Wonderful video. Now, it leaves me wondering. Such a nice trip, wonderful places, and still pressure to be on time to take a ferry. It seems it's impossible to avoid modern life.
Hello Great video my friend we hope all is well we are sorry we have not been over to you for a while but we have been very busy and then we got stuck in Malta . we are now trying to play catch up with our youtube family We hope you have a great weekend Love and Light Sarah and Glenn
Thanks for everything Jeff. Your videos really are sources of inspiration and motivation. You make us realize how possible it is to fully live our dreams.
Perfect Sunday morning, some coffee, nice weather outside and Jeff Pelletier new video to watch. Just perfect. Thanks for this journeys/adventures that you share with us. keep it up!!
Great film, so inspiring and beautiful. I’ve got my bivy sack coming in the mail - hope to do some fast pack adventures of my own in the spring and beyond.
Thank you Jeff and Adam. All the way over here in sunny Sydney, my wife and I have just been totally immersed in this fabulous hike of yours. We are planning many such hikes with our kids here in Australia and take great inspiration from you. As have mentioned before, I've had the great privilege of working in Calgary for many years and are grateful to be able to travel back to beautiful Canada in my own loungeroom thanks to your efforts putting these awesome videos together. Big thanks and cheers! Dave and family
Loved this! Was looking for something on the Sunshine Trail and found this amazing video, I'm shocked to see it doesn't even have 4000 views! Keep up the excellent work!
Fantastic video Jeff! Thanks for putting this together and sharing. Hearing about Adam's and your experience last year at the Fastpacking presentation, and then seeing this is incredibly inspiring! Hoping to get out there one day with more training and gear collection.
@@JeffPelletier Not quite enough tho, I was planning to explore more of the Sunshine Coast but then the pandemic happened... They have lots of great breweries along the coast, starting with Persephone :)
This looks awesome! I'm looking to get into fastpacking soon, and this video was exactly what I was hoping for! Do you recall how much your gear weighed/is there a target weight you try stay under when packing?
Thanks David! We’ve both got the OR Alpine Gortex bivy. Adam’s is the newer, slightly lighter model. They work great - a little heavier and bulkier than most, but the waterproofing is such a reassuring feature.
Hi Jeff, super enjoyed the video. Would you be able to post the songs you used? My music detection app can't find the track starting around 9m30. Cheers!
Hi Jeff, amazing video, thanks! I’m planning to do the same section if the SCT this summer. I have a question for you. Is there a sell phone coverage or there is no reception? Thank you 🌺
Hey Irina, I actually don’t remember - I think I only attempted to get cell service once or twice while at a high point and was able to, but I really doubt that there is cell throughout the trail. So be sure to download your maps to use with your phone’s GPS in airplane mode.
As always: a great film! Besides the great shots I also like your choice of music. Do you use a platform of royalty free music? If so, could you please tell me which one you use? Looking forward to your next film ...
Looks like a nice fastpack. Are you using a 3rd party bottle with your Katadyn water filter? The 600ml soft flask doesn't fit my Salomon packs. Keen to hear what you use.
Exactly. I use a 500ml Hydroflask bottle that happens to have the same threading. Salomon has just released their own filter though which I believe uses the same threading as the Katadyn, but on a 500ml bottle.
Hello. Awesome video. I had planned to run the west coast trail starting May 15 with a friend. That of course has been derailed by the plague. Is this trail public? Can it be done anytime without booking? I'd really like to do something big as we have been training for almost a year. Any notes or pointers would be great. Thank again.
Thanks! Yea, that’s the beauty of this trail. No permits are needed and, at least in my experience, it doesn’t get very busy! The only hut I’ve seen others at the two times I’ve been there is Tin Hat Mtn. The trail system and huts are currently closed though due to COVID-19 and may be for some time. Once it reopens, it will likely be in need of some work. I’d follow the SCT Facebook page for updates.
Thank you! No, I’ve never had runners knee, but I have had other overuse injuries. My understanding of runners knee though is that it’s more of a ‘too much too soon’ kind of injury that newer runner get. Over time, your body adapts to the mileage, provided you give it adequate time to do so.
Very nice! I wish I had a landscape like this close to where I live. Do you have list of your UL gear used for it? I sadly couldn't find anyhthing about it.
Thanks! Just time constraints. It’s logistically a little more challenging to get to the North end, so we would have needed a full day for travel in addition to another day on the trail. This way, we were able to do half days of travel.
@@JeffPelletier ahhh okay gotcha! Yeah, I'll probably want to avoid that as well. I am thinking I will try for the same route you did. Appears to be the best parts of the trail from what I can tell anyways. Cheers!
Again a great video! Thanks for sharing Jeff und thanks for letting us be a part of this adventure. Just one question. Isn't it dangerous to sleep outside a tent/hut in bear area? Greetings from Germany Steve
Thanks! I should have probably mentioned this in the film, but we stashed our food in the hut on Tin Hat Mountain, and hung our food on the second night.
@@UptothetopDe I've been planning a trip for Algonquin Park in Ontario, and there you have to worry about getting trampled by moose! It's recommended to use hammocks to avoid sleeping on the ground ;)
Hey Jayden, I always filter my water. I use the built-in Salomon XA water filter which you can learn about here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xtnUC246MTg.html
Another great video Jeff! I live in Washington, I'm going to have to give this trail a try in the spring. Didn't even know you could do hut to hut in BC! Question: Do you use Google Earth studios to make your trail animations at the beginning? How do you get it to draw in like that with the elevation map? Been trying to figure out a simple way to make an animation like that for a while and it looks like you have it nailed! Thanks in advance.
It’s the only hut system of its kind that I know of, and the best part is that it’s still not very busy! I use Google Earth Studio for the maps, yep. But I do all of the other animation and routes in After Effects. There’s unfortunately no way to do anything other than static tracks in Google Earth Studio.
I recognize the value of trekking poles for ascents, descents and water crossings, however, do they improve your speed. I believe that their weight creates an amount of fatigue as you lift them, energy loss. Please comment.
They don’t provide any speed increase, and in fact do tend to slow you down when running with them. This route had enough elevation gain that the benefit on the climb (especially with the heavy pack), outweighed the downside. But it’s something I always evaluate on a case by case basis.
So awesome! How many extra kilometers did you do after setting up the camera and running back and forth to get it?😆 Also, where do you keep your food/backpacks while you sleep?
Jeff, i did my first fastpacking trip this weekend in the UK. Travelling from Sheffield to Manchester, covering 50 miles over two days. I used the Salmon XA 25 which worked well, however my shoulders were quite painful by the end. Is this something which you get used or can you help prevent somehow?!
It was a little claustrophobic, but okay with the top open and only the bug netting to cover our faces. But the problem was that the bugs were flying around our face all night which kept us awake. So I guess I need ear plugs!
It’s the Salomon S-Lab Peak 20. Moving forward, I’ll be using the new Salomon XA 25 though which has a little more room. The S-Lab Peak 20 is intended more for racing.
Just ordered mine. All my friends use the Peak 20 and are extremely happy with it, but being now out of production is impossible to find. Hopefully the XA 25 will do the job :)
You’re not wrong. I get asked this a lot, and there are two ways I look at it. First off, we do still take in the views every chance we get. But the reality is that many miles of trail are going to get repetitive after a while, and this one in particular has a fair amount that runs along gravel roads or through cut blocks. It’s nice to be able to get through those sections faster. The second thing is that we make up for it in quantity. Hiking a trail like this would take a week or more and so it may be a once a year thing for most people. We get to enjoy trails and distances like this on a weekly basis, sometimes returning to the same areas several times in a season. So while we might spend less time on a particular trail, we get to see and experience multitudes more than the average hiker.
We stashed our food in the huts when we could and used a bear bag one night. As long as you practice safe food storage, there’s no risk to you or the bears.
@JeffPelletier Thanks, appreciate it! I'm from Europe, so maybe I'm being a tad paranoid about it, but what scares me most is running down a dense trail and bumping into a bear round some bushy corner (or worse, momma&cubs), I hear bear bells aren't really efficient, is eg. singing/loud talking (to oneself) really enough not to surprise them? Will they really back away upon hearing me? (let's just limit it to black bears) Many thanks🤜🤛
