If I were starting over and didn't know a word of Chinese, here's exactly what I would do to become fluent. 💬🌟
1️⃣ First, I would accept the fact that I have to learn characters. Ignoring them may create a ceiling to your progress. Embrace the challenge and see characters as the building blocks of the language. ⁣
2️⃣ I would begin with survival Chinese like "hello" and "goodbye," gradually expanding to essential phrases for everyday situations.
3️⃣ My learning approach would be bottom-up, starting from syllables, moving to character components, and then building up to characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs. Understanding the structure of the language will solidify my foundation.
4️⃣ I would deeply understand the "valley of disappointment." Learning a new skill may not progress linearly, but recognizing that growth will be exponential later on can help me stay motivated during challenging periods.
For instance, when learning characters, it might feel like pushing a rock uphill, but once enough characters are learned, recognition of native Chinese content will skyrocket, propelling my progress forward.
Embrace the challenges and triumphs of learning Chinese, knowing that each step you take brings you closer to fluency and a deeper connection with the language and culture. 加油! (Jiā yóu! - Keep going!) 🎉🇨🇳⁣

I took 5 semesters of Chinese in high school and felt like I stop learning around the 4th and gave up. I went to Taiwan over the summer with my class and I have had a burst of motivation to learn now. The linear time concept you mentioned makes so much sense and makes me want to take another Chinese class!

I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! I started learning Chinese Feb of this yr. I stared with basic greetings, numbers, sentences, and then whatever duolingo threw at me. Now I have several books for reference, I watch different kid shows, and I do what I like to call 'Rapid Vocab Learning' by watching shorts like yours. I used to get so frustrated because learning Chinese isn't like learning Spanish or French... the letter vs. character barrier can be challenging. There are so many people with their own learning philosophy; don't learn Characters to Yes, absolutely learn Characters. BUT, I must say that learning has become easier. However, as much as self teaching has worked for learning other languages, I am realizing that I need something more structured in order to learn Chinese because as you pointed out in other videos, there are nuances and intricate details that we 留学生 must take into consideration; like homophones. Thank You so much for all you and your team are doing. I am saving up for your course. I can't wait !!!!! 😊

@@MandarinBlueprint Free is great, but it's not structured to master the language. I need a course that's going to aid in learning and that will make me more accountable. I will check them out though as it will get me familiar with how your program works so when I am able to start the real program, it too won't be foreign 🤣😂😆😄🤣

I don’t agree with bottom-up. Language is context-specific. A sentence is a minimal context. Learning a word without a sentence is a sure way to kill your feel for the language

Learning Chinese is like a 5 year lesson in patience. At the end of 5 years you haven’t learned Chinese but you have learned Chinese. (Also everything seems easier in comparison, so there are some psychological benefits)

This advice reset my approach. I now feel it is happening organically as I learn characters and recognize the characters in words. I get a broad meaning of what’s being said or written.

I've been considering Chinese since finding out it was an SVO language. I've studied Japanese so I expect some character confusion (like I know dog is different.) But I taught myself kana before I took a formal class and I will always recommend someone learn the writing as they go along because sometimes, you can guess what an unknown character can mean based on its particles. That's also why when they finally came out with a medical book for English speakers learning Japanese, I was extremely disappointed they kept all of the vocabulary, dialogue, the whole shebang in roman characters. I can understand the first few lessons but you aren’t doing your audience any favors by making it "optional" to learn the kanji. It turned the whole book into basically an index where you still have to look up everything you want to know because they didn’t bother to transition their lessons from romaji to kana to kanji. And I have seen other people calling them out on it too. I hope they get the message and remake the book sooner rather than later.
