Fasting and Muscle: How Long Term 1-2 Day Fasts BURN FAT but KEEP MUSCLE?

Fasting for prolonged periods can be a scary fast FAT LOSS tool, but what about if you’re concerned about MUSCLE LOSS? In this video the science will tell us if intermittent long term fasting can work for you also!
PLEASE CHECK OUT pixelfy.me/getnisewave , OUR COOKING STARTUP!
In recent years the popularity of intermittent fasting for fat loss has led people to push the limits to longer term, extended fasts. This raises concerns about maintaining muscle mass, we all know that dietary protein is important to build muscle, but what about maintaining it? Over a 1 day or 2 day fast, what will happen to your muscles which were so painstaking to build.
Well thanks to the some incredible biological and hormonal processes involving Growth Hormone and IGF-1, the impact may not be as bad as you might think. In this video we dive in, to see exactly what is going on here. Uncovering some of the science behind what is happening, why its happening, and how we can use it to our best advantage, to build the best body!
First let’s be clear, all weight loss diets can be boiled down to one simple concept. You are reducing your calorie intake, thereby eating less calories than you burn, this forces your body to tap into fat to make up the difference. Converting this fat into energy reduces your fat mass while making up the additional energy you need.
In order to evaluate fasting as a way to lose fat for people interested in still preserving muscle, we need something to compare it against.
Since the goal here is fat loss with a consideration for maintaining muscle, it only makes sense to compare fasting against another similarly effective method of weight loss...
A typical cutting diet; which has participants eating less calories than they consume daily , meaning they schedule their macros so their deficit shows up at the end of each day.
The story of growth hormone release starts with the interactions of two other hormones. This is detailed in a fantastic study from 1992 published in the journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism.
The first of these hormones is responsible for triggering the release of growth hormone, and is aptly named growth hormone releasing hormone.
the other is called Somatostatin or also sometimes called growth hormone-inhibiting hormone
Throughout the day and night, there are periodic releases of GHRH which should trigger the pituitary gland to release little blips of Growth Hormone. However sometimes this doesn’t work, while sometimes a secretion of GHRH triggers a burst of GH release, if GHIH is being secreted at the same time it cancels out the effects of the GHRH and GH isn’t released.
The result is small blips of growth hormone being released throughout the day into the bloodstream. What makes it even more difficult to study is is once released, growth hormone doesn’t stick around very long, the half life is quite short, in this study the average half life of GH in the blood was just 18 minutes.
During fasting mean levels of GH in the blood increased by 3 fold.
After a closer look they found the pituitary gland had kicked into overdrive, not only did the number of blips of GH release double, the average size of each blip increased as well.
as far as why it’s happening, science isn’t entirely sure, but the mechanism is hypothesized to be a result of an increase in that growth hormone release stimulating hormone, and a simultaneous decrease in the Somostatin which suppresses release as we talked about.
As far as benefits go,
It actually turns out, evidence for growth hormone itself impacting muscle growth and maintenance is mixed. The 1988 study I referenced suggested that GH may indirectly protect muscles by helping the body mobilize fat for fuel, and also support the liver in generating small amounts of necessary glucose.
While some studies have found GH increased muscle protein synthesis, others found no real effect on it…
So what is happening?
Well remember how I mentioned that GH doesn’t stick around very long once it enters the bloodstream, one reason for this is because when it reaches the liver it is transformed into ANOTHER hormone, known as IGF-1.
Unlike Growth Hormone, IGF-1 has a robust backing of scientific evidence supporting its important role in building and maintain muscle, to the point where injectable IGF-1 is a controlled substance under anti doping laws.
There are several well studied pathways which allow for muscle growth and maintenance, IGF-1 is deeply rooted in them.

I water fasted for about 5 days and lost about 17 lbs. I was majorly overweight so that is to be expected. The cray thing was after I broke my fast I ate like a horse, about 3,000 calories, and did a major full body lifting workout that was done at low volume and high intensity. I started fasting agian that afternoon and when I woke up the next morning I had only gained 2lbs, which after I quick cardio workout I shedded the 2lbs. I decided to stick to 72 hour fasts and during my re-feeds weight lift at high intensity, but low volume and during fasting days stick with low intensity cardio. After a month I lost about 33 lbs and gained about 6lbs of muscle, which was so shocking it only made me more into the fasting. One day I'll become to lean, but when that day comes it only means I must eat more food, which isn't a terrible thing.

This is counter-intuitive. Weigh training during a long fast will actually CAUSE your muscles to break down. With intermittent fasting and short fasting, there should be no problem as long as you're used to it. A long term fast is not a good time to BEGIN a new exercise regimen. 1-2 days is a short term fast. Not long term.

My anecdotal experience with 3 day fasting and trying to hit the gym was that my energy levels were tanked and I couldn't perform well. When I do 72 hour fasts I don't do anything more intense than walking. Then I use clean fuel like brown rice or sweet potatoes and hit the gym. This works best for me.

From what i (a random person on the internet without expertise) can recall, from the 3rd-4th day onwards your body really adapts to the calorie deficit, and you end up using less energy (calories). But it might had only been for calories deficit and not fasting, tho, i'd imagine our bodies are smart enough to spend less energy once a deficit is detected (either by fasting or plain calorie deficit), but then comes the problem of needing energy to have a shot at gathering food or hunting...

@randy fulford

@@Xcution5062 I interpret "prolonged fasting" the same as "longer-term fasting" or "more aggressive fasting" and I use those terms interchangeably. I would consider any fast, whether it's water-only or dry (don't eat or drink anything at all), of more than 48 hours a "prolonged fast". Reason being, this is sometimes called the "crisis"... or the point where the body is fully "switched" from utilizing blood glucose and glycogen reserves to using ketones for fuel and producing glucose internally from bodily resources to fuel the brain's intense need for a constant glucose supply! :) This is a generic estimate based on totally sedentary activity levels. I've personally gotten to this stage sooner than 48 hours of water-only fasting because of higher activity levels (weight lifting and cardio). But not many folks in the world can go longer than 48 hours without a single calorie consumed and not be fully into ketosis - we just don't store enough carbohydrate-based fuel in our bodies to extend energy supply from that resource beyond 2 full days of 0 calorie intake. As far as a fast of water only for more than 48 hours... you simply have to manage your electrolyte balance. You will experience a natural diuretic effect due to lowered insulin levels when you stop consuming calories. Your pancreas will get a (much deserved) "break" from serving up insulin in response to incoming calories. This triggers your kidneys to expel more liquid and is the primary cause of "water weight loss", as it's generically referred to... an accurate, albeit overly simplistic, explanation of the physiology behind the 8 pounds you will typically lose after 48 hours with no caloric intake... (glycogen loss in muscles being a part of that loss as well). Electrolyte balance becomes important due to something called "osmolarity" - the balance of water and sodium/potassium inside every cell in your body versus what's outside the cells and in your blood stream. Potassium and Sodium control the "electron gradient" into and out of every cell in your body. Without proper electrolyte balance, you become weak, foggy headed, and general malaise will set in. For me, this happens if I drink about 1 gallon of water (or other 0 calorie beverages) per day for about 40 hours straight without supplementing any salt (sodium) or potassium. Fasting beyond 36 hours typically means you want to start eating a pinch of salt every few hours, more frequently the more water you consume (or other 0 calorie liquids), less frequently the less water you consume. Finding a balance of water to electrolytes is tricky. Potassium regulates heart beat rhythm and you will sometimes notice what *FEELS* like an irregular or "heavy/intense" heart beat. If you wear a good heart rate monitor, you will see the average BPM (beats per minute) remains the same, so this helps a *LOT* to control the anxiety of thinking "something's wrong" and wanting to break the fast. I've droned on far too long already... but the gist of this post is to make sure you supplement sodium (I prefer pink Himalayan salt) and potassium (I typically use "No Salt", a potassium chloride salt substitute for those on a low-sodium diet) to make sure your mitochondria in your cells have proper access to electrical impulses in and out of the cell, and your body and cells maintain correct levels of intra-cellular and extra-cellular sodium, potassium, and water. As an example of how tricky electrolyte balance can be... reference a 3-day (72-hour) dry fast I performed the weekend after Thanksgiving 2019. I didn't have to supplement *ANYTHING* because the body is amazingly capable of finding homeostasis far better than we can manage when trying to find it ourselves while combining water and electrolytes (or when eating food normally for that matter, if I'm being completely honest). Dry fasting is both the most difficult (from at standpoint of having will power not to drink any liquids for 3 days) and simplest (with regard to not having to worry at all about homeostasis and electrolyte balance specifically) form of fasting I've ever done. Hope this helps - sorry for the insanely long, novel-like post :P

They even compared the effects with hyperinsulinemia and BHB was a more potent anticatabolic stimulus [5] Or, you could just look at muscular dudes here on RU-vid doing a 7 to 14 day water fasts. @Fjerid 3 года назад
@@coolyeh6305 Oh right, so just because one person (you) lost muscle on a water fast(which you don't even mention how many days) we should all just believe it's catabolic. Good logic dude. The fact is many people including myself have done long term water fasts and noticed little to no muscle loss. And by the way, these studies are about just the KETONE aspect of fasting. Prolonged fasting also stimulates growth hormone production(or should i say boosts by 400-500%) and may increase testosterone levels which all contribute to muscle maintenance. So fasting in itself is catabolic. I wasn't specifically talking about the keto diet which isn't optimal for muscle building. You need carbs for your muscles to look swole as fuck boiiii. Keto diet is just a good therapeutic treatment for many ailments but like all treatments, they should be done periodically and short-term. That's my take on it.

I done plenty of research on this as well from doctors and studies. Autophagy reaches a high percentage after 18hrs of fasting. After that it slows done and it even slows more after 24hrs and percentage of autophagy increases by little. Growth hormone is activated by HIIT exercises greatly. So if you combine fasting with HIIT aerobic exercises, Keto and cut all sugars for a least a week you'll clean up your body. A doctor recommended do to do this 7 days every month.

BRILLIANT. I'm in my 7th week of 36-hour fasting. Everything Dorian says fits with the research I've been reading (and he explains it so well! Well done.). If you haven't fasted (and you're in pretty good shape/eating decently) you should find that hunger is not an issue at ANY point. That desire for food is just in your head, an addiction to your reward cycle. Again, it is just in your head. I am NEVER hungry when fasting and feel almost disappointed when the fast comes to an end. Additionally, I began to continue my daily workout into my weekly fasting in the third week, first cautiously, then realized my workout was BETTER, when cycling 27 kilometers (in the desert) or 90 minutes of resistance training. Once I'm done working out, I can do it all over again. ...You will feel stronger, smarter, more clear-headed. Dorian's videos will help you understand why.
