Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 1X00 PROLOGUE reaction 

Rin can't just assume cu was a servant 'cause there are many more supernatural beings in the nasuverse like dead apostles and vampires, even mages can sometimes look crazy

Lancer is confused because usually servant are summoned with their noble phantasm as a weapon and so their weapon tends to be critically important and valuable an asset and here is Archer sporting blades instead of presumably his main weapon and moreover those blades which must be part of his noble phantasm equipment are broken down and thrown aside to be instantly replaced by back ups just like some disposable weapon. This and archers attitude goes against what heroic spirits (especially of the knight class) tend to consider honourable and are proud of.

The Stay Night adaptation is an adaptation of the "Fate" Route of the OG Visual Novel. Fate/Stay Night had 3 routes. Fate(Shirou/Saber Route), Unlimited Blade Works(Shirou/Rin Route), and Heaven's Feel(Shirou/Sakura Route). Heaven's Feel was adapted into 3 movies by Ufotable, who of course also made this Unlimited Blade Works adaptation. The problem with the Fate/Stay Night anime which was Studio Deen's "Fate" Route adaptation (If I Remember Correctly) is that it tried to fit in several elements from the other 2 routes that weren't supposed to be there. Basically, they tried to do something similar to what the Steins Gate 0 anime did where they tried to mesh multiple routes into a single timeline. Except, well, unlike Steins Gate 0's anime, they fucked it up. It's not as bad an adaptation as most of the community says, but Studio Deen's adaptations of the franchise are definitely the weakest adaptations in the franchise. Case and point, Studio Deen also made a UBW adaptation, but it was a single movie. This anime is 24 episodes, and some people still give it some flak for cutting some relatively minute things. So you can image just how poorly a further compression of what should have been at least 24 episodes of content into a SINGLE MOVIE was received.

Even if someone told you Archers name I would be surprised if you heard of him he is EXTREMELY obscure and is only vaguely mentioned in poems and we don’t even know if he existed or not if you type his name into google Archer appears instead of the real guy from legend

There are actually Qualifications for how Heroic Spirits are assigned to the different Servant Classes: Saber = Be a renowned Swordsman/woman, or have a legendary sword associated with your legend. Lancer = More or less the same as Saber. Archer = Known or believed to possess powerful ranged weaponry or special abilities related to ranged weaponry. Rider = Known or believed to possess a renowned mount like the Pegasus, or in some cases a highly renowned leader. Iskandar had both, being in possession of a mount gifted to him by Zeus, and also a renowned king. Caster = Renowned Mage, Scholar, Inventor, and/or Artisan. Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, and Mozart are a few of the more modern era Caster Class Servants that exist. Assassin = Incredibly skilled or renowned Assassin. This does, in fact, include FAILED Assassins so long as their attempt is famous enough. Originally, this Class was ONLY supposed to be made up of members of the legendary Hashashshin, a famous Order of Assassins who's name is where the word "assassin" originates from. Berserker = Heroic Spirits who, at some point in their story/legend, went/were driven mad. Note: There will always be exceptions. For example, not every Berserker is so blinded by their Madness to be incapable of speech, and in some cases they are perfectly a perfectly sane and/or functional member of society, but are so incredibly obsessive or deluded over one particular thing or set of things that it borders the realm of Madness.

Congrats on starting ubw! I am starting your fate reactions here but I will go back and watch the zero ones soon 😊 Because you seemed not sure of how this works, the original visual novel of fate stay night had 3 routes(or alternate timelines which started at the same spot and branched off into their own stories) The name of the 3 routes were fate, unlimited blade works and heavens feel, why were written to be read in that specific order as they build off of the concepts stories and ideas introduced in each route. The original 2006 anime was mostly based on fate but it didn't really adapt the material or the characters well although it's the only fate route adaption that we have(atleast as of January 23 2024!). I got into fate through the 2006 adaption when it first came out(I am old, I was in high school at the time 💀) so I have a lot of fond nostalgic memories for it. Unlimited blade works got a single movie adaption in 2010 and an ufotable series in 2014 which you are watching now which is a pretty decent adaption with amazing production values. I won't say it gets the full effect of the visual novel route down but it's by far the best of the visual novel routes as an adaption so far. And then there are the heavens feel movies that is a trilogy that came out from 2017 to 2020. I will be following along with a lot of interest!

Excited to see your reaction to this! Yes, UBW and the 2006 Fate/stay night anime are adaptions of different routes of the Visual Novel. The 2006 anime adapts the first route (simply called "Fate" route) and UBW adapts the second route (called, well... Unlimited Blade Works). The 2006 anime has a lot of problems (not just the dated animation), and people generally dislike it and recommend to skip it. Understandable, especially since ufotable in this UBW adaption made some effort to explain or at least hint at some the most crucial things from the Fate route that UBW VN readers would already know (you must play the routes in order in the VN). I am still hoping for a ufotable remake of the Fate route, though it's unlikely to happen. The Fate route is still my favorite of the three, because it's Saber's route (meaning she gets a lot of character development that won't happen in the other routes), and she is my favorite Fate/stay night character! Oh and don't worry; while the very start of the story is identical in all routes (well, there are some minor choices you can make in the VN), all three routes have totally different things happen.

Dont worry about having seen Stay Night and knowing how that goes. This route is wildly different than Stay Night or Heavens Feel. All 3 diverge from each other hard. This meeting here between Saber and Archer is the "Divergence Point" in the novel so from here on every route is different. Its good to see yall get back on the Fate Train. I know you had to delay because health and all that but its great you can keep watching the series you loved now that your healthyer. After UBW you should watch the Waver series because i know you also loved Iskader and Waver and their story is personally one of my favs. The Waver series takes place in the 10 years between the 2 wars. The broken relic in the box was Gilgamesh's relic. The snake skin relic from zero. The dad left it and his gem collection for her for the next war. He just never accounted in being betrayed by Gil in Zero. So she did a summon with no specific relic so the servant you get isnt one you can really control who it is.

Did you realize after watching UBW you kinda get why people suggest to watch FSN UBW/2006 first before FZero?

I know is WAY too early for that but I'm curious to see how they will react to Heavens Feel... it is the most fitting in tone to the Fate Zero anime adaptation after all.

Oh, the wait is so worth it. Archer's identity was never revealed in Fate anime from Studio Deen which I assume Ember already watched. And any twists in that anime/Fate route will be revealed early or considered as minor plot devices in UBW. So if she never read VN or other materials, it's safe to say she's also in a clean slate. Well, almost. Like this Berserker's identity - despite it was revealed early in Fate and not a major twist, I'd be a spoiler ruins the surprise for Chris.

No spoilers below. I love how at the start of the prologue you kinda feel sad for Rin who lost her dad but then anyone who watched Zero or knows even more, realizes that he was a pos that saw only the magic potential in his kids and didnt view them as a father should. So you just smile at this like a certain priest but for different reasons. Then the show misses no time and shows Rin being bit of a girlfailure. All this little suspense over the city being quite and seeing no students, in a series about a secret magical war....for the reveal that she just woke up too early. girlfailure points+1 Shinji....well lets not waste any more time on him, only remarkable thing about him is the voice actor. You dont need any mana for the summoning. Kiritsugu himself says that the grail takes care of the summoning. The Master's only job is to use a catalyst and chant...sometimes not even that.All those summoning preparations only for Rin to ignore literally every proper step of it except the chant. Her mana doesnt affect the ritual, the time doesnt matter, standing in the middle of the summoning circle and not using a catalyst is the worst mistake in the whole process. The scene is so epic on its own but then you realize she just fumbled most parts of this important ritual. Congratulations Rin, you destroyed your roof, the/one of the living rooms, your Servant has memory issues and he isnt Saber. girlfailure points+1 Also the whole clock thing from her dad is irrelevant to the Servants. Just a test for her to see if she is ready but he isnt around to check the test itself. Is never addressed again so dont worry about it. Archer telling her to stay in the basement until he basically wins for her is so funny when you remember that that was basically her father's strategy in Zero. Jokes are the deepest lore in Fate, so one has to wonder if Tokiomi was written like that because of this one line. Uses a seal for a stupid reason. Actually if you rewatch Zero, in ep2 Waver, who is also a kid, is about to use the same command on Rider as callback to this scene, but he stops at the the end. girlfailure points+1 And I wouldnt judge the kids yet. Lets not go through all the stupid, ahem, bad descions the adults in Zero did. It makes the kids look really mature....except a certain seaweed. "I am sorry but I have no sword". Also Archer: dual wielding dozens of swords. Can you trsut anything this man says? 10:04 XD I dont find Rin's reason to fight lacking. It is certainly....aimless to a degree. Like she views it like a test as a magus instead of a match to win some prize. Kayneth and Waver both fought in the previous war for the same reason basically. According to old man Zouken in Zero, he was planning to have her produce a heir for the next war "in 60 years", and his training was basically being thrown into a worm pit. So lets wait and see how this develops. I am pretty sure the person closing the door when Rin was helping Sakura was Archer in spirit form. YES!!!FINALLY!!. Someone that doesnt think my boi Cu is Diarmuid from Zero. I dont even get how people look at them and think they are the same person. To describe how bad the 2006 series adapted all of this....basically everything except Rin summoning Archer up to seeing him sitting in the living room, jumping from the roof, the fight with Lancer, saving Emiya, and being attacked by Saber(yes as I described it, it doesnt show why she went to his house) was skipped. So all this set up here and the banter between them doesnt exist in the 2006 anime. Interesting analysis of Rin's motivation tbh. The author of Zero, Gen Urobuchi said something relating to that. Not a spoiler but it may imply how she develops here so I will post only if you want. Archer being like a father figure to Rin is a scary and hilarious idea. Rin isnt bad at socializing. She tries to avoid it because it could create problems when things get magical. And she only "tries" to be like her father. Her father wouldnt save some guy who witnessed magic. As she said, she wanted to avoid people because she doesnt want to harm anyone for seeing magic stuff. Tokiomi wouldnt care. Yeah, Rin underestimating everyone should be a like a Servant skill tbh. Like she was born with that. Cant wait for the Sakura stuff to be revealed.... Lets pretend that guy wasnt Gilgamesh. Yeah all those adults knew their craft...and managed to fuck up in every other way possible. Really excited for the rest of the series here.

Ah yes, the best girl's route is finally here. I was bewitched by Tohsaka Rin ever since the 2006 adaptation of FSN. Also, knowing who Archer really IS makes the entire episode different for me. I suspect one of you know what I'm talking about. XD

Faithful doesn't mean equals good. The most glaring fault of the ufotable adaptation are the Shirou vs Archer and Shirou vs gilgamesh fights. Everyone who watched the Deen UBW movie knows how boring the Ufotable version of those fights are. Prepare yourselves from constant monologuing here.
