Thank you for covering this unfortunate accident. We sometimes think that this would be common sense to not ride in a travel trailer but not all people think alike and just don’t realize the dangers and how unsafe it is to do so. I do wish that people who are new to rving would do their research and ask questions before venturing out.

This was such a tragic accident and, as you say cost the life of a doctor, wife, mother and daughter in one horrific moment. Since I don’t have all the information she may have been with others who wanted to experience the eclipse. The latter is possible but was completely avoidable. If you are going to chance your life it would have made sense for the driver to be in touch with the passengers by walkie talkie and possibly even avoiding the accident that occurred at speed. I’m sad to point out that the driver was partially responsible for this accident. He or she should never have allowed passengers in the towable under any circumstances and will have to live with the consequences forever. RVS are massive machines and must be driven by someone who is trained and experienced. Don’t just assume that because you can drive an automatic car you are okay to drive anything. You need special training and in my humble opinion should have to take a test before being allowed to either tow a camper van or drive a vehicle more than twenty feet. We are talking about human lives and those of our pets. Each person is at the mercy of the driver. Adequate training is a must and perhaps the vendors must ask for proof that they are selling their RV to someone who can drive it. Sadly this accident has caused the death of a passenger and possibly others. Please let it be the last fatality due to inexperience and thank you both for posting this video 🙏🏻😢

Yes, we heard of this tragic accident. We live on Long Island. I have camped since I was a child and we were never allowed to be in the rv while traveling including now. It is illegal in NY. Just very sad of what happened to the doctor.

Hi! Such a sad preventive sorry. Poor woman and her family. May she rest in eternal peace. What I wanted to say was I did read about her today. I was a little confused on how it was written so I’m glad you made this video for many reasons. The confusion for me was… did the door swing out and she went to grab it? Something about that article was saying some of the doors swing in??? All rv’s that I’ve had the door opens out. I know it’s very dangerous to ride in the rv while driving. I read that they were on the last leg of the trip and not on the highway. I think that’s why they thought it would be safe or safer than the highway. Neither are safe for people or pets. Thank you for making this video and again sorry to her and her family 💔

I remember the last one well. I did a long post with suggestions, then I answered questions for ~6 months after. 8-| Yes, it is illegal in NY, but more important, it's very not safe!! Most trailers have a "ball", some with an added anti-sway device and/or load leveler. They are designed to TOW, not couple the trailer and tow vehicle!! That is why they have safety chains. In the event of a crash, the trailer should uncouple and stay together with the safety chains. Otherwise the trailer would drag the tow vehicle right over with it! It is never safe to ride in a trailer not designed to do so! And RV's are not designed to do so. As Izzy and MJ said, please spread the word, talk about it. That is likely the best way to stop it! A very important video, MJ and Izzy. We read about this, it is so sad and absolutely tragic, it should never have happened. I've known for my entire life that you should never ride in a trailer, I was shocked to learn the person killed was a doctor. It surprises me that people don't know the reasons why it is illegal to have passengers in a trailer. This needs to be repeated so that it doesn't happen again.

It's difficult to know but as a kid growing up in the 70's & 80's we always rode in the bed of a pickup. Who knew, though, back then how dangerous that was and still is . Tragic 😥

The way you just said it was the polite way of saying don't be stupid. I don't understand how that could happen? The trailer has a warning, the dealership is legally obligated to tell you not to do that. Or a rental agency. A truck with tow equipment tells you not to do that. And it's just common sense.

Hard for me to believe that someone in the family did not know it was wrong. I am guessing they did and decided to do it anyway. I just found this in the Airstream FAQs "The transporting of people in the trailer puts their lives at risk and may be illegal. The trailer does not have seat belts, therefore, it is not designed to carry passengers."

My FIL was CHP and he put the whole extended family in a 5th wheel once. It’s legal in California but you can’t tow over 55 even on the freeways that’s 70 mph. I think it was an old school way of doing things, travel was slower roads smaller etc. However we don’t live in those times and we know better so we need to do better.

We read about this. One thing we’ve seen is that people travel with too many people to all fit in the tow vehicle so some ride in the trailer. Not a good idea but they say we’ve done it many times with no problems. When a problem does happen, people die.

Thank you for this valuable PSA. Newbies would easily overlook this when buying their first trailer, especially from a private party, but ALL dealers should make this clear to their buyer. I would applaud any State Trooper for lighting up any travelers they suspect having kids in the trailer. If the tow vehicle bed is filled with bicycles and only the driver in the truck that might be PC 🤷‍♀️🫶

Another thing riding in a towable is that moving around inside while the vehicle is in motion changes the dynamics of the towable and how it reacts with the tow vehicle. So sad to hear this one. Good job ERV!

I have heard about this story and it is not legal in New York to travel inside a trailer while it is moving. Even inside a truck camper is not allowed, although I think it is allowed in New Jersey, just not New York. I will share this with my group in case people don't know. I knew from years ago, but was never told not to do so by our dealer.

Traveling in a moving towable is illegal in most states. Just having a 125 lbs or more person walking around a moving trailer would create a towing balance with the weight distribution moving around.

It's an Airstream design flaw. The door opens the wrong way on the Airstreams. I had same happen to me recently the rear door wasn't closed all the way but the airflow kept the door closed. I only found out when I did my walk around check fueling.

That's why the grab handle folds over the door on travel trailers to help keep that door secured. I've never seen how securely they work, but I'm pretty sure that that's the intent.

In NY you are only allowed to ride in a fifth wheel. No other type of trailer.

A real shame for the family, unfortunately looks like the family is contending that the Airstream door has a defect, setting up for the soon to be filed lawsuit against Airstream. Be it as it may, get ready to have the most difficult and complicated to open door on all new Airstreams in the future. NY law prohibits anyone riding in a trailer or back of a pickup truck. Also if a state has a mandatory seat belt law, you are breaking the law even if you are intentionally or unintentionally riding in the trailer as there are no seatbelts. Thanks for sharing these types of situations.

We always lock our door. It’s also good to always check because we forgot to check the storage doors. And we left one down. Luckily we didn’t loose anything, but unfortunately we did damage the door.

Airstream makes several travel trailers with the suicide doors! What were they thinking? They’ll be a lawsuit against Airstream concerning this unfortunate accident. Even though she shouldn’t have been riding in the travel trailer, they will claim negligence on the part of Airstream. If the travel trailer had a regular opening door, it would never have been able to open with the pressure of the vehicle’s movement. Very sad.

I saw the accident report on cable news (Fox). Hated to hear it. Thanks for bringing it to the forefront. I don't know enough about Airstream to know if the door opens into the wind or not. I've had doors open in single engine airplanes and it's a non-event if the pilot treats it as such. Maybe the same is true with the airstream. Let it trail with the wind until stopped. This whole incident seems a bit unusual and certainly unfortunate.

I was really surprised that they were traveling this way , all the information you mentioned is so important, ive heard of people/animals dying from carbon monoxide poisoning as well . In TX it’s not legal to travel this way , as you mentioned the family that died a few months ago from a tire blown on a class C . I saw photos of that accident, it was horrific and so sad , anything can happen on the road of course , but as travel season gets underway, please be safe everyone and if you think something is unsafe or you question it , do your homework always . Common sense is no longer all that common. You would think that someone who is a doctor would just instinctively know that it's just to dangerous to dangerous to ride in a trailer being towed. It seems odd that none of them had any common sense, including the driver. You would think that one of them would have pulled out there phone and checked, the term (I don't know) is a thing of the past, you have all the answers in your hand.

So sad. Knowledge can save a life. Thanks for sharing. We have the hand rail that folds and locks in either direction. We fold it over the door to help keep the dead bolted door closed just in case. Traveling in the RV, not so good. If our cats sense that we might be hitting the road, they will hide in places no human has ever been, nor could go without dismantling our 5th wheel. ;) So a time or two they have ridden in the 5th wheel instead of the pick up.

😢 Very sad. Here in California it is illegal to have passengers in a travel trailer while in motion. It’s legal for a 5th wheel as long as the passenger(s) has contact with the tow vehicle driver. We still don’t allow it though. And our pups ride in the back bench seat of our truck.

Had a friend travel with dogs in their camper and they got stuck in traffic. One of the dogs died from heat stroke. Its a 100% never.

No one is allowed to travel in a travel trailer in any State. You can travel in a 5th wheel ONLY IF there in 2 way communication between the 5th wheel and the Tow vehicle. Thank you for letting us know.

Unfortunately that’s not true. I looked it up after I heard about this accident. They have 3 categories… 5th wheel, travel trailer and truck camper. There are 10 states where you are allowed to ride in a travel trailer. 23 states allow to ride in a 5th wheel and 44 allow riding in the back of a truck camper.

Sucks that you post this type of video. But I am glad that you do. Nobody is too smart to learn not to do something unsafe or learn how to be safer resulting in protecting strangers as well as their families and themselves. Hoping for less of these but they are a must and you both do a very good job with respect to the situation in presenting these safety fact/ lessons
