles.
So I got one from Amazon to see and they are shipping this with a green coloured version of autokit. The speed is the same for me. I believe the U2W-Plus also uses the same autokit firmware, so there should be very little difference between them both really.
Just got this and I'm running into issues with my iPhone 13 not connecting, it'll just hang on "connecting." My iPhone 8 with iOS 14 worlks fine though, wondering if it's an iOS 15 issue?
There is a recently update in August that was stable. You might have to flash it back to a rollback software and update again and stop before you update to this august firmware.
There is a new one that is a little faster. Review of that on the channel tomorrow. with new ones to try out I don’t get time to stick to one that often. But if I do I go back to the better WiFi ones. Such as this one or CarLinkit 3.0 / Mini.
I need someone that have both. Carlinkit and Ottocast and confirm if this dongle uses a different band than the Carlinkit. Cause I have some traffic cameras that are disconnecing my Carlinkit and I'm looking for another option.
@@CarPlayLife I mean, I'm looking for some dongle that doesn't have any in common (in wifi/bluettoh bands/channels) that CarLinkit and C2PlayAir. Both of them are the same no? Cause both are getting me problems on the same areas in my country. Anny suggeston?
@@randygarcia6824 if you’re getting the ApplePie Mini I wonder if you can tell the hotspot it uses for Speedplay app for CarPlay to use a custom channel. The non android os dongles can’t be changed as fair as I know. They should add it in the browser setup screen.
Has anyone had problems with this dongle with recent iOS upgrades on your phone? I saw on the Ottocast site that this dongle doesn’t support iOS 15.2.1 or 15.3 and later. Also has anyone using this with 2020 GLC had problems with the dongle randomly rebooting or disconnecting?
Not sure if anyone can help. I have an iPhone 12 plus max and and a 2021 Suzuki. Ottocast works great but to get it to work I need to unplug it when I Turn the car on. Any suggestions?
Try delaying the startup time. The new Honda Gold Wings have a similar issue. The U2 needs to be delayed so the bike can connect to other needed devices first.
Thanks for the help. I have now sorted the connection issue, & now understand the BT connection/disconnection issue. I have to say that connection speed is consistently 23 seconds, which seems fairly good to me. The only real drawback I have is that the car’s wireless charging pad is very random. It seems to charge for about 15 minutes then stops charging until I remove and replace the phone. I don’t want to have to plug the phone in to keep it charged, as this negates the reason for using the dongle. !!!
That’s some good speeds. Are you connecting the charging pad to the dongle? These dongles don’t support charging from the USB port that well. If at all. It can overload the dongle and crash it too.
@@CarPlayLife i have c2play on a 2020 range rover and sometimes it sucks, load times are long. and its not a very pleasant device. Is it worth changing it for an ottocast? what you think?
@@andriusk2506 The 3.0 carlinkit or ottocast U2-Now will be slightly different to the CPLAY2Air dongle. So you could try that, get it from Amazon and you have easy returns should it not work as intended.
Hello, I'm looking in vain for a dongle that works with Mitsubishi (2018). tried different but none worked. the connection to the iPhone 12 is established but not to the car. can you recommend something to me Thank you
@@CarPlayLife currently the MMB Adapter. I saw that there is a new update with Mitsubishi compatibility from July, but apparently only for the successor model. I don't get the update, do you think it works with the new model? did you have the opportunity to test the mitsubishi? in the past i was lucky enough to get the adapter working with a trick. I did the first installation on a Nissan, after that it also worked on the Mitsubishi, but only for a few days. i can't do the installation on the nissan every time, over and over again
