Okay. First of all, if you hate Dean, you’re gonna hate my Gilmore Girls edits because while I recognize and acknowledge his character flaws, I understand the complexities required of a realistically written character. I also have a strong distaste for Rory beyond season 1, and even then there are some questionable moments.
Point being, I am not defending Dean in this video, nor am I laying sole blame for the affair on Rory. He was an idiot, he did something idiotic. He was a teenage boy who made a mistake he didn’t understand the consequences of.
But I will defend Dean’s “jealous” and “controlling” behavior. Was he perhaps a bit too overprotective? Yes. But he had good reason to be. He never started a fight with Jess, Jess always antagonized him. Dean simply countered, whether with words or force. Dean had anger issues but he was right to be paranoid about Jess, clearly, considering Rory cheated on him with Jess.
When it comes to some of the things I use against Rory in this - she was allowed to say or feel however she wanted in the episode where Dean tells her he loves her. My problem is the fact that when they broke up, she lied to everyone and let him take the fall for it. For another thing, was her statement when Dean told her he proposed to Lindsey factually accurate? Yes. But did she have the right to tell him what to do or how his life should be when she left him? No, no she did not.
Rory has a million other flaws I could name, but those are the main ones you could see in this video that aren’t self-explanatory.
Lastly, as to the affair. Dean was severely at fault. He shouldn’t have acted the way he did towards Lindsey, he shouldn’t have cheated on her with his ex, and he should have known better. However, I do think that Rory had a lot to do with it because… emotional manipulation. Rory, even after breaking it off with Dean, kept him on a short leash. Dean was still desperately in love with her and attempting to crawl his way into moving on, but Rory almost in a way, didn’t allow for that to happen. And her possessive language in her conversation with Lorelei after Lorelei sees Dean leaving, saying “He’s my Dean” is childish, immature, and petty. Rory also never faced true consequences for the affair, where Dean went through a divorce at 18/19 years old.
My other problem with this is that you can see Dean learned from his mistakes, and he grew from them. If anything, Rory threw a temper tantrum and when she didn’t get her way, she just picked up and moved on. She didn’t learn from it and that shows in how she does it again with Logan in the revival, whereas Dean is happily settled with his wife and a whole gaggle of kids. When Rory gives her spiel about Dean (all of which is true, mind you, and it’s the first thing she’s said in a long time that I’ve agreed with), if anything, he seems slightly uncomfortable. He’s moved on, and he’s happy in the end. Rory’s still hung up on the past. And that’s the difference that character growth makes.
Moral of the story, I think Rory left Dean broken and refused to put him back together unless it was for her own amusement. When Dean finally got away from her, he rebuilt from scratch. That’s the point of this edit, is explaining the point of view of a character who had his heart, mind, and soul broken one too many times by a girl, and showing the regret, the guilt, the bitterness, the pain, and everything else that comes with recalling the past.
