Faulty Newvicon Tube Camera Panasonic WVP-A1

I think this fault is caused by the camera's automatic gain control circuit malfunctioning. The AGC is calibrated from an optical black strip on the edge of the tube target, if the scanning is off centre or incorrectly sized then this strip is not scanned at the correct time and the AGC doesn't work properly causing these types of problems. It can be seen that the problem occurs when the camera moves towards a strong light source, it is this light being picked up during what should be the optical black area that causes the effect.

Interesting, years ago I had a JVC (rebadged as Ferguson Videostar) camera with a very similar fault.

I have had this problem with a ferguson 3V20 (JVC GX88). That camera has a vertical stripe filter with the optical black strip at the top so the fault was with the vertical deflection. This one has a diagonal stripe pattern with optical black at the side so it will probably be the horizontal deflection.

Hi, I have a Panasonic PK-700 from April 1981, which I believe is a 1 inch vidicon and not a Newvicon. It works but the picture has a lot of lag and doesn't look very good which I expected. I'm guessing the capacitors on the deflection board and other circuitry probably need some recapping in order to get a better picture. Pretty sure there's a problem with the viewfinder CRT deflection, because the picture isn't filling up the screen. I noticed that there's some grey specs on the picture, which I assume are dust on the target. Can you remove the lens from one of these cameras easily and order to clean the target of the vidicon? I know it's not a C-mount lens but will taking off the internal lens mess up the alignment?

It will be possible to get it apart but I don't think you will be able to just unscrew it. Looking at pictures it appears to have motorised zoom, this might make getting it apart more difficult because you have to decouple the lens from the zoom motor. How much more difficult depends on how its done. Gear drive might be more difficult than belt drive. It might be possible to blow the target out with some compressed air though without having to completely dismantle it. Are the specs visible when viewing it on a TV as well as the viewfinder and do they appear the same regardless of zoom and focus setting?

@@nowt1002 Yeah it has powered zoom. And I've tried adjusting focus and zoom with the lens.

If it the specks stay the same when you adjust the zoom and focus then they are probably on the faceplate or target. If they change (become blurry or sharper) then they are more likely to be on or in the lens.

A while back my Panasonic Omnimovie shifted the video upwards, revealing a green strip with upside down numbers. It looked like a ruler. I left that camera on that night so see if it would fix itself, and it did but I still don’t know what happened.

It's capacitors failing. If you leave it off a long time it will come back. My NVM1 has started doing the same. I will make a video on it when I get chance to look into it.

@@nowt1002 Thanks. No surprise to me that those caps went bad. Happens to all of this stuff.

Hi! I have this camera, but I don’t have any clue about how to use it, could you explain?

Do you have a the cable for it and a compatible vcr? The camera plugs into a portable vcr which records the video from the camera. The vcr also provides the power for the camera.

Ah OK is it one of those that's like a battery with a mains cable coming out? Is the vcr a Panasonic one?
