Hey Joe. I wouldn't be recording music if I hadn't found your videos years ago. Every song I record or mix has part of you in it. Just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Great trick, when you need it. Also works with pink/white noise on Snare drum with or without gated verb.

Great video. I've heard of this technique before but never tried it. Another way to get some low end on an instrument is to use a pitch shifter and go an octave down and bleed some of that low end in. I recently had a snare from a kit recorded at a live show that was really thin. The octave was too low, but I found that bleeding in about 209% of a pitch shifted version one fourth down instead was just what it needed.

Damn, this is so much more effective than adding samples and in my taste it sounds even better than recording with a subkick too.

Like your video on adding a bit of distortion to a bass (HSC November 25, 2020) to make it stand out, this is a great thing for me to know about. It really helps to learn about these things. It makes my mixes better. I agree with what everybody else is saying about you and your videos. You're so helpful and all of your videos are much appreciated.

this is the kind of things that ableton makes so much easier, the drum buss in Live is great, but it´s good to actually knowing how to manipulate audio

But the kick is in a specific key right? how do you know if the tone generator is creating a sine wave in the key/scale of the kick? You would in fact have to know what exact frequency the note of the kick is. For example C1 is 32.70. F1 is 43.65 A1 is 55.00. Next you could automate the frequency-band on the plugin to make it "follow" the chords of the song - or the notes of the bass. 1 2 3 perfect and dynamic low-end.

I personally don't move the kick that much, it stays in the root note most of the time but sometimes I move it a 5th (up or above) depending of the part of the song

I have learned a LOT in the past year thanks to you and these amazing videos you put together. I still have soooo much to learn, but now I can say I can do something and it doesn't totally stink! I can tell that I don't like the sound of something and have a good idea of what's causing that problem. I also know that if I can make a mix sound good in my car, I'm on to something! I have 3 tests, cell speaker, ear buds, and car (with a crazy weird sound system). Thank you, Joe!

I'm legit gonna try this on my newest song now! Been messing around with a couple ways to do this and this is exactly what ive been needing! Thanks so much for all your tricks and tips. I absolutely love your approach to teaching and I'll be a forever subscriber to whatever you put out 😁 one thing I'd like to see though... Could you do a video on a punk rock song? I'd be more than happy to donate a song of mine for you to use if you'd like.

I’m not a fan of RU-vidrs advertising “tricks” when they are usually “techniques” but this is a pretty cool trick. ;) BTW Joe, you are an amazing communicator. Congrats for all your success.

Nice trick, but it has a major flaw. (Calm down, it has a solution.) The low frequency of the sine wave is not triggered every kick drum hit. Because of that, I find that it can cancel out with the original kick drum frequency as sometimes they not align very well with each other. The "right" way to do it is with a frequency synthesizer. The effect is put in a duplicated or buss kick drum channel, the fundamental kick frequency is set within the effect and the plugin react with the original signal, creating a synthsized low end that aligns perfectly (once you put the right fundamental frequency) with the original kick drum. After that, a gate and low-pass EQ for tightness and you are done. I do it in Ableton with "Corpus" effect, but I'm shure there must be a third-party plugin that does the same. I hope you can try it out. Cheers.

@lucasschaffer948 2 года назад
Or you can high pass the original kick drum sound and not be to picky about what I said above. This way, the exact low frequency will not matter too much and it can still sound great. Anyway, I find that doing it with a frequency synthesizer is better because it can give a "start point" to the low frequency created (as it is a reaction to the original kick drum signal). With the sine wave generator, sometimes the frequency can start inverted or in all the points in between as it is not triggered every hit.

Did the same until I got my hands on the Harrison Drumflow Plugin, which has an inbuilt Wave-Generator. The ToneGen/Gate Combo was too much hassle for my taste, as soon the level changed, you had to readjust etc...

Er, what am I doing wrong here. I followed the instructions but I’m getting the tone when noting is playing and it cuts when the kick drum hits. Somehow, I have it backwards 🤔

Does it make any sense to pick a frequency that's in the key of the song? Like, if the song is in the key of A, set your tone generator at 55 Hz.

I would love to save a track that I would normally use for a subkick. And since a subkick will only produce one note (depending on the speaker) this seems like an excellent alternative as you can literally pick the note !...has anybody compared this technique vs a subkick?
