The genius of German expressionism at its remarkable best. This masterpiece, alongside Lang's 'Metropolis' were 50 years ahead of their time. Hitchcock's early apprenticeship in German film techniques triggered his own homage to German use of light and shadow: aka, 'Rebecca', 'The Lady Vanishes', then onto classics like 'The Birds' and 'Vertigo' Every single shot of this film is a labour of love. It puts of much of what we call entertainment to shame.

The film score is really something from beyond. It has a ghostly vibe that seems to sink its teeth into your psyche, lining up perfectly with the atmosphere of what's currently happening but also foreshadowing the future of the characters actions simultaneously. It's really an ingenious piece and from the looks of the comments, seems like it's being over-looked.

Beautiful movie, i was in tears. There was too much suffering in life, Faust was just like any other humans, a victim of humanity's lust of youth, physical pleasures but love transcended this inherent selfishness when he fell in love with Gretchen and was willing to give up his life to be with her in the end.

Beautiful movie wtf are you talking about, this is a lesson for those who lust after pleasures and richness who would do everything even selling their own soul to achieve those goals submit to god no one can’t stand against him he’s the only one the almighty who can’t cancel any blood pact that’s what Faust in the end couldn’t seem to comprehend it was Faust fault and only his fault ,the girl went to heaven because she didn’t believe in satan she truly love Faust and plus she believed in god but didn’t know Faust sold his soul for power and knowledge, sorry if you even after seeing the movie couldn’t even realize what the movie was about dumb

+Mr Morgan Only because of that one image of Orlok walking up the stairs. Other than that, the movie really doesn't do anything that Faust doesn't do better. Besides, it was considered the 101 of Shadows by scholars. The idiots who glorify William Shakespeare even though it's still up for debate as to whether or not he even wrote half the plays he's credited for.
@SuperCHARged425
@SuperCHARged425 8 лет назад
Mr Morgan Let's just agree that we disagree. I don't dispute that Nosferatu is a great movie, but by comparison I think Faust is the superior one. If you think Nosferatu is better, than who am I to say you're wrong? by the way, the stairs I was referring to was his shadow on the wall at the end of the movie when she offers herself to him. and I VERY seldom agree with scholars/critics.

This movie is a masterpiece. I don't understand why all Murnau movies have been remastered except for this one. Why is Nosferatu praised so much but Faust gets overlooked? Nasferatu was boring and didn't have anyhting impressive. Faust is so rich and this soundtrack is perfection. Most of silent films music is just background looped tracks that are utterly boring. This film is so good it has inspired dozens and dozens of other films.

Are we to believe Mephisto can restore youth but can't either turn back time and/or keep someone from dying of a mortal wound? I haven't read the book, so I am curious, IS there actually anything their "agreement" that would prohibit this very logical wish from being granted?

Actually Faust's return to the town after his expulsion which probably took several decades or even a century or two, only for him to see it, exactly as he remembered it from his own youth only with a complete set of different people living in the place of the people he knew, does beg a question but what it felt like getting old in times when cities did not actually change that drastically you must realize that let's say a twelve century town would not look very different from a thirteen century one, so imagine Faust leaving his home town let's assume in 1385 and returning back in 1485 and seeing no signs of the plague and the town looking exactly as it did during his original youth, it's like the tragedy of the plague didn't happen and these people did not exist, and if he asked about it nobody would even know or remember what he's talking about, since not many people alive would even remember him, now that's some serious shit to think about.

F. W. Murnau is best known today for Nosferatu: A Symphony In Horror, but this movie clearly is far superior to Nosferatu. The visual imagery is stunning, operatic in scale, and the story turns upon philosophy and human failings. It's a masterpiece of German expressionist cinema and one of the finest movies of the silent era. This is the movie Murnau should be known for.
